maaaats··on A 127-year-old physics riddle regarding the Kelvinangle in boat wakes solved
According to you. Another answer says it's convection. So not so intuitive after all ;)
maaaats··on A new AMP update shows how it can infiltrate every corner of the internet
Google intentionally gimps Firefox on Android, by serving an old-school page. Using an addon (which you can on mobile Fx, and not on Chrome), fixes this by editing the UA string when visiting Google.

Getting the "nice experience", however, gives me amp links. And when I click on them, I'm unable to scroll?! It doesn't matter if it loads fast, when I cannot read beyond the fold.

It also breaks the "open in app" I normally have. If the link is a reddit link, for instance, I can press an icon in Firefox to have it open in "Reddit is fun".

maaaats··on Hundreds of extreme self-citing scientists revealed in new database
It doesn't say that self-citation is wrong per se, but that some people use it to game their citation count to the extreme.
maaaats··on Ultra marathon runner earns awards for both first place woman and overall winner
The issue is that the man didn't get a trophy for winning his class. Most times, that's the overall trophy, and then there's an additional one for the fastest woman.

So the article is clear enough, I think, given that most runners know this already.

Edit: I haven't commented on if I think this is a good thing or not, just explaining the article.

maaaats··on Ceramic-bearing bicycle drive shaft (2018)
I might be a bike fanatic, but I'm no professional athlete and I can sustain more than 200W for hours, so my guess is the pro's are quite a bit higher again. (Your point still stands, though)
maaaats··on Ceramic-bearing bicycle drive shaft (2018)
Or snowy with salt in the winter. For winter cycling the weight isn't really an issue for me, the bike is already sluggish with big studded tires and accessories and clothing etc. Maybe I will try it, the serviceability cannot be worse than the stuff I have to do now to maintain it..

maaaats··on Monzo urges 480k customers to change their pin numbers

It's your personal personal identification number number

maaaats··on Apple suspends Siri response grading in response to privacy concerns
That's one thing I like with GDPR. It has to be informed consent for a lot of cases. Can't hide it and say you agreed to whatever in a hidden EULA.
maaaats··on More Older Couples Stay Together Because They Live Apart
You should know the context before saying "nothing". The reason most laws like these exist, is because it used to be more normal to have a stay-at-home-mom, and the male making all the money. Just because the woman didn't contribute with cold, hard cash to the household, she still contributed.
maaaats··on More Older Couples Stay Together Because They Live Apart
How is it cynical? If something, it's wholesome to see people make nontraditional things work for them.
maaaats··on More Older Couples Stay Together Because They Live Apart
It's disingenuous to refer to their relationships as merely dating, when they have lasted for more than a decade. And when it's not dating, you don't really have a point.
maaaats··on Surprisingly popular
The article should state clearer that the answer is no, as it made no sense to me before reading your comment. (Edit, it's fixed now)
maaaats··on What Swimming Taught Me About Happiness
What about other bodies of water than the ocean? Like lakes or somerhing. Mostly still water.

Or where I live, they have put swimming lanes in the ocean. Like a dock that extends out on two places, and with lane separators in between. Free and safe.

But what I did was to just pay for a swimming course over X weeks. That included entrance to the swimming facilities on the course days. Find one for your level, and the progress will be swift.

maaaats··on What Swimming Taught Me About Happiness
This year I'm doing a "Swedish Classic", which is 4 long distance races throughout the year. Three of them are the classics in triathlon, but the fourth is cross country skiing (or "nordic skiing"). So the opposite of fire, hmm, but could maybe say that fire is what makes it possible to traverse 90km of mountains in the winter.
maaaats··on America’s Highest Minimum Wage Sparks Fight in Small California City
Same in Norway just this year. Removing lots of cars from the city centre, people complaining, then the data shows it was not really an issue.
maaaats··on Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation
It also documents the process, which is often lacking for these one-offs tasks.
maaaats··on A personal story about 10× development
You could have been a 10x developer if you taught him how to do it. A single developer can only scale so much, a true 10x developer is one that scales the output of those around as well.
maaaats··on Berkeley first city in California to ban natural gas in new buildings
Well, frankly one does. A heater on some of the walls has been enough for our family home in Norway for decades. Not sure how it's "wildly inefficient". Could always install a heat pump if so.

And if it were true that one cannot just plug in some heaters, one would then have to integrate something better into one's home... how is that still more pain than having to exactly that for the gas to work? Not sure about the safety concerns are anything compared to burning gas, either.

maaaats··on Berkeley first city in California to ban natural gas in new buildings
> Electric heating can be a pain when compared to gas heating

How? I've never used gas, but electricity is plain simple. Just plug whatever in any outlet and turn it on, how is that a pain?

maaaats··on Google Search is routinely gamed by private blog networks
It was possible years ago I think? Vaguely remember to having blocked experts-exchange, quora and other you-must-be-a-member-to-actually-see-the-content pages
maaaats··on Zelda Screen Transitions Are Undefined Behaviour
What a cool project!
maaaats··on Google Search is routinely gamed by private blog networks
Their job is to automatically distribute content on fake blogs and fake social media profiles, not too far out to think they do the same with their own services, pumping them with comments from fake profiles.

The first post on the first page of that thread is an interesting read, what a way to market your services.

maaaats··on Maps Reveal the Difference in How Cities Are Perceived by Tourists and Locals
My dad in his youths was a tour guide for bus trips from Sweden down into Europe. He has admitted he made up lots of trivia about the castles and stuff they passed.

He is a history buff, though, knowing "everything" about every king and fight the last centuries in Europe. So I think what he told would be plausible and rooted in truth. But makes me wonder about the stories he told me as a kid, before smart phones that could rebuff his tales.

maaaats··on We can't get enough of audiobooks
Currently this feature in Audible is implemented in a way that makes it unusable for me: I add 10 min timer. Almost falling asleep when the time us up, but not fully, so I would like to continue. So I gently press play on my headset. But then the timer is off, so if I fall asleep it will play for hours. So to combat that, I have to bring up my phone and add a new timer. This takes me out of the almost-falling-asleep, and back to square one.
maaaats··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle?
That relies on the front fork being at an angle, though, doesn't it? If they made it straight down (which is the obvious choice) or pointing backwards, it would be much, much harder to ride.
maaaats··on Amazon can be held liable for third-party seller products: U.S. appeals court
People think they buy from "Amazon" and not a "marketplace", as it's how it used to be. Even though it's now more or less just a high-valued ebay clone. Hundreds of duplicates, lots of shitty items.
maaaats··on The Energy Cost of Electric and Human-Powered Bicycles (2004) [pdf]
> The metabolic efficiency of a human on a bicycle is remarkably good. Calorimetric studies have shown that a properly trained athlete will have efficiencies of 22 to 26% depending on pedal cadence and power output.

Anectdote about this, is that my watt meter on my bicycle gives out the total amount of work done in kJ at the end. To convert that to kcal in food, one can convert 1-to-1, as the metabolic efficiency matches roughly the ratio between kcal and kJ.

maaaats··on Buy Low-Tops, Sell High-Tops: StockX Sneaker Exchange Is Worth $1B
From the article: > The fervor for sneakers has been fueled by “sneakerheads” and others who regard the shoes as investment assets.

Like beanie babies, perhaps? Or is there anything driving the value here other than potentially future value? (Not that different from stocks, some may argue, but..)

Edit: Based on votes this strung a cord on some people..
