mackeye··on Phoenix: A modern X server written from scratch in Zig
(i worked a _little bit_ on dwl) each wlroots upgrade is a pretty small diff on the dwl source. the annoying part is, as dwl is configured with patches, every patch author has to update their patch to the new 0.x, as dwl is quite minimal, and thus has no stable api. that being said, obviously, dwm doesn't have this problem :)

also, for dwl, the issue is that the initial author (not the guy that wrote that notice) is sorta mia, and he has control of the repo on codeberg, so we'd probably need to fork to be safe, and he may not want to take on project lead. (he checks every patch for merge conflicts with one another and upgrade breakages, god bless him lol)

i was being charitable, not obtuse. a great number of my closest friends are trans; no element of their experience as i observe it fetishizes the very concept of transition, and those who've spoken to me about it are quite opposed to the "pornification" (as opposed to even sexualization) of trans people (particularly women) by the community itself, and others. if you're at all curious, i thought [0] was pretty informative.

all that to say, trans people (or anyone) shouldn't need to qualify their position (or very lighthearted, energetic opinion piece) with some genericizing disclaimer as to their identity, intents, etc., on the very basis of their identity. live and let live (i.e. fuck off)

to be honest, i've been playing violin for a number of years and my strategy is still to listen to a part of the song, rewind until i can play it (even if slowly), then write that down. some of the pieces i want to write down are twin-guitar pieces, where i need to (generally) choose the melodic guitar over the harmonic. i haven't found AI good at that, but, thinking now, i haven't tried it in years, so it may have gotten good enough? sorry for the lack of much insight, lol. (for metal, finding tabs online can at least help with the rhythm, so i just need to try and transcribe the notes & flourishes).
mackeye··on Well being in times of algorithms
i'd say it's less predatory for all users to have the same algorithm. maybe on HN, the userbase is small enough, and the articles generally focused enough, that it'd be less impactful were the algorithm somewhat divergent per user. but on other platforms, rabbitholes appear very quickly, and very inorganically. to be plain, i've liked a number of pro-palestine posts on instagram, and started getting very anti-semitic reels until i hit "not interested" a certain number of times. the algorithm is opaque, but also stupid, and motivated to aggravate me into commenting, scrolling more, etc., to view ads. i don't know if i have a way to categorize HN into "good" and ig/X/... into "bad", to be honest.

for what it's worth, discord doesn't really have a user algorithm to get people into certain servers, and yet people are readily radicalized on discord (especially to the far-right, in my experience), but obviously the way people interact on discord is different to social media.

mackeye··on Well being in times of algorithms
the hn front page is the same for all users --- on ig, im happy to see my friends' posts, but i really dont need the slurry of palantir-chosen brainrot/racist reels interspersed in there, lol (and that applies to most social media).
mackeye··on Programming languages used for music
i was transcribing some songs for violin after picking it back up (mostly metal, which i have to take some liberties with to sound good on a violin + kick drum :> ), and thought about writing a language (maybe a rust steel module) to hand the typesetting for me, as writing out & erasing e.g. slurs can take a while. but lilypond really is good enough that there wasn't much about it i'd want to change, either syntactically or semantically (as really, i only need a very small subset of it). any language i do write, if i choose to, would probably use it as a backend --- its rendering is very good :)

they clarify that point in the first sentence of that header,

> i mean, in some sense if you work as a professional programmer it is a competition, because the job market sucks right now.

mackeye··on I'm just having fun
> If you derive your identity from being a programmer you are actually harmful

why mandate compartmentalization to this extent? what is so harmful about software as art (or expression, etc.)? if i write a weird personal project, what "misfortune" would i bring to you as a coworker, lol

mackeye··on I'm just having fun
> to make people want them to stop

in the sense of "writing a brainfuck compiler in ed," not in making them so uncomfortable they beg for release. plus, "feminization" is not a fetish, at least in the sense of making rustc say "i love you;" that feels incredibly uncharitable.

mackeye··on Using Python for Scripting
nushell (https://www.nushell.sh/) is essentially perfect for this use case! i use it rather than posix(y) shells for most projects where id normally reach for python.
mackeye··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
try thumb-key [0] if you're willing to go for something unorthodox :-) the swipe-style keyboard cut my typos by ~90% (though i was particularly bad at using phone keyboards, lol).

mackeye··on Closest Harmonic Number to an Integer
> For small n we can directly implement the definition. For large n, the direct approach would be slow and would accumulate floating point error.

is there a reason the direct definition would be slow, if we cache the prior harmonic number to calculate the next?

mackeye··on The hardest program I've ever written (2015)
semantic code style varies plenty between people; i can often tell who wrote which code, among the members of my research group, even though we format our code. i'd prefer to be recognized by my preference for short lambdas (vs. defs) and partial functions, than my preference to put if statements on one line.
mackeye··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
did you have an issue with the parentheses or the capitalization :)
mackeye··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
ime, the benefit of vscode over a text editor (i prefer kakoune, which has present, but low, community support vs. n?vim/emacs) was relatively seamless debug sessions. almost any other element is exceeded in an editor, to me --- the git integration of vscode is subpar, most vscode plugins i'd need have standalone counterparts (tinymist is the best example), etc. in emacs, these are exacerbated, as git integration is emacs is excellent (as i hear), and many integrations for emacs are well-maintained. what do you see as the benefit of vscode over an editor?

i haven't used cursor, and i've used clion only minimally. visual studio is quite a standup ide experience, and i'd use it were i on windows. but vscode doesn't seem particularly above the competition in terms of sheer capabilities.

mackeye··on Some people can't see mental images
i can visualize only faint wireframes and blobs, if that makes sense. the closest analog is, my internal monologue can speak, as if i were to physically speak, but i cannot "hear" it with my ears. i can visualize "where" each part of a composite scene should go (e.g., my laptop on a table, with a whiteboard in front of me, and a window to my left), and rotate a representation of the scene, but there is no visual component aside from a very plain outline, if i concentrate.

speaking to people who claim to be able to visualize colorful scenes in 3d, with sound, etc., and truly see the scene before them --- there is probably _some_ variance. i wouldn't say it affects my cognition, but how could i really know? i've never asked my friends, but i imagine the percentage of people who use 3d visualization to reason, e.g., complex math, is small, given the number of people i've seen use the right-hand rule on exams :) (especially given aphantasia is supposedly quite rare).

i attended a talk recently on experience with organic chemistry pedagogy at a university for deaf students. few requisite terms are defined in american sign language, so the professor formed a committee to create 400 or so signs. "tetrahedral" uses four fingers in a tetrahedral formation, "chiral" moves one hand about the other to simulate a mirror, etc. education of stereochemistry wasn't necessarily heavy on visualization, as you can draw the molecule and reason about it without conceptualization in 3d, but i caught that i'd often look at clocks for R/S rotation problems (where clockwise-counterclockwise in 3d was relevant).

mackeye··on Life After Work
colonial revolutions tended to be fought by those for whom death was preferable to existence. i don't disagree that, in this age, the chance of success is slimmer, and will continue to shrink as such --- there's probably some critical mass of capital fortification which is unpenetrable without worker leverage
mackeye··on Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization
i think this is a good article, but these statements,

> If populism is merely a strategy, not an ideology, then why are certain ideas seemingly present in all populist movements (such as the hostility to foreigners, or the distrust of central banking)? > For example, why are “the people” always conceptualized as a culturally homogeneous mass, even in the context of societies that are quite pluralistic (which forces the introduction of additional constructs, such as la France profonde, or “real Americans”)?

... are not quite as applicable to left-wing populism (for the latter --- at least, at the surface). post-colonial, _left-wing_ populism tended to be of international character, or at least of wider appeal than the nation (e.g., nasser). the "distrust of central banking" is of wildly unique impetuses for left- vs. right-wing populism.

the common-sense point is quite poignant, at least for me in the u.s., where each party paints their own solutions as explicitly "common-sense", for solutions as unique as harsh border control ("solutions") vs. city-owned grocery stores & free childcare.

there are certainly issues i imagine i don't hold the "elite" view on. many people don't consider the "elite" view at all --- anti-punitive justice, for example, is rejected for particular types of crimes, despite provenly worse outcomes if we simply punish these crimes. the rise of anti-intellectualism doesn't help :D

mackeye··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
apologies, i probably should've written `fmt` there (which does the same thing). `reflow` is a `fmt` clone i wrote, without the knowledge `fmt` existed --- that was a bit embarrassing for a friend to eventually point out, that my idea was already in coreutils :D i use `fmt` now because i figure it's far better tested (i think it's posix), but i still think of the action as a "reflow", and that's also the term helix uses.
mackeye··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
(for kakoune, not helix) i've used kakoune daily for almost 2 years now, and i still mix up e.g. `(?<!` vs `(?!<` for lookbehind regexes. i appreciate the ability to select a region and watch whether my regex has selected what i expect.

but, this is probably less important than the simplicity of the selection first model, as it ties into multisel, etc. a selection is a cursor and an anchor. other keys manipulate the selection(s) in very particular ways, which are predictable. external tools interface easily with the selection format, as it represents cursors and anchors.

each benefit taken alone is quite small, but together they offer kakoune a very lean, predictable design when combined with its use of external programs for tasks like sorts or paragraph reflows.

helix is similar to kakoune w.r.t. the editing model. kakoune has `w` to select the next word (and move the anchor to the start of the next word), and `W` to select the next word (and keep the anchor where it is, so you now have two words selected). helix has `v` to enter visual mode, which is essentially equivalent to caps lock with kakoune --- `vw` in helix is equivalent to `W` in kakoune (i believe).

i think selection first is better, but i think it's fair to prefer vim's style, obviously. but there's certainly ample reasoning, though helix might not explain it thoroughly, because (at least, at one point) they may have expected users to have viewed kakoune previously, and understand its philosophy, as helix is essentially a batteries-included kakoune (and kakoune explains the reasoning quite thoroughly).

mackeye··on Notes on switching to Helix from Vim
in kakoune, this is `<a-i>p<a-j>|reflow<ret>`. which is obviously not as simple as `gq`, but you can rebind this, add things like auto-reflow as you type, etc., rather trivially, and rebind them (and a lot of these types of tools come preloaded as bindable commands). it's some work to set up this type of thing (and it makes perfect sense to use e.g. vim to not need to do that), but i like the composable design, where i can write some configuration to hook a shell command to a bind, rather than fork and PR changes (e.g. a c++ reflow function), and the config files can be written and PRd into the default distribution as well, so the user experience would be equivalent.
mackeye··on Conservative justices signal openness to allowing conversion therapy
anecdotally, my trans friends who took puberty blockers and eventually started hormones are happier for it, and my trans friend who was sent to conversion therapy jumped in front of a train (and lived, and is well now).

the literature is relatively sparse on puberty blockers, though. i found a review [0] which is inconclusive, but points to better psychosocial outcomes at the expensive of factors such as bone density and emotional stability.

i do think it's crucial to point out that the dichotomy is not "puberty blockers vs. nothing", but "puberty blockers vs. gender dysphoria". i recently read a piece about the extremely poor treatment of an SRS patient, who reflected 10 years later and claimed she'd still go through the treatment to have had the surgery, as she would likely not be here otherwise. the description of the surgery frankly made me dizzy with unease (and i work in the surgical OR). it's a sensation i imagine is not at all unfamiliar to trans people. as i understand it, they are born with this unwanted operation performed in advance, and live through this, and eventually an unwanted puberty.

the issue is then, how do we alleviate this? conversion therapy is conclusively, not an answer. puberty blockers are inconclusive, from what i understand, but the research which has been performed points to lower suicide attempt rates among trans kids.

what!? conversion therapy does not work. if you, your child, and your doctor all agree that the best thing for them is a lobotomy, should that be allowed?
mackeye··on Israel wants to train ChatGPT to be more pro-Israel
this is a long-tired sympathy of colonialism. social relations are slow to advance --- and slow further when under occupation, or (e.g.) a genocide. it's not as if gay marriage is legal in israel.
mackeye··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
i think it's the opposite, that they _want_ file_10.txt to come before file_9.txt by default, but that file explorers fail at this. it's rare that i want true alphabetical sort, but it's convenient for cases like tfa where alphabetical sort is more predictable if i have filenames that look like <letters>_<numbers-of-same-length>.txt.

mackeye··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
if you can't find rationality (or the root of ideology) in either side of the conflict, you haven't tried particularly hard.

israel's existence and industry is in the interest of the global bourgeoise. "what to do" with the palestinians they displaced has lingered until they were boldened enough by their utter impunity to enact the measures they've taken. israel is the final "classically" imperial nation: to proceed in any manner which favors the palestinians remotely strips the modern colonial empire of its credulity in its own eternal existence.

hamas is an anti-colonial bourgeois movement, of which we've seen many. their are less reactionary elements within the palestinian resistance as well. this pattern has emerged many times in e.g. north africa, what's unique about palestine is that its anti-colonial war has persisted 60 years past the ends of the others.

colonialism is suffocation. it serves only the u.s., israel, etc., to see it as a tit for tat and shield your eyes from any news out of the entire region.

...and, your last sentence is unreal, to be honest. it's a genocide, and you're curious why no one would like to take the unfortunate undesirables at the receiver's end? are you so immune to ideology?
