lurker19··on Seven Minutes in Ubuntu: A Mac user's first impressions
Ubuntu will never be as coherent and polished as Mac, and being #2 in this area is pointless.

Ubuntu should be supporting its users before they all leave, not trying to woo people who prefer something else.

lurker19··on The Latest Crime Wave: Sending Your Child to a Better School
Yeah so it turns out that the education consumer doesn't tend to spend the education dollar on quality education. Consider the current mess in privately-paid higher education.

Education is the vegetables on the dinner plate of life. I is a complicated long term investment to make good choices, but those choices have huge externalities. Parents make choices that affect their children (that is an externality) and those children grow up to affect society (another externality)

lurker19··on The Latest Crime Wave: Sending Your Child to a Better School
One major problem with vouchers is that they are susceptible to fraud. Current voucher and charter schools are not posting greater successes than public schools. Government services are at risk for innefficiency due to non-incentives, but government-funded private services are at similar risk due to perverse incentives.

For example, higher education IS currently on a loan-integrated voucher system, and it is common knowledge that private colleges are a money pit these days.

lurker19··on The Latest Crime Wave: Sending Your Child to a Better School
Merit-based access to education is an extremely debatabe proposition. Should a quality education be limited only to the already brilliant? Is it a better outcome to make a high-potential kid very well educated or a medium-potential kid basically educated? Remember that both become voters in a democracy.

West Wing had a nice conversation about this with regard to Affirmative Action beteen the black intern and the conservativx supreme court justice.

Mass production and magnification is a qualitative change.

lurker19··on Size is the best predictor of code quality
This is a hugely important overlooked point. When the measurements have a systematic bias, a product optimized to those measurements will have systemic problems. In this case: large, easy-to-understand classes that are excessive in number and completely fail to interoperate correctly.
lurker19··on Size is the best predictor of code quality
Yes, combination, which is factorial, which is yet larger than exponential.

Not sure what you mean by "geometric" in this context.

lurker19··on Size is the best predictor of code quality
Yes but the number of nodes is n, and an "interaction" among m nodes might not be decomposable to a chain of pairwise interactions, which raises the ceiling back to exponetial (actually factorial, which is worse).
lurker19··on Size is the best predictor of code quality
The composable programming evangelists (off-shoot from the movement to minimize mutable state) ague that the hifhest-quality software is always a small program that composed other small programs, recursively until all the desired functionality is accumulated.
lurker19··on Size is the best predictor of code quality
Smaller functions tend to be more reusable leading to fewer LoCc per codebase, which could overcome the bugs/LoC penalty.

Also, considering the date, this research could be influenced by the bug-prone-ness of parameter passing in C as a non-memory-managed language.

This is like the old meme "If you had invented Facebook, you would have invented Facebook."

There's no solution to "I like using Facebook but I don't like Facebook using me."

If you don't want Facebook to talk to your computer, don't let your computer talk to Facebook.

lurker19··on Richard Stallman: “Android Phones Do Not Respect Your Freedom”
Are you trying to discredit him by making fun of the way he organizes his reading to optimize his productive time and spotty Internet connectivity when traveling?

Instapaper, much beloved in these parts, is a fancy modern take on the same idea as RMS's web-to-email system.

lurker19··on Richard Stallman: “Android Phones Do Not Respect Your Freedom”
What has RMS written that is not real? He knows that some non-free software is compelling and profitable, but he argues that in the long run of is unstainable. And when you look at Lion and Metro and Google Apps' only half-baked Data Liberation Front and compare to what RMS wrote 20 years ago, it is clear he is very much in the real world, unfortunately.

Is Android the least evil? Probably. But it is still not free. And RMS doesn't say you mustn't Android and whatever else; he just days that you shouldn't if you want to protect and promote software freedom, and he is a living model of an example free software lifestyle, for better or worse.

Mr Case is not the famous Magic guy from the OKCupid article. Mr Case was just trying to impress you by sayingg he is like the Magic guy. The actual Magic guy did a AMA on Reddit is is a much more pleasant and well-adjusted fellow than Mr Case.

It is just one poorly written line in a poorly written article.

lurker19··on iOS is anti-Unix and anti-programmer
That's not part of ios, that is a library. I can't add that to someone else's app on the device. Apple should integrate it into iOS.

The user of the device should be able to compose apps, not only cooperating app writers.

lurker19··on Ubuntu Unity Dev Team AMA
It is a forward looking decision. If the Ubuntu team is committed to making Ubuntu more confusing to use and introducing new bugs and breaking existing features and ignoring old bugs, it is better to jump over to a platform that issue heading in a better direction. It is sad that no major dev team is working on building a usable powerful system. It is a necessary consequence o the mainstreamization of computing, though. Every year power users are a smaller fraction of the user base and therefore more relatively expensive to support.
