m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Chinese rockets companies are evolving at insane pace, including RLVs. A couple of big milestones have been achieved this year alone, like first stage landing.
m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Not only that - it would be totally insane to launch something heavy & at the same time fragile from earth (under a lot of vibrations & heavy g-loading).

This is all a weird speedrun or race. If something we should be working on setting up resource mining from the Moon & asteroids, materials processing on the Lunar surface & in orbit, simple manufacturing in space, etc.

Instead some people think we can jump straight to a computronium Dyson swarm. :P

m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Cooling in space is hard but not impossible - while current (IMHO stupid without advanced in space infra) space data center projects work with a couple MW, many advanced space propulsion concepts might have to reject hundreds of MW if not a couple GW.

For that you might need more advanced stuff like liquid droplet radiators (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_droplet_radiator), heat sinks & pulsed operation. Still, it should be eventually doable.

As for space data centers - I think the main issue is the complete lack of in space infrastructure for resource mining, processing and manufacturing & maintenance. It is kinda like building your first practical steam locomotive & the deciding to build directly an airliner. No suitable materils, experience, work force, material sources, etc.

We eventually went from locomotives to airliner, in an incremental manner & expanding the supporting infrastructure to support the ever more ambitious projects.

m4rtink··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Given Persona is involved (and thus also Thiel and Palantir) expect everything to be store for ever, sold for profit and misused agains you in the worst way possible.
m4rtink··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Not to mention it is a total silo that is not indexed by search engines and protected by archive.org - one day when Discords VC money finally runs out, it could all vanish in an instant, destroying communities and a lot of culture.
m4rtink··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
It is definitely picking up - you if look at the list of planned launches to the Moon for example, there are quite a few things launching in the next 12 months.

Also I think we need to start looking at smaller institutions and even private companies doing beyond LEO research soon - exactly because of the launch costs going down.

Yet at the same time, traditional big exploration players don't seem to be really able to make use of ti quick enough for some reason (politics ? inertia?).

m4rtink··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
We would need to move people and cargo back and forth eventually, so best to get started on that ASAP. Not to mention sample return has been done from the Moon & asteroid to great success, its a proven concept on how to get the most from the samples.
m4rtink··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
Looks like AI induced inflation will eat a lot of any such gains ?
m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
IIRC it was something like that & even if initially understandable, IIRC it did not really make sense to continue doing that once they were famous enough & had some money to work with (to e.g. pick a more open chip).

That that still have a closed source firmware, which makes it possible for them to pull off the bullshit discussed in the article & this discussion - that proves there was & still is a shady undertone under all that openness facade of the RPi foundation. :P

m4rtink··on I said no and Apple said yes
Undeniable light years ahead in being overpriced & hardest to repair or upgrade.
m4rtink··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
Yeah, this is bad for all kinds of reasons:

- opt-in without user consent

- on already traditionally overpriced Apple hardware

- storage being overpriced to insane levels on top due to the AI bubble

- apple hardware being impossible to upgrade by the user to higher amount of storage due to chips soldered on or artificial limitations on what storage can be installed

If there is enough scrap chips & enough demand, I can still see it work.
m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi 5 EEPROM update now blocks manual RAM upgrades
And that's awesome! Much better than forcing people to throw away stuff by artificial means, so that the corporation can sell it again to them.
m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
They have been doing this from almost the beginning - weird firmware/GPU blobs, camera interface hardware DRM, etc.

Money and greed has been at the first place from the beginning.

m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Thanks a lot RPi foundation, now I know I can get your boards with more RAM without paying the insane prices in your greedy eshop! ;-)
m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Given the how overpriced the high RAM models sold by the RPi foundation are, I think they just can use good RAM and still make a nice profit. Like you know RPi foundation could, if they were not greedy.
m4rtink··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
It is not tjat well known, but this is not the first DRM bullshit from the RPi foundation - they played similar tricks with the camera interface, to force people to use their overpriced camera instead of better and cheaper third party ones.
m4rtink··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
I'm sure you can make it work with HBM chips on adapter boards for PC. And there should be lots of HBM chips from scavengers taking apart bankrupt data centers.

Yeah, they really did some stupid decisions initially on not open sourcing some apps int eh OS. Thankfully they are now finally reversing that decision.

This insane nonsence needs to stop.
m4rtink··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Well, thats kinda how strategic reserves work - so that say food manufacturers just don't dump all the cheap food to sell crack instead & everybody starves to death.

The same governments that dumped bilions into to these companies and gave them insane tax breaks.

If the long term contact are with any AI companies, then good luck getting anything back in bankrupcy proceedings!
m4rtink··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Looking forward to see them burn.
