m4rtink··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
F-35 can shoot stuff, unlike the SR-71.
m4rtink··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
Military fighter jets quite often had external starters to save weight.
m4rtink··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
Yeah, big car engines is actually not that impressive, rather surprisingly primitive. Modern jets have external APUs for starting, usually via compressed air, that have compact yet powerful gas turbines inside.

Sure, less impressive than a contraption with a bunch of car engines but much more powerful.

I bet they are bankrupt by then & the executive team is in jail.
m4rtink··on Dead Money
They should be giving a fuck if those bullshit companies go bust and now they have all their fabs tooled for useless overpriced regular people won't buy.

Also at the same time as Chinese companies massively scaling the production of regular RAM.

m4rtink··on Councilmember, residents push back on AI 'blight scores' given to homes
This is not just about ostracizing the people who attempted to do this - they should be in jail at the minimum.
m4rtink··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
Yeah, this madness has to stop.

I usually don't spite people or companies but in this case I hope all these AI slop bullshit machines fail & fail hard.

So that we can get hardware at sane prices for actually useful thing. And to serve as a warning to never ever do such a stupidly disruptive shit ever again.

m4rtink··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
Sure, that would work - but with the massive ammounts of air needed I would assume those would be quickly clogged and unusable.

For this to work all participants need to play along, not throw a tantrum & actively trying to sabotage the system. In such cases, you need to cut out the faulty participant & continue without them.

Both those who developped it & those controlling it - simple as that.
m4rtink··on Ask HN: Is Opus 5.5 another step change?
No. Next question ?
m4rtink··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
I would guess the natural gas is quite purified by that point, but for the fuel cell to work you need to combine it with air (or to be precise, the oxygen in the air) and a lot of it. So for the fuel cell membranes not to clog with dust and gunk they will have to clean in in some way to prevent issues, ideally without to much extra-energy use or expense per unit of air filtered.
m4rtink··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
I'm really wondering about the air filtering needed for this to work. Gas turbines are already quite sensitive to bigger particles in the air but for the fuel cell membranes, this could be a much harder problem.
m4rtink··on F-Droid 2.0
Where can I actually download the F-Droid 2.0 APK ? Their page directs me to the old version & the old version does not look like it wants to update itself to 2.0... :P
m4rtink··on F-Droid 2.0
Many people are partially color blind, with IIRC most people having issues with properly seeing the green color.
m4rtink··on F-Droid 2.0
Yeah, compared to separate hardware HSMs mobile banking is a massive downgrade in both security as well as user being in control of the hardware they own (by forcing locked down closer source OS & forcing hardware updates).

If mobile banking really wanted to be secure, they would support something like a NFC yubikey for transaction verification. The fact they fully ignore separate secure HSMs tells you what you need to know about their security.

m4rtink··on F-Droid 2.0
That would be like requiring people taking driving lessons before driving cars - what nonsense! Just let them behind the wheel & they will figure it out just fine!
m4rtink··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
Rambalac is so nice - I have been watching his videos for many years & even retraced his steps a couple times during actual trips tp Japan.

One interesting channel I started watching recently is called Watatabi: https://m.youtube.com/@watatabi

Its quite different from Rambalac - called Watatabi: https://m.youtube.com/@watatabi

Its a channel about exploring more remote places, like ancient onsen ryokans, scenic places & natural landmarks. Unlike Rambalac there is editing and naration but in this case it kinda fits the different scope & the places visited are super interesting. :)

Rocket Lab has launch pads in New Zealand.
m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Chinese rockets companies are evolving at insane pace, including RLVs. A couple of big milestones have been achieved this year alone, like first stage landing.
m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Not only that - it would be totally insane to launch something heavy & at the same time fragile from earth (under a lot of vibrations & heavy g-loading).

This is all a weird speedrun or race. If something we should be working on setting up resource mining from the Moon & asteroids, materials processing on the Lunar surface & in orbit, simple manufacturing in space, etc.

Instead some people think we can jump straight to a computronium Dyson swarm. :P

m4rtink··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Cooling in space is hard but not impossible - while current (IMHO stupid without advanced in space infra) space data center projects work with a couple MW, many advanced space propulsion concepts might have to reject hundreds of MW if not a couple GW.

For that you might need more advanced stuff like liquid droplet radiators (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_droplet_radiator), heat sinks & pulsed operation. Still, it should be eventually doable.

As for space data centers - I think the main issue is the complete lack of in space infrastructure for resource mining, processing and manufacturing & maintenance. It is kinda like building your first practical steam locomotive & the deciding to build directly an airliner. No suitable materils, experience, work force, material sources, etc.

We eventually went from locomotives to airliner, in an incremental manner & expanding the supporting infrastructure to support the ever more ambitious projects.
