m712··on Sweden's 100 explosions this year: what's going on?
Non-technology threads show up on the frontpage every day.
m712··on Moving towards a faster web
So how does this work? Where does Chromium get the data for the websites which load slow? Does this mean that websites which one visits get sent to Google now? Or do they use the existing SafeBrowsing queries to also send page load times? What are the implications of this for tracking?
m712··on Sweden's 100 explosions this year: what's going on?
If people just keep flagging comments that they don't agree with, we will never be able to have a proper discussion about this. Holding a different/non-PC opinion should not be grounds for killing a post. Win with words, not with moderation.

EDIT: The post is also gone from the front page. Upsetting.

m712··on Sweden's 100 explosions this year: what's going on?
This comment did not age well. People don't like to hear opinions that they don't like.
m712··on Sweden's 100 explosions this year: what's going on?
More like arguments that people do not want to hear about.
m712··on Neovim v0.4.0
>Vim also starts up without any noticable delay

Only if you run it without any plugins. Unfortunately if you have a lot of third party packages, vim startup times start to get closer to emacs startup times (both of which are still better than any IDE I have used, of course). I keep a vim.norc alias in my alias file which launches vim with an empty .vimrc for this very reason.

m712··on A captcha that requires your computer to solve equations in the background
On an Intel Celeron B820 @ 1.70Ghz laptop, it took more than 40 seconds to complete and consumed 1% of battery in the meantime. The "complex equations" you are doing will not work on low-horsepower devices like phones or low-to-medium level laptops.
m712··on Firefox 69.0 Released
The good: ETP by default, battery life improvements, flash deprecation (finally!), about:debugging, event breakppints (finally! #2)

The bad: userChrome/userContent not being loaded by default, I don't understand why it would cause a delay at startup.

The ugly: More Pocket crap.

m712··on FreeBSD on the Lenovo Thinkpad
If you are hinting to proprietary systems in your last sentence, you can go ahead and pay someone to lock you into their ecosystem. This is how Free Software works and I wouldn't have it any other way. People work on their own and bring it together into one whole system, and that can cause incompatibilities. However lock-step design is also one of the key ways to destroy innovation. If you lack the desire to learn how to configure your system, then you will probably not want to use a Free system. That's just how it is.
m712··on Show HN: Sourcery – get a free, self-updating website
"Sound" in this context means "makes sense".
m712··on Show HN: Sourcery – get a free, self-updating website
Sorry, what? Are you implying that companies I write code for go out of business? Why do you think that? >well-maintained application architecture Tsk tsk. >WooCommerce Hell I have never experienced this. Can you elaborate?
m712··on Show HN: Sourcery – get a free, self-updating website
I am already aware of that, but why should I have to for basic features? If you need reviews for products, you will need an app developed by Shopify (but for some reason not integrated into their main product - what the hell?) which doesn't interoperate properly with any multi-language app (again, which shouldn't even be an app, as multi-language is a core part of many e-commerce applications) since it generates HTML server-side with embedded texts and returns it as JSONP. Another example is getting orders in a printable format. You need an app for something that could probably be done in 100 lines or less on the Shopify admin's backend. Don't get me started on multi-currency support which you can't even do with an app and need to rewire your entire checkout process to a third party system for. It's an agonizing mess.
m712··on Show HN: Sourcery – get a free, self-updating website
While the concept is sound, I do hope that you will allow users of your service to 'detach' at some point to make their sites into something more complex. Working around Website as a Service limitations is a tremendously tedious haul. I have worked with a Shopify project for a few months now and having to either write or pay for (via an app) functionality that has existed on any self hosted e-commerce for years is really annoying. Not being able to modify backend code impedes development speed as you try to hack around the backend's deficiencies with Liquid. I didn't want this post to be this long but I just wanted to give my experience on this kind of subject and I hope you take appropiate measures to save your customers from dealing with similar issues.
m712··on Standard JS: npm install funding
I seriously don't want this to, well, become the standard. Shoving ads/sponsorships on my face will not make me more enthusiastic about the product that the advertiser is selling, but rather will make me more reluctant to install standard.
m712··on Standard JS: npm install funding
It just seems like they changed documentation and moved some ES5 constructs to ES6, there isn't even a behavior change in those commits. Is this what took 40 hours to update? Why is this worth a major version bump?
m712··on Cities Are Saying ‘No’ to 5G, Citing Health, Aesthetics, and FCC Bullying
Yes, I would love more oligopolies established for home broadband.
m712··on Show HN: TLDR This – Auto summarize any article or webpage in a click
How does this work? Is it Free Software?
m712··on Adblocking: How about Nah?
The title could've been worded better. It makes it sound like the article is against ad-blocking.
m712··on YouTube bans comments on all videos of children
You are accusing an entire group of people of an action that you deem unacceptable. That is rather discriminatory of you.
m712··on Open source, privacy-enabled smartphone operating systems
Even the database has given up on libre smartphones.
m712··on Ways to Get Better at C++
I don't really see any advice here that's not generic.
m712··on Show HN: Sourcetrail – Get productive on unfamiliar source code
Not saying this is bad, but...

Instead of giving money to a tool like this, you could just use ctags/etags, both of which are Free Software. It doesn't show detailed graphs like Sourcetrail does, but it allows source code traversal by function definitions, and supports a crapton of languages.

m712··on Cell – A self-driving web app framework
NO. DO NOT ALLOW THIS. GUYS, YOU CANNOT ALLOW THIS. What if I want to browse a site without Javascript? Will I just see an empty page? Why is page structure (for which a language already exists) being moved to a language designed to assist the language providing the page structure? What is the benefit of this aside from writing everything in a programming language as code which your users have to run, esentially making them run arbitrary code on their own computers? This is stupid. Use HTML. HTML exists for a reason. It is not pretty, I know, but at least it's used for its intended purpose. I don't want to visit $website and have to enable Javascript. Content can exist with just HTML and CSS. Enough of this hipster "Javascript is cool and awesome and amazing" crap.

EDIT: To add to this, I need to enable Javascript on celljs.org, then wait 3 SECONDS for the page to load because they use their own "not a framework" to build the page instead of just using HTML.
