I do feel like the industry has taken a nosedive quality wise over covid in particular. Lots of new people only in tech for the money, no deep idea about computers.

But I know stories like yours from a decade past as well. A tale old as time, but compounding in recent years - IMHO.

Yeah, most programmers are not curious hackers anymore. They are 9-5 white collar workers with hobbies far outside of programming, systems, hardware, etc. It shows very much as soon as you meet one of them. But, like you said, this is true of any industry.

Oh, and pointy jab: these folks are also, in my opinion/experience, the most eager to vibecode shit. Make of that what you will.

lpcvoid··on Android’s new sideload settings will carry over to new devices
Apple will enshittify at some point. The only long term way to go is open source.
lpcvoid··on Say No to Palantir in Europe
And I am very happy about that superpower. Regulation is a very good thing, specially when wielded against US big tech.
lpcvoid··on Show HN: Sheet Ninja – Google Sheets as a CRUD Back End for Vibe Coders
The world needs less vibe coded slop, not more
lpcvoid··on LinkedIn uses 2.4 GB RAM across two tabs
Imagine the MBA that had this idea. This is peak, distilled Microslop engineering right there.
lpcvoid··on Overestimation of microplastics potentially caused by scientists' gloves
Where do I find this info?
lpcvoid··on Android’s new sideload settings will carry over to new devices
I find it unacceptable, and they will not keep it like this. They will boil the frog slowly, as usual.
lpcvoid··on Android’s new sideload settings will carry over to new devices
Yeah. I had to remove malware from family phones because they installed the wrong "QR Code Scanner" out of the trillions of copies on the play store, which contained malware that somehow replaced the launcher on a Samsung phone and then showed ads all over the place. The Play store is fucking malware, Google services are malware, and the family member now uses a Pixel 9a with GrapheneOS which makes normie phone usage riskless and clean again. Fuck Google for Gaslighting us all with this Sideload change.
lpcvoid··on A laser-based process that enables adhesive-free paper packaging
Not if the produced adhesive is free of hydrocarbons, which it is.
lpcvoid··on Folk are getting dangerously attached to AI that always tells them they're right
You could do the sane thing and not use AI, at all. That does the trick pretty well.
lpcvoid··on Hold on to Your Hardware
Ai isn't means to creation. AI is a scam on the whole of humanity, big tech stole humanities output in form of books, research and media, and are now selling access to the slop generator.

I have created things long, long, long before AI existed, and intend on continuing to do so, without AI.

lpcvoid··on Arm AGI CPU
AGI wouldn't lie to me every chance it got. Current LLMs are just slop generators, nothing more.
lpcvoid··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
Yes, and France currently has a huge problem with keeping their plants online in the summer when it's too warm. And building new plants is outrageously expensive, see Hinkley Point C. Oh, ans you still need to import fission material, so you're dependent again on other countries. Nuclear was good in the 70s, now it's beaten thoroughly by renewables.
lpcvoid··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
Yepp. Grid defection is a trend all across the world right now in sunny climates. I live in Germany and can unfortunately not do this, but if I had thr sun hours of California, you can bet I'd build 300kWh of LiFePO4 and as much solar as my roof allows, and cancel all my expensive contracts.
lpcvoid··on LG's new 1Hz display is the secret behind a new laptop's battery life
Firefox Android + ublock origin. There's ads on the internet? Wouldn't know.
lpcvoid··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
And then there's me, hoping they don't realize that Windows is in danger. The world needs less Microslop.
lpcvoid··on Hold on to Your Hardware
I don't agree that we are being left behind with regards to AI, I believe it's simply not worth participating in. I hope it all comes crashing down.

Try Quickweather (with OpenMeteo) if you're on Android. I love it.

The only subscription I have is Spotify, since there's no easy way that I know of to get the discoverability of music in a way that Spotify allows it.

For the rest: I agree with you.

> Open source efforts need to give up on local AI and embrace cloud compute.

Oh god no, please not more slop, you're already consuming over 1 percent of human energy output, could you, like, chill a bit?

lpcvoid··on Hold on to Your Hardware
I rarely doge a chance to shit on Microslop and its horrible products, but you don't use a browser? In fact, running all that junk in a single chromium instance is quite a memory saver compared to individual electron applications.
lpcvoid··on End of "Chat Control": EU parliament stops mass surveillance
Great comment, thank you. I know that I could simply upvote, but this deserved more.
lpcvoid··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
Orban is an evil politician, and Fidez is an evil party.
lpcvoid··on Thoughts on Slowing the Fuck Down
That's a mighty high horse you are riding there
lpcvoid··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
They == the lizard people, I assume?
lpcvoid··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
So then explain to me where I wrote misinformation?
lpcvoid··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
AI is one of the causes that climate change is accelerating, which is another in a long list of reasons to hate it.
lpcvoid··on Windows native app development is a mess
Yes, as is the VCL that Delphi ships, along with the Lazarus component library which bases on Qt or GTK on Linux, and Win32 on Windows. It's the same sort of layer.
lpcvoid··on Windows native app development is a mess
Lazarus is crazy good, as is Delphi, if you can afford it. wxWidgets is also nice, without the licensing weirdness that is Qt.
