Well to be fair the cursors _really_ are distracting, what do you expect
luzojeda··on A journey into Kindle AI slop hell
Did NFTs and Bitcoin indirectly cause a bullish rally such as the one we are seeing on Nvidia? Genuine question here. Because that's what scares me the most, what will happen with Nvidia.
luzojeda··on A journey into Kindle AI slop hell
Same. Anecdata I know yadda yadda. But I don't know one single person that is hyped about _consuming_ art or any content generated by AI. Only people producing content with generative AI and expecting a financial benefit are the excited ones. And I might guess they are not that keen into consuming AI generated content as well. It's all about who is the sucker that pays for all the slop.

This felt like what an LLM, trained on hackernews data, would output if someone used as prompt "Give me the most stereotypical comment about sending nudes to woman that a hackernews user would write"

>Worried about climate change? In the 1980s it was nuclear war.

Yet they could afford _homes_. One of the most important things any human can have. A place to feel safe, call home, not be afraid month after month that your landlord will raise rent by 50% or 100% leaving you on the streets with all the stress that comes afterwards, etc.

Also we have that now as well. We are at the risk of a total war between China, Russia, USA, EU, India, etc. all with nuclear weapons. We have the worst of both worlds.

luzojeda··on Rents are rising faster than wages across the country
Don't think anyone in his position would be too keen on telling since it'd probably spoil the place.
luzojeda··on 30% of Children Ages 5-7 Are on TikTok
Just because it is in xkcd doesn't make the argument valid, correct and smart.

A book doesn't give you access to the content produced by billions of people instantly, neither music, refined apps where people that earn more than six figures work daily to ensure you spend more and more time on them. Neither does a TV.

They are not the same.

luzojeda··on Europe gives TikTok 24 hours to explain 'addictive and toxic' new app
You aren't entitled to what other people produce. If you don't like working you can live in the woods and not work a single day of your life again, but bear the consequences. No one owes you anything.
luzojeda··on Are flying cars finally here?
A helicopter can't go from flying to transport you in a highway. When people talk about flying cars they imagine that. Something that can fly and go around roads as a _car_ would normally do.

Paid classes of X never have been or ever will be third places. Because you have to pay a determinate amount to participate. One of the requisites for a place to be a _third_ place is you aren't obligated to spend money (or not a significant amount of it) to stay an amount of time where you can chat and make friends casually. That doesn't mean you can't make friends here but when we talk about third places we mean something else.

luzojeda··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
We didn't have a portable pocket computer with access to all the practically infinite multimedia refined (to be increasingly addictive) content either...

Sounds a bit cliché but those days we used internet to escape the real world. Now it's backwards. But the real world is getting worse. Those days with internet 1.0 that was a wonderful digital world for lots of us.

luzojeda··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
>My theory is that to meet a new person and have it be substantial, you basically need to spend a few hours, a few times per week, in the same space doing some arbitrarily interesting thing for a common reason, without being too eager but with a signaled sense of openness. You don't become a pro anything spending 30 min a week on it, and no valuable personal relationships come about that way either. That's how you met people in Uni, that's how you met people at work, you gotta branch off of those places and ya gotta keep it going gradually. If you don't live in a place that facilitates that, vote with your wallet and try to find a new one.

This is why for many of us the last place we made meaningful relationships was university: lots of time in a same place physically + common objectives + relativeley same age and interests = friendship.

The formula is simple but today the first component is what is most difficulty. Along with #3 I'd say. Many people recommend taking "classes" such as theater, ceramic, etc. but after doing all the hard work of finding a place near you, that you can pay if you find the average age is +- 15 your age it gets really desmotivating. There is nothing bad of going to classes with seniors but reality is you can't make true friendships with someone your grandfathers' age.

luzojeda··on Growth is a mind cancer
Maybe for you and even me. But not for the owners and workers of said company. If you were 42 years old, with 3 children to feed would you not mind if your company was dying and suddenly you had to start brushing up your resume, applying for new jobs which you don't even know if will be as good as what you have now?

What I mean is, it's absurd to expect companies not to behave the way they have always did.

luzojeda··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
It's a fine line between having some foreigners/tourists which can be really interesting fellows with realities completely different from you aaaaand being overrun by people that behave like locusts and just care about consuming as cheaply and quickly as possible no matter what (what happened to us in Buenos Aires). I don't think most people mind some foreigners in the places they frequent, the problem is the excess.
luzojeda··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
I live in Buenos Aires which became extremely attractive for expats, digital nomads and tourists in general last years due to the favorable exchange rate for first worlders. Considering this I started disliking _some_ tourists as you say. Those that go drunk everywhere, are loud, obnoxious, etc. I don't mind and are actually nice to those that are just chill and want to get to know the city.}

Thanks for the tips :) ! Will make sure to rent a bike while there.

luzojeda··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
Many thanks for the info. When you say some clubs that now the lines are too long, etc. Berghain would be an example? Or is has kept its "undeground" scene?

I'm travelling there for the first time, as a woman alone I wouldn't like to have nasty looks tbh (or even be yelled at as other user suggested), not want to bother, know to behave and just want to get to know the city along with other places in Europe.

Many good things for you guys have come at the cost of us third worlders for many decades, what do you expect me to say?
luzojeda··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
Genuine Q. Do berliner straight dislike any tourist no matter how they behave? I tend to go out in Buenos Aires where I live to more underground clubs and don't mind that there are a few tourists here and there. Im travelling to Berlin and was recommended Tresor, is it just a place for tourists?
luzojeda··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
I think just because we are cheaper.
luzojeda··on The Man in Seat 61
Same here. Travelling to Europe for the first time from South America and it's been a godsend. Naively thought that train travelling was simpler than it really is (which is completely understandable that's why I say I was being naive). Eurail community posters pointed me to that webpage and didn't need anything else.

Love the simple design too, a godsend nowadays.

luzojeda··on Ask HN: Does procrastination advice help you?
They help for a week or two and then I'm back to where I started. I'm starting therapy next week with one of the main goals try to solve this because it's been too many years already. It's getting worse and it is starting to generate a lot of distress. I would recommend trying that, there is a point where one can only do and control so much, if you tried many approaches it's time to look for external help.

The alternative was the economy minister largely responsible of how we got to where we are now. Minister of a president who basically said "you know what I'm out" in 2022 and basically gave the government to said minister.
