m-s-y··on I want everything local – Building my offline AI workspace
It’s functional if your goal is to run models that won’t fit into RAM on a single machine. Functional.

the slow interconnects (yes, even at 40Gbps thunderbolt) severely limit both TtFT and tokens/second.

I tried it extensively for a few days, and ended up getting a single M3 Ultra Mac Studio, and am loving life.

m-s-y··on Linear sent me down a local-first rabbit hole
150ms is sluggish? 4000ms is normal?

The comments are absolutely wild in here with respect to expectations.

m-s-y··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
>does it showcase any level of technical expertise or mastery? No, I'm afraid not.

But it does show that he can develop and ship a popular product, something outside the capability of so many “great engineers”. Good luck generating any revenue on the backs of smart engineers that have no stomach for understanding the nuance of development over and above writing and checking in code.

It breaks my heart that Perl fell out of favor. Perl “6” didn’t help in the slightest.
m-s-y··on US reportedly forcing TSMC to buy 49% stake in Intel to secure tariff relief
No, they are idiots. Not at media consumption, but idiots at life.

There are certain life skills that can be considered “smart” like revisiting your established opinions when presented with new information, or knowing that encountering a new piece of information from a single source doesn’t carry the weight of encountering it in dozens of places, or that making a mistake doesn’t guarantee that your existence is doomed but been presented with a learning experience.

The “stupid” folks refuse to take the simplest steps to better themselves. They refuse to self-evaluate honestly. That’s the root cause. This stupidness results in them being duped and misinformed.

Therefore, when one encounters an uninformed and duped person, it’s not out of line to consider that person “stupid”.

So when people like OP say that people are stupid, it’s not a dig via victim blaming. It’s a judgement that they’re clearly being stupid, that their poor life skills need work because they ended up misinformed.

m-s-y··on What went wrong inside recalled Anker PowerCore 10000 power banks?
It’s always different 10 years ago, though, isn’t? Everything is. Rose colored glasses and all.

I remember these exact same “Chinese quality” threads 10 years ago and they read pretty much the same as this one, complete with the “well 10 years ago I got great stuff” and “yeah 10 years ago was different”.

Cycles, man. Cycles.

How would a corporate DNS block new domains, exactly?
m-s-y··on Fei-Fei Li: Spatial intelligence is the next frontier in AI [video]
The world Is breakable. Any model based on it will need to know this anyway. Am I missing your argument?

…yet.

15 years ago LLMs as they are today seemed like science fiction too.

m-s-y··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
Seeing as how an eruv doesn’t meet the secular (and therefore the legal) definition of a “home” my guess would be no.

I doubt very much this is related to any local Jewish population. Most traffic buttons are placebos these days; the pedestrian signals automatically signal alongside the traffic lights.

The exception would be low-pedestrian-volume areas with lights and crossings reserved specifically for pedestrians.

m-s-y··on A tool for burning visible pictures on a compact disc surface
Same. I had one of these in ‘98/‘99. The disc didn’t even go into a standard tray—-you had to use a caddy that completely enveloped the disc.

> After an eight-hour flight, if you went to bed at 21:00 yesterday, you’ll do the same today. If you had a call at 13:00 yesterday, it’s still at 13:00 today.

Wow. This is amazing. Who knew this only worked with UTC!! /s

Missives like this just make me embarrassed for us “technical folk”.

m-s-y··on Apple App Store guidelines remove ban on encouraging external payments in US
> Most customers are probably going to assume your a con artist if you don't use the official IAP.

and this is apple’s reasoning for why their strict control over the app store is warranted. they want it to be seen as trusted and infallible and that can’t happen if 3rd parties have free reign.

for me, the correct way forward isn’t external referrals. it’s allowing multiple app stores on devices. if you don't want the “untrusted” 3rd party store with more lax dev rules than Apple’s, just don’t use them.

Yes! Ditto for most Electron apps. 1Password, this evil eye is indeed looking right atcha.
m-s-y··on Ask HN: Why is there no P2P streaming protocol like BitTorrent?
> I was thinking most people nowaday have at least 30mbps upload

Even “modern” cities like NYC are limited to a MAXIMUM of 30Mbps upstream due to ISP monopolies and red tape.

It’s getting better, but Spectrum is still literally the only ISP available for many city residents, and their offerings are so lopsided that their highest-end package is a whopping 980/30.

That’s right. If you use the majority of that 980Mbps your IP overhead will gladly take that 30Mbps, leaving you with just about Zero headroom for anything else.

m-s-y··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
It’s iodine in table salt not fluoride. In the US.

Never knew that France fluoridated their salt.

m-s-y··on Show HN: WinCse – Integrating AWS S3 with Windows Explorer

> The strategy is to funnel most users onto an ipad-like platform at most where they have basic productivity apps like word or excel but no ability to run general purpose programs.

And you know this how?

This reads like every macOS fan’s worst nightmare, but there’s zero actual evidence that Apple is going in this direction.

Please share sources if you disagree.

m-s-y··on MacOS sometimes leaks traffic after system updates
FWIW, what you’re seeing is likely just the cached thumbnail that iOS creates for the app-switcher UI, not an interactive web session.
m-s-y··on Serving AI from the Basement – 192GB of VRAM Setup
In the US, it’s fully legal to perform electric/plumbing/whatever work on your own home.

If you screw it up and need to file a claim, insurance can’t deny the claim based solely on the fact that you performed the work yourself, even if you’re not a certified electrician/plumber/whatever.

What you don't want to do is have an unlicensed friend work on your home, and vice versa. There are no legal protections, and the insurance companies absolutely will go after you/your friend for damages.

Edit: sorry this applies to owned property, not if you’re renting

m-s-y··on Rnote – Sketch and take handwritten notes
