lyime··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2021)
Terminal49 (https://www.terminal49.com) | Full-time/Contract | Remote

* Want to help automate global trade? *

Terminal49 us all-in-one ocean shipment and container tracking platform. Shippers, Importers, service providers and other logistics technologies co's use our data dashboard and APIs to track and manage ocean containers around the world. We take a bill of lading/container number and build a pretty picture of shipping containers journey.

>> How does it work: We pull data from every ocean carrier (Remember Ever Given?) and US/Canada port/terminal, then standardize it and push container milestones and other events to our customers (webhooks etc). We track containers for our customers so they don't have to. 9/10 people still manually track container by visiting carrier websites and logging into terminal websites (paste container numbers, click track and then copy status back into a spreadsheet -- not joking).

>> Our Progress: Went from 0 to $1.5MARR over last 14 months and growing at 20+% MOM. Container tracking is just the beginning. We are going to go deep into drayage/ocean visibility and build everything from predictive APIS and APIs to programmatically take actions (pay fees, appointment booking, book drayage etc) on a container.

>> Why join us? We are a team of 5, fully distributed and profitable. We are about to raise our Series A, so it's the perfect time to join an have impact on our roadmap and company culture.

Roles ------

* Software Engineer (Data Pipelines) [Ruby, Postgres, Redis, BigQuery, JS, Python, DBT, Datadog monitoring)

* Integration Software Engineer (APIs and bot automation) [You must be good at scraping]

* Full Stack software engineer (Client Application - 70% front end / 30% APIS) [Ember.js App and Rails APIs)

* PM/Designer/Account Exec/other open roles

lyime··on Udemy S-1 IPO
How come the founders have so little equity?
lyime··on Launch HN: Buoyant (YC S21) – Blimp drones for air freight
Basically why now?
lyime··on Meltano raises $4.2M seed round
Investors would be happy that they get to participate in a project of a bigger company. Typically those opportunities don't exist.
lyime··on Launch HN: Journey (YC W21) – a better tool for selling software
Congrats on the launch, Peter! I want to try this.
lyime··on Marriott Files Lawsuit Against Unknown Robocalls Perpetrators
Can one trace where a call originates from?
lyime··on Show HN: Diahook – Webhooks as a Service
Awesome! Congrats on shipping. We launched Terminal49 APIs with webhooks as first class citizen. So this is top of mind.

There are many industries where push APIs haven't caught up and are much needed.

Let me know if I can help akshay@terminal49.com

lyime··on Show HN: Diahook – Webhooks as a Service
The real value creation here would be turning a GET API endpoint into a webhook service. So your service would monitor the service and push updates on changes / diffs based on certain time interval.

Build that and people will flock to you.

lyime··on MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, says she gave $4.2B to charity
Wow! You are a good human.
lyime··on Your Move, iPad
Yeah that’s understandable. This article is from a software developers perspective. Even though it’s not specifically acknowledged.
lyime··on Qantas offers a seven-hour flight to nowhere
Sounds terrible.

lyime··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
Facebook might have been trying to / already have a data deal in play and probably decided to just buy it out right.
lyime··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
1Password - remove cognitive load and easy ass to all my secrets across devices. Including sharing with family and coworkers

Rubymine - Ruby And JavaScript IDE with powerful SCM, test and debugging tools.

Notion - Shared Knowledgeable and collaboration. Really easy to go from a free form unstructured draft to organized, structured and easily accessible knowledge repo.

Whimsical - My favorite diagraming and wireframing tool.

Notable mentions

Stoplight OPen API editor.

Sunsama - light weight and collaborative todo list with focus on Calendaring

lyime··on Ask HN: What automation tools have you used to replace mundane activities?
That’s a great question. I haven’t tried it but seems like you can access their private API. https://github.com/haochi/personalcapital
lyime··on Ask HN: What automation tools have you used to replace mundane activities?
Automated investing and wealth reporting.

I use a few services to automatically invest money into a few different financial vehicles at a regular basis

* Vanguard finds (bi-weekly transfer into various ETFS)

* Titan Invest (robo advisor bi weekly)

* IRA and 529 (monthly)

I use personal capital to connect see view my cash flow and returns across all my accounts.

I have been doing this for the past 3 years and my returns have increased significantly.

I am 34 and I wish I had started doing this when I was younger.

lyime··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
It’s both.

Continued improvements to battery tech will bring the costs down for Tesla which is important for them to do if they want to succeed.

Custom hardware and software will also give them cost advantage and help them in the long term.

lyime··on Apple: No Macintosh Forks. But the iPad...
That was a different time. They had to do that otherwise they were dead. PPC was not keeping up with Intel.
lyime··on Apple: No Macintosh Forks. But the iPad...
I don’t believe Apple will transition away from x86 anytime soon but for different reasons. They would abandon the pro market if it moved to arm. Most x86 pro applications would have to be rewritten. What would be the incentive for software makers?

Apple might very will be able to bring out a arm stack for consumer market but there is no indication that they can compete with x86 pro or server market.

lyime··on Uber to Seal $3.1B Deal to Buy Careem This Week

lyime··on Uber Drivers discuss giving 1-star ratings to passengers who don't tip
If drivers did that. Uber would surely and swiftly take that out of the UI.
lyime··on Some Details of My Personal Infrastructure
Hey thats like a pipe dream. Build a tool for yourself that you really like. Then build a company around it to make that tool better, so it gets better for you and everyone else who loves using it.
lyime··on Michael Dell Gets $12B Richer with Break from Public Eye
That’s you assuming he did it for the money.
lyime··on Ember v3.7 Released
React and Ember.js is not an apple to apple comparison. React is a UI library, Ember.js is a framework. Glimmer would be a better comparison.
lyime··on Can We Grow More Food on Less Land?
This won’t give you predictable yields. Though a combination of that idea and automation could work.
lyime··on Perhaps it is simpler to say that Intel was disrupted
If Apple does in fact move towards their own AX CPUS for PCs then might start with a hybrid approach before completely eliminating their dependency on the x86 instruction set.
