low_tech_punk··on Show HN: Working on a Zero-Knowledge Daily Journaling App
On a marketing tangent, I wish the security practitioners had names better than "zero-knowledge" and "trustless". To an average person, they really make the system sound dumb and dubious despite them being beneficial.

Curious what alternative names people have?

low_tech_punk··on Nim and Go programs identified by Carbon Black as malware on Windows
You can always make the "err on the safe side" argument for security related practice. But at least provide transparent and responsive communication channels for legitimate authors to dispute a flagging. Right now the whole malware detection thing is a blackbox that makes software authors feel powerless. I can only imagine AI products making this even worse.
low_tech_punk··on FYI: LLVM-project repo has exceeded GitHub upload size limit (2022)
On a philosophical note, git, being a distributed source control system has no limits to repo sizing, but github, being is a centralized "hub" suffers scaling problems. It's fascinating to watch these tradeoffs play out. Maybe, IPFS would come to the rescue one day.
low_tech_punk··on Swift Achieved Dynamic Linking Where Rust Couldn't (2019)
Could someone help explain the difference between Rust ARC (Atomically Reference Counted) vs. Switch ARC (Automatic Reference Counting)?

Do the language designers intentionally chosen the same acronym to confuse us?

low_tech_punk··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
Thanks for this explanation. I finally got the point :)

low_tech_punk··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
My personal nightmare is Fn, FnMut, and FnOnce. I always got them in the opposite order as I intended.
low_tech_punk··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
Is this a sarcasm piece from the author? The way the article ends (by throwing away more and more features from Rust) makes me wonder how sincere the beginning was.
low_tech_punk··on Replacing arrow keys with a front touch panel?
The placement seems ergonomic, but the lack of rapid keypress handling is a non-starter for me.
low_tech_punk··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Interesting insight from Darwinism point of view!

If we have solved the public health problems, does it make Monogamy an empty construct? Or there are other social/economical/biological factors that hold it in place?

low_tech_punk··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Perel's argument was the inverse: people who failed their marriage because they are holding too tight on the monogamy ideal, as they expect everything from a single partner who cannot provide everything. Well, I'm not sure what to think of that. I'm just quoting her theory and I feel it's relevant in this discourse.
low_tech_punk··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
If people consider marriage as a contract of exchange, then it is already a form of legalized prostitution. Monogamy might be a bigger underlying problem.

Esther Perel's Mating in Captivity in a good read on this topic.

low_tech_punk··on IBM to cut about 3,900 workers while still hiring in ‘higher growth’ areas
Do people know if IBM Quantum is one of those `higher growth` areas? Asking for a friend who is worried about getting laid off from the Microsoft Azure Quantum team.
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: Turning books into chatbots with GPT-3
Could you share your ML architecture? Curious if you did it via fine-tuning or other tricks. It is amazing.
low_tech_punk··on Show HN: Turning books into chatbots with GPT-3
Are there ways to make the output quote any relevant sentences from book? I just want to verify whether there is hallucination.
low_tech_punk··on Tell HN: Thank you for being fast, almost ad-free and text-only

low_tech_punk··on Casio-F-91W die-shot
From the business/design/technology POV, why is this watch so successful and so iconic?
low_tech_punk··on Second Life on GitHub
This brought me nostalgia.

I tried SL in 2011. I was able to get some avatar add-ons for free. My favorite add-on was a Tux (Linux mascot) doll. Due to poor 3D graphics, the doll looked like its semi-detached to my avatar and moves with my avatar without any animation. It was ridiculously irrelevant, but I enjoyed the game.

Curious if anyone else had that same add-on.

Any self-hosted sync options? i.e. Run my own service in docker container, and provide my own database, be it a blob storage like S3, R2, Backblaze or SQLite?
low_tech_punk··on Boom takes the wraps off its supersonic Symphony engine design
Interesting play on names. A Symphony sounds like the boomed up version of Concorde.
low_tech_punk··on Lesser-known JavaScript APIs
My personal favorite is the Intl.Segmenter

It's a basic tokenizer you can use for NLP pre-processing.
