macilacilove··on Cash Aid to Poor Mothers Increases Brain Activity in Babies
I really wonder if such research is motivated by trying to understand babies' brain development or something else...
macilacilove··on Mozilla Rally
After reading Mitchell Baker's "deplatforming isn't enough" rant pushed at me by Firefox, I expect nothing good out of Mozilla under the current leasership, sorry.

This really is the kind of thing that could uncover some very shady practices by Facebook and others, but I expect it to produce the same kind of bullshit as the recent "Facebook whistleblower" who worried that facebook is not abusing its power sufficiently to censor and unperson people.

macilacilove··on In rare cases, coronavirus vaccines may cause Long Covid–like symptoms
If you can prove me mathematically that I am better off with the vaccine I will take it. Seriously. I believe I have sufficient background in math and I am willing to pick up extra if needed.

I could give you background info on me (age, health, covid status etc) but you said you could prove it for all possible hn commenters so I'd keep my privacy.

macilacilove··on No One Can Explain Why Planes Stay in the Air
"The page you were looking for could not be found. " Maybe someone found out since then. :)
macilacilove··on In rare cases, coronavirus vaccines may cause Long Covid–like symptoms
That was exactly one of the key worries expressed by Robert W Malone(quite relevant expert to say the least), who is not even anti-vaxx, but argued that people should have informed consent over their health, but the censors thought othervise.
macilacilove··on EU Parliament pushes to ban ads targeting health, religion, sexual orientation
yes. I think tha change is from now on you can not target your ad for only conservatives/ only socialist leaning people (as determined by their browsing data).

You used to be able to send socialist ads to socialists and conservative ads to conservatives... and be everything at the same time and win. Its like a cheat code of politics.

Now to do this you have to promise Zuck to not support any antitrust and data protection regulation in return Zuck will probably take you to office by microtargeting. You don't need to worry about the media, facebook will "fact check" everything for you.

You can still target nonpolitical ads based on other attributes if it is not specific to very few people.

macilacilove··on EU Parliament pushes to ban ads targeting health, religion, sexual orientation
FB & google already voluntarily banned buying politically targeted ads for money. [1]

A politician needs to give big tech something other than money to get their messages to be favourably targeted.

Don't forget that they already have access to virtually infinite money through abuse of market dominance, the only thing that can stand in their way is antitrust and data regulation.

macilacilove··on Meta AI: Fist high-performance self-supervised algorithm for multiple modalities
It seems that they pass everything through an autoencoder first, and a different network tries to predict from a partially masked input the "correct" autoencoder latent space representation of the unmasked input. If it works, the decoder of the autoencoder can generate(guess) the unmasked data from the latent space.
macilacilove··on EU Parliament pushes to ban ads targeting health, religion, sexual orientation
Can facebook still target any content based on anything? In other words only outsiders are are restricted from buying some of the manipulation power of facebook but not fb and its strategic partners?
macilacilove··on [dead]
Are you some kind of remote-sensing doctor that can tell someone is "very ill" based on... probably your desire to dismiss his views. As if it had any relevance.

He said that he was "back to my regular self", other than feeling fatigue, and was cautiously optimistic about his prospects in 2020 after a lengthy struggle with autoimmune issues and addiction to a prescription drug.

macilacilove··on The mystery of social behavior in octopuses
Very few humans cut themselves and it has very limited health consequences for those who do.

Evolution predicts that self-harming behaviour will be observed less frequently compared to self benefitting behaviours.

So whenever an apparently self-harming behaviour is observed it is quite useful to ask: "is it really self-harm or secretly useful somehow?". And also: "how often does that really happen?"

macilacilove··on Covid-19 vaccines and treatments: we must have raw data, now
The public needs the data, so the public need to pay for it. We absolutely can. Yet the FDA says "sorry only 500 pages a month" which means 110 months.
macilacilove··on The mystery of social behavior in octopuses
Why is eating your tentacle useful when "stressed"?

Eating your tentacle is a net negative in "calories" long term, and there is probably the opportunity cost of not having said tentacle (for some time?)

I guess maybe they want a quick snack for the high energy jet propulsion predator escape that they are preparing for when stressed.

But then Hesoid is kid of right, they do eat it because they need more energy.

macilacilove··on Can artificially altered clouds save the Great Barrier Reef?
Orders of magnitude should matter in an insightful conversation.
macilacilove··on Thousands of Ukrainians are training in case Russia invades
Maybe I agree with the cyber warfare, but there is no indication that these people are going to be involved in cyber warfare, let alone change the outcome.

This news is very analogous to "thousands registered to vote whatever party in the US elections".

macilacilove··on US Government plans to force all new vehicles to have a “kill switch”
automotives to become "governmotives": takes you wherever the government approves you to be.
macilacilove··on Thousands of Ukrainians are training in case Russia invades
How is this interesting for Hacker News? Also, 'thousands' is a small number.
macilacilove··on Rwanda forcibly vaccinating people against COVID, victims say
If the prion protein was discovered a few decades earlier, a certain Austrian dictator could have used this method to kill much more with much less of the hassle. Think a specific vaccine fore each "race".
macilacilove··on People Are Keeping Unvaccinated Covid Deaths Secret
Government, health organizations such as CDC & WHO and "authoritative" news sources.

They may want to promote the vaccines because they are good, and they want the pandemic to be over right?* The question is whether they are doing it honestly or not. I think not. They decided that there is a conclusion that they want people to reach, and they are willing to go as far as obstructing facts to make you reach that.

* they may have additional reasons related to conflicts of interest, corruption, etc.

macilacilove··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
> spin off gaming into an independent company at some point

Unlikely without regulatory intervention. The added value for MS shareholders here is that MS has now more leverage to gently heard gamers towards their platforms.

macilacilove··on Long Covid: probably worth avoiding–some considerations
"Lesswrong" is still very much wrong. I have read a highly upvoted article on lesswrong early 2020 that conjectured each consecutive reinfection will be worse than the previous and similar guesses based on... fear porn?
macilacilove··on People Are Keeping Unvaccinated Covid Deaths Secret
I think authorities are keeping vaccinated non-covid deaths secret. Or maybe not. But we will not learn the answer from theatlantic.com.
macilacilove··on The Big Business of Uyghur Genocide Denial
I wonder if video games will be more free to tell complementary "anti-CCP" stories now that games are mostly banned in mainland China anyway so the CCP has less leverage?
macilacilove··on Ireland to launch basic income program for artists
you can not take both income tax and VAT into account, because VAT is payed by the retailer really. That would count VAT twice.
macilacilove··on Unredacted Antitrust Complaint Shows Google’s Ad Biz Even Scummier Than Imagined
Here is what to say engineers:

(1) BidManipulation is only used in some testing/market simulation environment.

(2) only used in cases where some pricing bug/weird legal issue happened that needs some tweaking to be corrected.

(3) only used in some weird markets where it is legal.

(4) implement many weird obscure features for "next generation ad experience marketplace stuff" and push them to production leaving it to higher ups to configure which combination of them are being used at which market.

(5) empower engineers to come up with additional "whacky ideas" and keep a culture where it is assumed that almost all of them are not passing legal review but they could be enabled at any time.

Not a recommendation.

macilacilove··on The Theoretical Minimum (2013)
I am not a physicist but I have gone through most of the courses. It is aimed at preparing you to be able to read theorethical phisics research papers. It is not supposed to be practical and is ignoring engineering physics and history of phsics for the most part.

I think you can learn here the core concepts in theorethical phisics even at the masters program level, but you will not go through the same "math muscle training" that college students go through, so you will have to supplement that from elsewhere.

macilacilove··on Beijing locks down office building after single Omicron case
I think the CCP strategy against the coronavirus is that they supress the data to reduce panic and continue economic activity.

From time to time they throw in some major lockdown theatre like this one to make it superficially plausible that they are successfully fighting the virus with lockdowns.

As an added bonus western lockdown enthusiasts may be encouraged to lock down their economies, even though that seems to not work well even for an island nation like Australia.

macilacilove··on A high-dimensional sphere spilling out of a high-dimensional cube
In lower dimensional projections the inner sphere will be so big that it overlaps with the smaller spheres. So much so that it intersects with the enclosing cube too. It will not develop the weird spike protein things like in the illustration in any projection.
macilacilove··on Ask HN: Anyone considered being phone-free?
There are many different reasons to be phone free, like (1) avoid tracking, (2) avoid interruptions, (3) removing big tech from your life, aka. degoogling (4) general dislike of all electronics, etc.

all of this have different consequences and mitigating options, so it would be relevant to know what exactly is that bothers you.

macilacilove··on YouTube banned most videos from “JCS – Criminal Psychology”
That channel had high quality psychological explanations of suspects' and police's behaviour during interrogations.
