m3drano··on Yahoo will lay off 20% of staff, or 1600 people
Yahoo! Finance is a pretty good product.
m3drano··on Microsoft just announced a media event taking place tomorrow with OpenAI
Oh, boy.
m3drano··on Gen Z Netiquettes
kay.
m3drano··on Against risk-based authentication (or, why I wouldn't trust Google Cloud)
This article puts consumer accounts, enterprise accounts and what we call robot accounts in the same bag, but the reality is that the three classes of accounts have different authentication and authorisation processes and the risk evaluation is quite different.
m3drano··on IEEE Medal of Honor Goes to Vint Cerf
Well deserved!
m3drano··on Intel's 'historic collapse' erases $8B from market value
Tim Cook has.
m3drano··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating archiver with compression and encryption
I recommend using borgmatic to ease the management of Borg backups.
m3drano··on Bill Gates: Our grandchildren will pay if we don’t fix climate change
oh boy, here we go again.
m3drano··on Things I want from Devs as SRE/DevOps
SRE here too. We need to stop building knowledge ex ante and focus in building capabilities to introspect the service ex post, that is, during the outage. Even if you are told how it works when starting to support it, you'll have other 50 services to support too and will lose (rightfully) track of where things stand at the moment you need.

Build telemetry and convergence into well known platforms to make response easier.

m3drano··on Ask HN: Google Chrome is uploading my password to their password leak API?
Services like Have I been Owned (IIRC Firefox makes use of) work similarly.
m3drano··on Ask HN: Google Chrome is uploading my password to their password leak API?
"Chrome first sends an encrypted, 3-byte hash of your username to Google, where it is compared to Google's list of compromised usernames. If there's a match, your local computer is sent a database of every potentially matching username and password in the bad credentials list, encrypted with a key from Google. You then get a copy of your passwords encrypted with two keys—one is your usual private key, and the other is the same key used for Google's bad credentials list. On your local computer, Password Checkup removes the only key it is able to decrypt, your private key, leaving your Google-key-encrypted username and password, which can be compared to the Google-key-encrypted database of bad credentials. Google says this technique, called "private set intersection," means you don't get to see Google's list of bad credentials, and Google doesn't get to learn your credentials, but the two can be compared for matches." https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/12/googles-password-che...
m3drano··on Jack Dorsey donates to develop decentralized social network protocol [pdf]
Elegant pun!
m3drano··on Elon Musk sells yet another $3.58B of Tesla shares
Could be taxes to be paid?
m3drano··on Elon Musk sells yet another $3.58B of Tesla shares
Is he cashing out now because he does not believe in the long term performance of Tesla? Or this is just cash needed to keep Twitter afloat right now?

If the latter, the amount of cash he is pouring into Twitter will need an spectacular financial performance to recoup it in few years.

m3drano··on Consoles and competition
I entered the article expecting consoles as in terminals and it was as in games :P

Worthy read, though.

m3drano··on Mobile Store Owner Sentenced to 10 Years for Scheme to Illegally Unlock Phones
Excuse my ignorance about the US justice system, but do I get correctly that the Theranos folks got like 11-13 years? Seems disproportionate.
m3drano··on Premium .dev domain with Google costs $850
Many services like Gmail and Twitter to name just two prevent names to be shorter than X chars.

Releasing usernames is bad for impersonation, so we are stuck.

m3drano··on Premium .dev domain with Google costs $850
Gmail has a state-of-the-art abuse prevention system to precisely avoid account reselling, that leads to hijacking and SPAM.

Domain parking has been and still is a business model for so many people.

m3drano··on Apple to allow outside app stores in overhaul spurred by EU laws
These companies may not serve the European market. It's not mandatory.
m3drano··on IPv6 Internet is broken
I'd say this is a Cogent problem. Not an IPv6 nor an "Internet" problem. Tye solution is to single out Cogent and that class of ISPs, like Telefónica in ES.
m3drano··on Twitter Office Supply Auction
I use a Jamboard regularly. Pretty cool device for meetings over Meet (and rather well integrated into the Workspace suite).
m3drano··on Recent Apple updates leading to WiFi issues?
With the sealed system volume modern macOS uses, shouldn't this relatively doable? (It'd be a long long diff of XML plists I guess)
m3drano··on Hetzner continues its growth in the US with a new location
As a long time customer of their dedicated servers first and their Cloud offering now, I can only recommend them and be glad they are growing.

Simple UI, certainly robust infra (for my case at least) and the best, by far, prices in the market.

m3drano··on $6 Pine64 Ox64 SBC features BL808 64-bit/32-bit RISC-V multi-protocol WiSoC
What's a good SBC with a 64-bit RISC-V people use around here? I just can't find any stock of anything.
