lpellis··on Farewell, Python 3.5
I didn't even know about | for dict merges, that's pretty cool. But I feel the same, even in my private code I'm a bit hesitant to use :=, and any pip installable packages I almost feel obligated to write in more compatible ways. Not sure what the solution is really.
lpellis··on Ask HN: Side-project that became your full-time job?
I am almost to the point where https://pagewatch.dev covers its expenses, but getting any traction if you do not already have an audience is super hard. It is fun working on something that is your own though.
lpellis··on Experiment with Lifetime Subscription and made $20k in two days
That's very motivating, things seem to alway go very slow then fast. I thought about adding a lifetime plan too when I launched on ProductHunt, but it is a bit scary when you are not 100% sure of your pricing structure. Might end up having to support customers for years and cost more than expected. I guess your product has been long enough now that you know the costs.
lpellis··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
That 'copy video at current time' option wasnt available until the livestream ended though. I should have tried manually adding it.
lpellis··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
Just did a minute ago, it worked! 6:57 in the the timestamp on the top right, I dont think I can link to a time in a live youtube video
lpellis··on A super quick rundown on SEO
If you host your SPA on Netlify for example you can enable prerendering with just a checkbox, that way they will automatically serve the static content to Google. (as rendered in a browser)
lpellis··on Show HN: Applied all feedback on our landing page
You missed a few minor spelling issues, and some issues on an iPad. https://app.pagewatch.dev/ece9a1806742a1d9c7c99839078f3becfc... Looks good though, good luck :)
lpellis··on Show HN: I made a neural text to speech website as my pandemic side project
I'd love to read that if you ever put it together!

How many hours of audio did it need to train one of the voices?

lpellis··on Show HN: I made a neural text to speech website as my pandemic side project
This looks really impressive, do you have any writeup on how you coded all of it?
lpellis··on Show HN: Spending GCloud for startups credits on a free demo
Doesnt seem to work with webgl, I tried with some old project of mine: https://coinminingstats.com/globe

Its pretty responsive otherwise though, really cool

lpellis··on Scrapinghub/Scrapyrt: Scrapy Realtime
I'm using scrapinghub extensively for https://pagewatch.dev , is this project something you can use as a self-hosted replacement? Its not very clear how it works, what does the Realtime mean?
lpellis··on Show HN: 3D Book Image CSS Generator
Do you know the number of pages for each book? Then you could adjust the thickness automatically :)
lpellis··on Show HN: 3D Book Image CSS Generator
Thats pretty cool, things go a bit crazy when you move the width too far right.
lpellis··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Does this mean they can also login to any account connected with OATH. Many sites allow Twitter auth.
lpellis··on Dealing with Insomnia
I'm on the same schedule you were (working till sunrize), but I dont have a family or other obligations yet. If you were in my position do you still think its worth it to try and change to a more regular cycle? I really enjoy my nights.

On the topic of noise, there is one thing I wish could be more recognized as a nuisance, and that is the damn leaf blowers. Especially now that everyone is forced to work from home, every day around here for a couple of hours you are subjected to that.

lpellis··on ExSaaSperated: A blog about the struggle to start a sustainable SaaS
I find it is hard to start an online company, especially if you do not already have a large network. What happens is you build something, and then.. nothing. I sometimes wonder just what percentage is luck, reaching that right person at the right time. (I launched my product on producthunt today so I'm very aware of the need for an audience )
lpellis··on A REST View of GraphQL
Traffic for my service is too low to say for sure yet, but the hasura docs seems to indicate that it could be quite scalable: https://github.com/hasura/graphql-engine/blob/master/archite...
lpellis··on A REST View of GraphQL
True, but then I'm using the subscriptions model that Hasura provides, so in my case the UI update is actually automatic, its just initiated by Postgres triggers instead of cache (so a bit slower, but still fast enough)
lpellis··on A REST View of GraphQL
I've used GraphQL and Hasura extensively for my project (https://pagewatch.dev) and it has been a huge timesaver to get a realtime service up and running. BUT, I'm still using REST for mutations (The POST/PUT part really). At least for my use case I find that almost every time you are modifying data there is some other component also involved (eg starting a background task), so it might as well be a REST server endpoint. (Also I find the mutations language of GraphQL is really the weakest/hardest to really understand part)
lpellis··on Thank HN: My startup was born here and is now 10 years old
Congrats! It always amazes me that there are still big/old players in a field that I thought I was familiar with.. I have seen many A/B testing tools but somehow never yours, I must be living in a different Google bubble. Guess that shows that there is always room for more players.
lpellis··on Bookmarklets I Use
I also wrote about a few I find useful, biggest one is 'Sane Color', it changes the text to be black on white. (Some sites have very hard to read colors, and sometimes I prefer light mode over dark) https://loftie.com/post/3-useful-bookmarklets-i-use-almost-d...
lpellis··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
I've only had to update it two times to fix bugs with android upgrades,so all in all not too bad. Google did once randomly pulled my app without warning (just an email after they pulled it) for violating some terms, without stating what terms. I couldnt get any useful feedback, eventually I just bumped the version number and rewrote the description, that got met back on the store. But it did make me very weary of building anything their platform.
lpellis··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
I built an Android app a few years back as a project to learn native Android coding, its been making around $300/month from sales/adsense. Its fun to read and reply to reviews every now and then. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lpellis.se...
lpellis··on Show HN: Oya.to A SaaS that improves your React/SPA/website SEO and performance
That would be quite ironic :) I dont see it though, would you mind pointing it out? Are you talking about spellling, because that one is intentional (and even underlined) to show an example.
lpellis··on Show HN: Oya.to A SaaS that improves your React/SPA/website SEO and performance
This looks quite impressive, how does it work with dynamic (per user) content? If I have such a vue site for example, do I have to modify anything to get it to work? The pricing mentions unlimited bandwidth, but limited requests. what counts as a request?

I'm actually running a service that does lighthouse checks (amongst other things) so nice to see more people focussing on making things faster. You can see the report for your site here, there are some minor issues it found: https://app.pagewatch.dev/b326ab115e9f00bac779d9851d4687a3fa...

lpellis··on Show HN: Custom Tooltip Generator on Vue.js
Looks quite nice, its a bit confusing on your site though that the tooltip just always displays, I think you should add a toggle so it works as a tooltip there also :)
lpellis··on Show HN: An easy and simple landing page builder
Your signup page does not show at all on an iPad. (I made a tool to find these kinds of errors, you can see the results here: https://app.pagewatch.dev/8c381890f2e599beec475be2a3ac19a030... )
lpellis··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
Only if you take away the middle lens, not the third.

Here's what I would have thought happens: After the first lens, you get polarized light, 90deg offset from the last lens, so no light passes. Then you introduce a 3rd lens in the middle, 45deg offset. This could alter the polarization (maybe it widens the band, or introduce some greater variance, shifts it who knows), and this is why now some light will pass through number 3. No need to create any light

lpellis··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
I have seen the example with the polarized lenses in a few places, but they dont explain why (imo) the simplest explanation does not apply. Namely that the lens itself might disturb the phase of the light, which would then mean it can pass through the next lens.
lpellis··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
Bell's theorem. It somehow proves that quantum physics is incompatible with local hidden variables, but I could never see an understandable explanation (for me at least) of just how it works.
