ma2rten··on Why I Work on Ads
I don't know if it was mentioned here but another issue that many people have with Google specifically is it's perceived monopoly position and market power.
ma2rten··on Why I Work on Ads
Have you considered that people might have different world views?

Some might find

1. all advertising unethical

2. targeted advertising unethical

3. not consider advertising unethical

4. consider the product that is being advertised

ma2rten··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
They can make use of COBRA and use some of that money to pay for that.
ma2rten··on Parsing Protobuf at 2+GB/S: How I Learned to Love Tail Calls in C
But this seems to be an edge case where you have to rely on functional programming and experimental compiler flags to get the machine code that you want.

Portability is typically not a big issue, because you can have a fallback C++ implementation.

ma2rten··on Parsing Protobuf at 2+GB/S: How I Learned to Love Tail Calls in C
Protobuf is also used as a format to write data to disk.
ma2rten··on Parsing Protobuf at 2+GB/S: How I Learned to Love Tail Calls in C
Protobufs are very important for Google. A significant percentage of all compute cycles is used on parsing protobufs. I am surprised that the parsing is not doing using handwritten assembly if it's possible to improve performance so much.
ma2rten··on Ask HN: Maybe I'm just not smart enough?
How much have you studied for those interviews? Very few people could do coding interviews without studying on leetcode before.
ma2rten··on Ask HN: Maybe I'm just not smart enough?
I second the recommendation to looking into ADHD. That might also explain inconsistent results on the IQ tests. You are smart, but you are losing focus when doing them.

However, in some countries ADHD is not taken as seriously especially if you are just hyperactive and not inattentive. I don't know about Russia. You might have to do your own research.

ma2rten··on Why Is All Covid-19 News Bad News?
Ironically, maybe confirming that people are interesting in those articles, I was curious what you can not do if fully vaccinated. There are two things you can not do according to the CDC:

- Visit indoors, without a mask, with people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19

- Attend medium or large gatherings

ma2rten··on Why the United States has the best research universities
I think that is mostly compensated by bachelors taking an additional year.

I don't know if what parent comment says is true at all, but if it is I think it's because historically universities didn't have a Bachelor's/Masters system in Europe. At least in Germany and the Netherlands you would study for 5 years and that is still the expectation. For less academically inclined students there are other options such as trade schools.

ma2rten··on U.S. House committee approves blueprint for Big Tech crackdown
Where did you copy that from? I don't see the report linked anywhere.

EDIT: I found the link further down the thread https://docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU00/20210414/111451/HMKP...

ma2rten··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
I work at Google (the only FAANG company in your list). We would ask about it, but it's not a significant deciding factor.

It might be a deciding factor if you get an interview at all, which team you are interviewing with and for which level. Those decisions are made by recruiters, not interviewers or hiring committees.

ma2rten··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
I don't necessarily agree regarding FAANG. Once someone gets an interview it doesn't matter much what their previous work experience is.
ma2rten··on Google’s lawyer accidentally made a sensitive document public
I wouldn't take what someone says on substack at face value. Does anyone know if the unredacted document is available somewhere?
ma2rten··on Netscape ISP Homepage
I think it what makes it look dated are the shadows and gradients. If they got rid of those it would look pretty modern.
ma2rten··on Exodus: Easily migrate your JVM code from Maven to Bazel
I thought that the distributed part wasn't opensourced.
ma2rten··on Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]
I doubt that it's a lot of money for these companies.
ma2rten··on Microsoft Coffee
It's because it was not released on April fools.
ma2rten··on Microsoft Coffee
This is a good example of how human language is ambiguous. You should read it as in the worst case in prison and in the best case fired.
ma2rten··on Tmux lets you select and copy text with your keyboard
Is that very different from the Terminal in Vim 8.1+?
ma2rten··on Software engineers make excellent CEOs, but few of them think they could do it
I have another hypothesis: People who are experts in the core competence of their companies make better CEOs.
ma2rten··on Testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count
When you see the suggestion you can select "not interested" instead.
ma2rten··on Testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count
Right, according to the tweet this is done based on feedback from creators.
ma2rten··on Amazon union vote count begins this week for Alabama warehouse
If they have good arguments against unionization, I don't think it would be necessarily against their interest to have employees hear the other side as well.
ma2rten··on Amazon union vote count begins this week for Alabama warehouse
Maybe those information sessions should be allowed, but require the company to give equal speaking to union representatives.
ma2rten··on French data protection watchdog casts doubt on Apple’s privacy compliance
However, the CNIL hints that Apple’s definition of tracking could be too narrow, as it does not encompass reading or writing data from the terminal — meaning the use of trackers such as cookies.

What is the terminal referring to here?

ma2rten··on Scaling YC
They never even said that.

1. Any YC advice does not apply to all companies, but only to startups.

2. YC has funded companies in many places.

3. YC is not in SF.

4. This announcement doesn't say anything about location.

Also I'm pretty sure there is no consultancy process.

Generating those low level feature is actually a much easier problem. Here is an example I found using a google image search for "upscaling":

https://copyrightimage.com/2018/05/09/better-image-upscaling...

This is from 2018, which is an eternity for machine learning research.
