lsdafjklsd··on In Busy Silicon Valley, Protein Powder Is in Demand
I'm pretty obese at 275lbs, and binging on food is my drug of choice. Soylent has been invaluable in my addiction management. Because food is something you can't quit cold turkey, I have to try and focus on eating for nutrition instead of emotional support. Soylent allows me to get nutrition fast and in a non-food manner when my blood sugar is low and I can't reliably make a sensible food choice.

I drink 500 calories and 42 grams of protein upon waking, and found that it increases my ability to fight urges to binge throughout the day. I'll often have another 500 calorie shot of Soylent around 4 o'clock so in a couple of hours when I have to decide on real dinner food, I'm in a good place to eat sensibly. I'm very excited at the trend of meal replacements, it's an indispensable tool in managing my addiction and I'm down 20lbs since January just as a side effect.

lsdafjklsd··on Microsoft is killing off the Internet Explorer brand
What's the word with Firefox performance? My company's app is critically slow in JUST Firefox. It's an Ember app, but we use D3 and Immutable.js. We aren't doing anything weird AFAIK
lsdafjklsd··on Use ReactJS to Build Native Apps
Doing everything is a side effect of the architecture.

"The virtual dom is an implementation detail of React.js. React Native demonstrates that many rendering contexts are possible."

This was kind of the exciting point all along :). DOM just happens to be the output of a function that people are most interested in at the moment. but people have been talking about using it with canvas and other stuff, too. It's a generally-useful way to map functional data to render-trees.

lsdafjklsd··on Netflix Likes React
They were using Ember at one point yea? I think I recall them contracting a pretty core Ember member, maybe ebryn, to work on a project.
lsdafjklsd··on Riot – A React-like, 2.5K user interface library
After using ember's router and react-router, I can't do client side routing with a router like this (or backbone's, or anything that is sinatra like). The layout management part of nested routes is crucial and way too hard to do with something as minimal as this.

That said, great work on this library! I'm impressed with how much functionality you guys have in such a small package.

lsdafjklsd··on Front End Developer – Interview Questions
I agree, but I'll say that it wasn't until I started writing non-ember application code (switching to react + immutable.js + pure functions) that I needed things like call / apply / bind on the regular. So writing framework code can really insulate you from needing these things, not implying that that's a bad thing, but personally writing regular javascript has been a breathe of fresh air.
lsdafjklsd··on Pixie: A small fast, native lisp
Neat project, although I am struggling with getting it working. Looking forward to installation instructions.
lsdafjklsd··on CSS: It was twenty years ago today
Yea, definitely didn't mean to sound like that. Edited my original post.
lsdafjklsd··on CSS: It was twenty years ago today
CSS is problematic in every project I've been on. It takes a lot of effort to stay disciplined and not just throw stuff in a class namespace that shouldn't be there. This article [1] by Nicholas Gallagher sums up how I feel after trying my damnedest to write maintainable CSS in my applications. I'm now using the Suit CSS [2] preprocessor to enforce strict guidelines to our app's CSS. It's working well so far.

lsdafjklsd··on GitHub Student Developer Pack
Screenhero, the most impressive bit of software I've used since licecap. So sad my company didn't subscribe after the free ride ended. Sadly stuck with hip chat and g hangouts.
lsdafjklsd··on Choosing the Right JavaScript Framework
I would absolutely not use Backbone for anything view related anymore. React.js is a much better choice, even for just enabling small islands of richness.
lsdafjklsd··on Show HN: Use email subject lines to save personal stats and chart them
Damn, this is clever. Nice job!
lsdafjklsd··on Ask HN: Ideas for toy projects to build as an educational exercise?
Great suggestions, thanks :)

I have 0 systems programming know how, so I don't even know anything outside of an irc bot to tackle.

lsdafjklsd··on [dead]
Dude, you're projecting your own insecurities onto everyone else. If you think you're at a stage where you've figured out how to live a meaningful life, you're haven't.

I was particularly struck by this "I hope you didn’t work a safe job, at a safe company, in a safe industry for your entire life. I hope you weren’t content chipping away at your 401k day after day, year after year."

"Hi, I'm an individual who didn't struggle financially in life, my job afforded me the luxury of traveling and engaging in activities that make me happy." To me, that's it. If you can do that, plus have your health and collection of interests that keep your mind entertained, you did it. Life is very difficult for the majority of people. Surviving the best you can, enjoying what's out there, doing things that make you happy, is all you can do.

lsdafjklsd··on A Gentle Introduction to Monad Transformers – or, Values as Exceptions
Meh, I don't know or use Haskell and I'm interested in this stuff. I'm a javascript programmer introduced to these concepts via [1]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3svKOdZijA and https://github.com/CrossEye/ramda. Programming in a point free style in javascript is great!

lsdafjklsd··on Keep it Simple – A Guide to Minimalist Photography
Minimalism != Simple

This is a highly stylistic aesthetic, and the 'technique' seems gimicky. For better photographs, learn the basics of compositions and how color / size influence weight in a picture.

Two hours with this book and you will be most of the way there! http://www.amazon.com/Design-Basics-Index-Jim-Krause/dp/1581...

lsdafjklsd··on Show HN: Dollar and Cent – A functional tool belt for Swift
Not so much functional as just useful methods for working with arrays / maps. It would be functional to include a compose method... also currying is going to be painful because of how the arguments are structured (data first).
lsdafjklsd··on The Curse of Smart People
I was always amazed at how many people would paint the eyes on a portrait with white, when the eyes are one of the darkest areas on the face.
lsdafjklsd··on Ki – A lisp for your JavaScript
Trying to find ways to integrate react / om / clojurescript into my Ember app and this is perfect. Thank you!
lsdafjklsd··on Scrivere – A simplistic text editor
When I switched to javascript there was no syntax highlighting. I like the aesthetic of it though!
lsdafjklsd··on Removing User Interface Complexity, or Why React is Awesome
Looking forward to that. I'm a JS dev who learned Clojure through Clojurescript (and D.Nolen's blog). In trying to entice my colleagues to try it, the JVM bit seems to be a bit of a barrier... but the LightTable development loop blows them away.
lsdafjklsd··on A free cookbook for people living on $4/day
I'm vegan and I eat super cheap. Lentils / black beans in a soup or burrito gets you very far. My luxury meal items are fresh bread or tortillas.

Bah, living the dream. Have you figured out how to make exceptional neapolitan pies yet? I'm a regular at Paulie Gee's and would love to be able to make pizza like that.

lsdafjklsd··on React: Finally, a great server/client web stack
I come from an Ember.js background and its router / nested layout management is the best I have used. I like react, and have been diving into OM as well in my free time, but I'm not sure of the best way to approach routing / page transitions.

When I start an app, I do not think from the bottom up, which is the react way. I want to start with the login page and redirects, or get the major page transitions down. I'll be interested in seeing how you approach that.
