You can easily put a hundred GB or two into a SQLite database

If the cars aren’t real, why does time need to be real? Can’t the people paid to run the race pause/rewind so people don’t suffer through bugs?

Epitaph, by Max Kreminski.

It's a haunting look at the Fermi Paradox of "so where is everyone else in the universe".

lsb··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
I have just made a little machine learning model to help me go through the 27k photos from my ten years of cell phone cameras (should this go up on the wall? y/n), and am using a Jupyter notebook for the tick tock of data labeling, image classification, data labeling the most ambiguous, reclassification, etc. Hope to write up soon

The url is OneNDA and the title typed here is OneDNA, perhaps this bodes poorly for how memorable/repeatable the name is.
lsb··on SQLite in a PWA (Anita) with FileSystemAccessAPI
That is literally one of the ways that SQLite does its journalled commit
lsb··on SQLite in a PWA (Anita) with FileSystemAccessAPI
Uh, one of the major selling points of a database like SQLite is that it writes out its contents as they get updated, and it seems like this is bulk overwriting the file (which could be dangerous if there's a power loss during writing)

lsb··on XUAN-Bike: Self-riding, riderless bike
Self-driving bicycles (for last-mile deliveries) can be _much less precise_ than cars: 10mph is slow enough for both parties to have a lot of time to react, and if 50lbs of bicycle going at 10mph hits a pedestrian (god forbid) the impact might not even knock you down.
lsb··on Why we should end the data economy
You can't opt out of cities' car culture by not driving: the rest of the city is all there all the time. You can't opt out of a data economy by your individual isolated action: the rest of the economy is vacuuming up similar people's data all the time.

It's amazing to see how people come together in times of duress, and how people understand their relative responsibilities to each other when they know they have no one else but each other.

(It's also a mixed bag. I'm sure, if the plane could have landed, she would rather have taken a more leisurely steam.)

lsb··on WebContainers: Run Node.js natively in the browser
Except for figuring out Pytorch's blas, the rest should be pretty straightforward to use CPU-only, I'd love to use that to (even pay to) compile some side projects to wasm apps in the browser :)

> We are working on CheerpX, but it’s not yet available generally. If you are curious and want to know more, stay tuned, or get in touch!

How close is CheerpX to getting (for example) an app that uses a PyTorch model running in the browser? :)

lsb··on Replacing Elasticsearch with Rust and SQLite (2017)
I wonder how effective this would be with the SQLite with a new virtual file system fetching pages via XHR that someone posted last month. Then you would be able to do full text search on a huge database only sending a few KB per search

lsb··on On the New Architecture of Location-Based Services [pdf]
If the device is sending the 3 closest beacons up to a server, for ads nearby, then the server can know what region a device is, wherein those beacons are the three closest, and no others, and the beacon operators can increase beacon frequency as much as needed to increase granularity.

It's unclear the trust model that makes this more valuable than sending the lat/lng/accuracy from the GPS.

The New York Post is a disreputable Murdoch newspaper, and does not justify the extraordinary claims with extraordinary evidence. I couldn't use the Post in high school newspaper citations.
