lurkinggrue··on Why Free Markets Make Fools of Us
Though many didn't see the seriously toxic credit default swaps going on and what exactly was going on with derivatives.

Many didn't know we had over leveraged the value of the entire world economy several times over.

lurkinggrue··on Show HN: A fireplace for Emacs
Amazing!

Have they ported a good text editor to Emacs yet?

lurkinggrue··on This Christmas, give the gift of a blameless life to someone you love
I've already purchased several indulgences from the church.

Fuck what Marten Luther had to say on this.... I'm all set!

lurkinggrue··on Toyota Unintended Acceleration and the Big Bowl of “Spaghetti” Code (2013)
Just dealing wit the entertainment messy of modern cars I already came to the conclusion that the car industry has no damn clue how to write software.

It's like the worst internal shit code you see in the in house tools at many companies where the moment it ran it was considered done enough.

lurkinggrue··on Show HN: LeadFinch – Find Anyone's Email Address
You need a "Delete my account" button. I just signed in to take a look and realized I needed an API to really test a few addresses and didn't want to bother.

lurkinggrue··on The Most Important Thing: Decline in poverty, illiteracy and disease
"Government can't do anything" meme tends to be pushed by organizations that actively want less government.

The sort of groups that listen to people like Grover Norquest who said: "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."

While there is a lot to be said about the idea of efficiency in government it isn't the same as wanting to burn our infrastructure down.

lurkinggrue··on The Inevitable return of Cobol
All I remember about RPG was hating it with a passion. When I was learning COBOL it started off on a Sperry Univac and the school transitioned to an IBM/36 so for a few months I got to code on the Sperry which at the time did feel a bit dated.

Then again my Amiga at the time had about as much ram as the IBM/36.

lurkinggrue··on The Inevitable return of Cobol
I learned COBOL in the late 80s but for the life of me can't remember much of it.

Is there anything like an IBM System 36 emulator out there?
