m3talridl3y··on Mastering Emacs
If emacs expects 3 modifier keys, and emacs is wildly popular with programmers, then why hasn't someone made a keyboard with the windows key renamed and remapped to the missing meta key?
m3talridl3y··on Munchery Valued at About $300M Amid Food Fight
And they say there isn't a bubble. This is a company operating in an already crowded space (aren't there like 50 companies doing local food delivery now?), with no proof of customer base, doing something that is literally more work than walking down to the supermarket and picking up a pack of precooked chicken, collecting millions.
m3talridl3y··on What to do when you need help with WordPress
First, make note of the error message. Just kidding, you just get the "white page of death" with no error message. Good luck.
m3talridl3y··on Can C++ become your new scripting language?
You don't find it useful in ruby or javascript?
m3talridl3y··on Two problems I had to solve in my Oxford interview (2013)
The real question he was asked is: "Did you have access to computer science materials before applying. Prove it by solving these trivia."
m3talridl3y··on Harj Taggar Is Building a New Technical Hiring Pipeline with TripleByte
A real programmer has more than one machine at their disposal. :)
m3talridl3y··on Harj Taggar Is Building a New Technical Hiring Pipeline with TripleByte
> Triple byte. > Not word aligned. > My hardcore c programmer in me is freaking out.
m3talridl3y··on How Zenefits just lost an engineer
Ludicrous. This guy actually believes that anyone on his team really chose to work there for reasons other than income, references, and perhaps a challenging problem or two?
m3talridl3y··on The Rise and Looming Fall of the Engineering Whiteboard Interview
Just like many programmers fail at FizzBuzz, many interviewers have no business conducting interviews. Also remember that these practices will continue until someone educates them. So, the next time you're given 45 minutes to code up a radix sort in a whiteboard, instead start a discussion about interview techniques. The socratic method goes a long way to making people realize just how much they are cargo culting.
m3talridl3y··on The Rise and Looming Fall of the Engineering Whiteboard Interview
Interesting, so I should pretend to be very in-demand to game your interview process. Good to know.
m3talridl3y··on Microsoft makes its case for Windows 10
I'd live to see Bash, in a terminal emulator that isn't terrible, with a working .bashrc file, on windows. Sadly they just don't get it.
m3talridl3y··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
It's really that easy. Pick your favorite software that happens to have broken SSL certs (such as RVM as of a few months ago), and tell them to install it. If they balk a the prospect of disabling SSL cert checking on the wget command, then they're worth their weight in gold.
m3talridl3y··on Oyster is launching an e-book store
What do you mean by limit? Shelf space?
m3talridl3y··on Can they see my dick pic?
Dick pics are seen as a source of humor in our culture. "Can they see my pu*" would be more effective.
m3talridl3y··on The Real Reason College Tuition Costs So Much
Someone needs to build a "spartan" college. Use the cheapest construction materials+. No sports teams++. No extracurricular activities+++. No degrees that aren't in STEM.++++

+ - Does the round glass section contribute to learning in some way? What am I missing? http://newsroom.unl.edu/releases/downloadables/photo/2012091...

++ - If your sports team starts to win, people will wonder why your crappy 10-year-old sports stadium hasn't been demolished and rebuilt. It's 10 years old already! We need at least 30% glass panel coverage on the exterior! Get with the times already!

+++ - You want a robotics club or a harry potter reading club or a javelin-throwing club? Fine, but find your own funding.

++++ - If you really think you're the gods' gift to mankind when it comes to ancient Egyptian art, then by all means, get admitted to an ivy-league-status establishment. The last thing the world needs are more junior-league art majors.

m3talridl3y··on Suburban sprawl is stifling the US economy
And ironically they pay way more in taxes building excessively large public transit systems.
m3talridl3y··on Debunking the Myth of the Job-Stealing Immigrant
Actually, it would be career suicide to say that there are no benefits to immigration.

Let's say that you're a "leading economist". You answer the question "Is immigration a net benefit or a net detriment to <first world country x>" with the carefully-chosen response "Well, immigration comes with benefits and downsides, and they more or less balance one another out. Of course, some people, most notably women and minorities already existing in the country, will be hardest hit".

By the law of the excluded middle, claiming to be ambivalent on immigration would mean that you are either for or against immigration. And since if you were for immigration, you'd just come out and say it, you must be against immigration. And by the law of headlines always choosing to word things in the most sensationalist way, that would mean that you are racist.

m3talridl3y··on Why do Americans not drive diesels?
They why aren't they trying to market diesels to those of us who were born less than half a century ago..?
m3talridl3y··on Mysterious government spy cameras collecting data at post offices
Maybe there's some obscure federal law prohibiting cameras inside the actual buildings? Who knows...
m3talridl3y··on My experience of interviewing for a job at Apple
"Wanted: Someone with the time-management skills to get to the top 10% of developers. Must be willing to show up for 8 rounds of on-site interviews and be prepared for deep philosophical discussions on the merits of mergesort."
m3talridl3y··on Closing the Math Gap for Boys
We should just let the math gender gap go until it counteracts the gender gap in STEM employment.
m3talridl3y··on OlegDB 0.1.5 released: More Go, less Erlang
It's definitely still the best mayonnaise-themed database out there.
m3talridl3y··on Teensy Z80 Part 1 – Intro, Memory, Serial I/O and Display
Beautiful.
m3talridl3y··on Why I Quit OS X – Geoff Wozniak
My solution has been to have multiple computers at my desk. Windows for "serious work" (like playing music, youtube videos), and a text-only linux machine (well, a fullscreened terminal emulator, I need the GUI for clipboard functionality).
m3talridl3y··on Her Task Is to Wean the White House Off Floppy Disks
Floppy disks actually provide a rather pleasant form factor. It's large enough to feel meaningful, wide enough to not get lost between other objects, flat enough to be included in a binder with printed material. The only downsides are transfer speed, data capacity, and lifespan.
m3talridl3y··on Analyzing the FBI’s Explanation of How They Located Silk Road
Nothing will keep you from getting hacked by a determined government, but using Apache/PHP isn't exactly trying to make their life difficult. But at least they didn't use Ruby on Rails. :P
m3talridl3y··on How to destroy Programmer Productivity
I've been working on a tiny little project for 3 weeks now. Because of crushing technical debt that management doesn't support refactoring, it will take me a whole morning to load the project into my brain. Too bad I haven't had a quiet morning in that time. Things being on fire, people asking about the status of a project or bug...
