macromaniac··on Cloudflare R2 storage: Rapid and reliable object storage, minus the egress fees
https://wasabi.com/rcs-pricing-faq/

>If your monthly egress data transfer is greater than your active storage volume, then your storage use case is not a good fit for Wasabi’s free egress policy

>If your use case exceeds the guidelines of our free egress policy on a regular basis, we reserve the right to limit or suspend your service

Unless I am misreading, wasabi can shut you down if your egress is high.

macromaniac··on Introverts didn't 'win' lockdown
I don't think introversion comes from not wanting to learn to interact, but from not seeing a reason to. Anecdotally, I switched from introvert to extravert when I changed the focus of the conversation from knowledge transfer to just trying to have fun, I'm sure everyone has their own reason X for being introverted or extroverted.
macromaniac··on Granting a 14-year-old’s wish for a dragon
Reminds me of a faerie dragon from homm3, I am jealous of this 14 year old, especially because a long term personal dream of mine is flying to downtown fort worth on a mechanical ornithopter dragon.
macromaniac··on Bug in Notepad Involving Asterisk in Title Bar
There's a bug in notepad that lets you turn your computer into a marquee. Making the text big and turning off wordwrap causes the text rendering to lag behind your typing. Here is a demo video I threw together. It's good to have in your pocket for if you're ever bored at fry's or something, that said the update speed is a bit jarring.

macromaniac··on Ask HN: How do I learn drawing?
After watching many youtube videos, the one that actually helped me was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ufz75UvHs&t=1185s

Tldw: Do an extreme version of agile for getting better. E.g, do 1 minute sketches of a cup 12 times, trying different variations, and understand WHY some variations worked and some didn't. After experimenting, see how other people did it. And do it again.

I used to hate drawing, but after trying this approach for months I think I love it. I do not regret the time I spent learning to draw, and after putting in the hours it changed the way I see the world.

macromaniac··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
I am ashamed to have written this comment. I didn't know about clearing houses and shouldn't have been so arrogant in a field I'm not familiar with. Funnily enough I put my money where my mouth was and profited, but that was just luck. Whatever.

macromaniac··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
>Melvin doesn't have a short position anymore.

This makes no sense, if gme isn't shorted then why then break the law and restrict buying it?

And it does feel like they are restricting buys. Seems unlikely that all the trading platforms that rely on citadel coincidentally decided they wanted to hedge against volatility by restricting user buys.

macromaniac··on Alternative notation for exponents, logs and roots? (2011)
Exponentiation isn't commutative, so each position on the triangle matters. For multiplication there would be two equivalent triangle states for instance since you can swap xy=z and yx=z. Not saying its a bad idea though.
macromaniac··on After losing my savings as an indie hacker, I can't do it anymore. I quit.
Thanks for the recommendation, Ill give it a shot. It feels good to know other people have beaten it. Social anxiety has prevented me from working with others in any form (feedback, delegation, marketing).

I remember first day of speech in college when it was my turn to speak. I got up, walked out the door, and dropped the class.

It was hard to even work up the courage to post this comment. But i did. Baby steps.

macromaniac··on How Did Vim Become So Popular?
Ya, basically go up, grab number, go down, paste number, increment number, go down, repeat 50 times. Needed for generating xaml that had row and column #s from the csv, interestingly excel could gen the code too relatively quickly.
macromaniac··on How Did Vim Become So Popular?
Here's a video of some more advanced vim features I threw together. I'd be surprised if you can do this using e.g. vanilla vscode

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDGG3hK4Bg8

Its a simplified version of a problem from work a while ago where we had to generate ui from lots of csv files. The last dev on it was taking weeks, but with vim I was able to come in and finish the boilerplate instantly. (We were commited to non-dynamic ui at that point, I think I made the right play especially with how we ended up using it).

Vim is, in my opinion, inferior to an ide or a good text editor, but if you have it as a plugin you get the best of both worlds and vim suddenly can do... basically anything you can think of. Like here's putting a breakpoint on every line in a file

https://imgur.com/SFhlEr7

The best part of vim in an ide is when you're pair programming and you do something fancy, and your friend says "Wait, go back, howd you do that??"

macromaniac··on Configs suck? Try a real programming language
>This isn't generally the reason. The main reason config files exist is so you can run the program in in a different state easily

My ide lets me f12 to my config.js file and i can use editor hotkeys like comment toggle so by this metric my method is superior.

>You still have to rebuild the app for those environments.

As i said above you dont have to rebuild for python and javascript since they can load the config file on the fly. I use xml or json for compiled languages because beign able to change the program without recompiling is of critical importance.

>you shouldn't have different code for prod and test and dev.

You dont have different file for test/dev/prod, you have 1 config file that has a few inline if statments based off of runtime args. For me 1 file is less confusing than 2 or 3.

macromaniac··on Configs suck? Try a real programming language
Thats essentially what config.js does, why split up configuration in multiple places?

With scripting languages theres no reason to use json for configurtion unless the config is shared between programs. The main reason config files exist is so you can edit the program without recompiling, i feel like people forgot that and kept blindly using json when js or ts is better. My config file is just like 20 lines but putting the extremely simple conditional logic of if its debug if its client if its server there reduces program complexity by a couple hundred sloc.

macromaniac··on Configs suck? Try a real programming language
>the logic should go into the main program that reads the config and decides what to do, not left inside config.

if i follow your logic i should replace the 5 if debug statements in my config.js with 50 littered throughout my codebase. Also i lose strong typing and in line documentation.

edit:ill add im against emitting json from a config script, that seems like additional complexity. just reference a file, you can use json if and only if you need program interop and reference it from the config script

I agree, 2% is terrifying, try an online rng and see if you survive. Then try it for close friends/family. Its russian roullete with a few more chambers.
macromaniac··on Ask HN: Does anyone record themselves while programmming?
Just obs, typically i just type in the obs curr recording time in the github issue and then when i go back i can find the video that day and look for the time, but most of the time i would just stop the recording, go back and analyze what happened, and fix then and there. This has happened at a rate of 5 times a year so its not super common, but nothing worse than seeing a bug once and never seeing it again till production. I have not done the type of video analysis you are talking about so i cant speak to how helpful it would be, it would be nice to link videos to commit history but i have not done this and not aware of anyone making tooling for it. You can ballpark it if the last commit was when you ended the video but ya thats prolly not what you looking for.
macromaniac··on Ask HN: Does anyone record themselves while programmming?
Ive done it for 5ish years, the advantages are huge and absolute.

#1) no impossible to reproduce bugs

Any one off bugs you find a are instantly replayable, often times things that you think are bugs were actually just misclicks. Since issues you open in eg github are timestamped (and commits) you can go back to the video and see what happened

#2) You can now quantify what's wasting your time in numbers

By randomly sampling hundreds of hours of video I can say 60% (60%!) of my development time was spent on premature optimization. With this data I have now effectively doubled my programming productivity. An added bonus is now you know exactly how long everything took to complete in hours (837h for current project)

#3) Helps you stay on task

At the end of the day i tell myself what i need to do tommorow in a very short 5 minute video and suddenly its really easy to jump in.

In short, I highly recommend it, and theres really very little reason not to do it.

macromaniac··on Why Aren’t We Curious About the Things We Want to Be Curious About?
I think better than a book is just being curious about the world around you. Why does only my front car window have frost on it? Why does my granola bar wrapper emit light when I open it under my covers? You are guarenteed to learn relevant things that change your worldview instead of relying on whatever you are told to be curious about. Think for yourself, but you should also be curious for yourself.
macromaniac··on Await in Rust
It took me a while to get comfortable with it too. The intuition I use is that in the past it used to be DrawWindow(), DrawWindow(), DisplayResultsofSlowFunction() and then the window would freeze for a few seconds, but with async/await theres a queue basically and your DisplayResultsOfSlowFunction() gets put to the side while awaiting so DrawWindow() can keep doin what its doin and your app doesnt appear to freeze, for a gui example (idk if that helps or if ye already knew it but just in case, for me all the internet explanations never talked about the scheduler for some reason so it took me a while).

macromaniac··on Differentiable Monte Carlo Ray Tracing Through Edge Sampling
No,you cant tell how pixels will change when you nudge a camera normally without recalculating everything. If environment is differentiable you can cheat and see for instance that you needed to move your arm a little to the left last bowl to get a strike (moving your arm effects your hand which shifts the ball which knocks down more pins which increases your score)
macromaniac··on Magnetic Field Record Set with a Bang: 1,200 Tesla
If can get to 4 billion tesla I /think/ that's enough to generate electrons from the vacuum of space (see:schwinger magnetic induction) and you could do something akin to magnetohydrodynamics ( see: https://youtu.be/LS3GQk9ETRU ) which would use the magnetic field to accelerate the electrons away from the ship, I could be incorrect here though
