maaaats··on What happens when a city bans cars from its streets?
Hit and a miss, but you still managed to be offensive and elitist.

People always tout these things as if it invalidates the whole idea. You like to go to the mountains in the weekend? Cool, do so, doesn't mean you need to drive to work everyday. Want to visit your family in a city having banned cars? Sounds awful the way you put it, but don't you think things change with time? People adapt. Maybe the closeness to family becomes a factor next time you move. Or banning cars improves public transport infrastructure.

I'd think that proves the opposite: Even though it hurt the Norwegian government's relationship with China, the committee still went ahead with their decision.

> I think they should have made a different choice.

Yes, you've asserted that several times here, based on next to no information.

As for recruiting, using Elm has put Vy in the spotlight several times the last years. So even if most people aren't elm developers, I think this has at least given lots of potential candidates a positive view on working there.

maaaats··on Re-writing the site of Norway's largest transport provider in Elm
I might be in a bubble, but my perception is that the Elm community in Norway is fairly established. Regular meetups, and a really well-organized conference earlier this year.
maaaats··on I was just subjected to the most credible phishing attempt I’ve experienced
One I almost fell for, was a tab that changed to a Gmail login screen in the background. When I switched to it, I thought I had gotten logged out and entered my password. Luckily 2fa saved me. Did not use a pwd-manager at the time, that also would probably have prompted some red flags when it didn't auto-fill.
maaaats··on It's time to ban cars from Manhattan?
That's such a cop-out.

Either people will shift, moving or working someplace else. Or buses can be added (and more effective not being stuck behind thousands of cars).

Removing cars doesn't happen in a vacuum.

maaaats··on Do you have a problem? Write a compiler
Some languages have constructs that make it possible to make pseudo-DSLs in them. For instance function with receivers in Kotlin. That's a nice tradeoff I think.
maaaats··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
Yeah, not cheap, but my company let me choose between that and a top of the line macbook, and since my previous macbook was a catastrophy I switched setup entirely.

The weight isn't too bad, I have it in my backpack commuting by bike in hilly Norway. But maybe too heavy for a shoulder bag. The battery time is useless, yes, so that's the big tradeoff. But since I bike instead of commuting by train or so, I never used my previous laptop not plugged in anyway.

maaaats··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
Not at my laptop until monday so not sure about all details, but almost that, yes. It's a top specced P1. Xeon but 6 cores I think. 64gb ddr4. 1500mb/s read I think it was on the SSD.

Not silent, exactly though, hehe.

maaaats··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
I got a Lenovo laptop with roughly the same specs, though.

In Norway, it's not based on the price, but the product type. So TVs in general are said to last at least 5 years. So if you sell a cheap tv that breaks after 4 years, you have to replace it.

This of course means one don't get as much ultra cheap stuff sold, but at the same time most of that stuff is crap, and it's better for the environment to build stuff that lasts.

maaaats··on [dead]
Who are "they"?
maaaats··on [dead]
If that's so, couldn't the right instead find some acceptable ways to handle it (without increasing taxes), instead of sweeping it under the rug?
maaaats··on [dead]
Yeah, I've seen lots of comments on how she's a left-wing puppet, or why they didn't get some scientist knowing what they speak about up there instead of a kid.

But

- Why is caring about climate left-wing?

- It's the same people ignoring the scientists, that write this crap, so no, a scientist speaking doesn't solve anthing. Unfortunately. It wouldn't have come to this then.

I bought a rubber duck for fun after reading the first passages as a student. Sincr then I've been known as the rubber duck guy and people constantly gift me them. They are all over the office.
maaaats··on How we hacked Blackboard and changed our grades (2018)
Yes, this was 10 years ago. I may even misremember, maybe it was a unsecured single sign on in front or something where the fault actually was.
maaaats··on How we hacked Blackboard and changed our grades (2018)
We used It's Learning in "high school". It had login without https at the time, and on the school wifi it was then easy to listen and get other's credentials. Some people got hold of some teachers' credentials, and tried to remove or alter some minuscule data.

One guy however, decided to sell grade-editing as a service to others. Of course it was noticed by the school, and it became a big deal with police involved and everything. Happy ending, though, the two people I know that was involved got master's in compsci a few years later.

maaaats··on MSVC's implementation of the C++ Standard Library
Webkit is Apple, yes, but it was a fork of something existing (khtml)
maaaats··on Test-driven development: A great idea hiding behind a terrible implementation?
I have learned and used TDD before, but I don't do TDD. I am, however glad I learned it, as it influences the way I write code now to the better. (Think more before I start writing, for instance, and writing smaller testable units of code up front). Much in the same way learning a new programming language/paradigm also can change how you write code in the old language.

maaaats··on Has SHA-256 been broken?
While not saying how they did it, shouldn't they be able to prove it? By showing some colliding hashes or so?

> Check out the CSS behind it all here if you want to see CSS being used as a programming language

Could you explain the process behind the CSS, how it works?

maaaats··on Show HN: Cyberpunk web design made easy, really easy
Cool, I tried to make a UI some time ago, with interlocked boxes that had depth [0], and it was a real hassle to get everything lined up properly with the borders. So much I didn't bother getting it done as it was only for a fun workshop. Could this be done with this css?

maaaats··on Game developer loses multiplayer service code
Those people probably bought it years ago. They could've lied and said they were closing down without anyone batting an eye.
maaaats··on Creating a Magical Videobooth for a Wedding
I really like how the lines wiggle a bit, makes it seem so much more alive. Is it because the drawing algorithm is unstable, or is it an intentional addition?

I love the hacker spirit shown and the detailed writeup of the process.

I know of a couple renting out photo boots for weddings, this could actually be a product sold. What they do for consistent lighting is that the booth is big enough to have walls and ceiling, giving them full control.

maaaats··on A history of Tetris randomizers (2018)
> The 7-bag has a consistent piece output, making it more predictable. It’s easy to know where in a bag you are, and when a piece you need might come. Because of how predictable this random generator is, it’s actually possible to play forever. Overall it’s a silly system that makes you wonder how it ever became the official randomizer.

I actually like the bag one, knowing where in a bag you are gives an edge, and thus it adds an extra dimension to the game I feel.

maaaats··on Programming shape using kirigami tessellations
To add, we discussed this at work this week, and someone tried cutting the example on our laser printer. Broke when trying to expand it, though.
