lovich··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Some of the early backrooms lore and levels were based on noclipping in furniture stores or even IKEA directly since it was all fan made stuff not caring about the legal ramifications.

I tried to find a link but it’s impossible now that backrooms is a popular IP

And having been in an empty IKEA, it definitely had that liminal feel

Oh, I thought the main difference was I wasn’t given outsized rewards, wealth beyond imagination, power over society, and most importantly.

I actually have consequences when I make promises and fail them.

I don’t get to keep claiming full self driving will be done next year for a decade and then move on to the Nasdaq changing its rules to get my next company fast tracked into everyone’s 401ks.

I don’t get to commit felony after felony and then do infinite appeals to never pay my fines and move into the White House.

You are making a ridiculous comparison but I guess keep defending the people fucking us all over if you want.

lovich··on Instagram's head says engagement falls by half without the algorithm
New Reddit is literally unusable for me. And I mean actually literal.

Anytime an image is opened in new Reddit I have a 50% chance of not being able to back out of the page without it immediately redirecting back to the image and then locking the whole tab. I’m not even able to enter a different site into the url bar, I have to kill the tab and open a new one.

Even logged in old.reddit is worse than logged out as it recalculates the post order after hitting back from a post instead of just giving me the same fucking page I was on.

I don’t know what Reddit plan is, or their business model going forward if users can’t actually use it.

Although I did notice today they’ve added games so I guess they might be going for ad revenue on that like news sites have done in recent years.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Give me enough guano, charcoal, sulphur, steel, and flint and I can cobble together carpet bombing from my kitchen without ever having to go up the tech tree past a few hundred years ago.

Hell Hamas themselves under heavy sanctions have shown they have the technology, they merely lack the surfeit of resources to implement it.

This isn’t me arguing with you, I’m just flabbergasted that someone could say with a straight face that Israel doesn’t have the technology to carpet bomb.

I want us to decrease or end our alliance with Israel for political reasons related to how their government has interacted with ours(the US) but I am constantly surprised by these people who honestly think that Israel wouldn’t collapse the moment US support ended, like they didn’t fight several existential wars and win previous to our support.

lovich··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
The elite broke trust.

No one made people like Sam Altman into a compulsive liar. No one made Musk call a service full self driving, and then make it return liability to the user the second it decides an accident is about to happen.

Stop removing agency from the people making the top level decisions and reaping all the rewards.

Would you claim that someone who took 5 shots in a row and drove home wasn’t responsible for an accident because the car was what physically did the damage?

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Private financial support doesn’t count, that’s private actors.

I’ll accept Starlink as US support despite their back and forth on supporting Russia, because they are a large corporation requiring on government assent the same way Wildberries is for Russia.

The indirect one you’ll have to sell me on as support. We’re selling shit, and like to make money. Someone buying our shit to give to Ukraine doesn’t count as support or antagonistic to me but as a neutral position.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
> Israelis can't carpet bomb. They don't have the tech.

What? I’m not even responding to the rest if this is how you open up.

Carpet bombing is so low tech I can’t imagine a country in the modern age that couldn’t create the technology even if they couldn’t afford actually deploying it. It’s a matter of logistics and having enough bombs.

It’s literally just dropping a fuck ton of dumb bombs on an area to “carpet” it, unless we’re talking past each other and you were referring to something else.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
It is when there’s an existential threat which, agree with Israel’s government or not, they believe the neighboring Islamic factions are.

I’m not claiming it would be easy but it’s definitely not an amount that losing would end the war overnight, which was the original claim I responded to

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
And they can redirect resources to the war if we removed it.

If anything, removal of our support probably leads to the use of dumber less targeted weapons like carpet bombing or good ole white phosphorus that they’ve already demonstrated use of in past conflicts.

If we were giving them 30+% of their gdp then yea, dropping that probably stops the conflict. 2% is just a budget reshuffle.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Israel vs Palestine is not a major conflict, especially given the one sided nature of the fight.

Israel + US vs Iran is a majorish conflict but the US is directly a belligerent in that one.

> also, arguably, the half-century of creating, establishing, funding, and build-up of NATO largely supersedes the point that Trump cut spending there temporarily. that all came from American coffers and the current conflict there is a long hangover from that

Glossing over the Russian propaganda points accusing a defensive pact as a reason for starting a war, that still means that the conflict “ could be over tomorrow” is incorrect even if the US ended all support today.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
I don’t know why so many people take it as a given that Israel only exists because of America.

They used to be aligned with the USSR and we did a lot of work to peel them off into our own domain. They also have their own military industrial complex and are perfectly capable of manufacturing the weapons they need domestically.

They also have nukes.

lovich··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
If you’re referring to Ukraine as one of the two, we already heavily reduced our support under Trump and there is no chance in hell that removing the leftover support causes Ukraine to capitulate by tomorrows, especially after recent territory gains and destruction of Russian logistical supply lines with Wildberries and their refinery infrastructure.

Also if the other is Iran, lol at “stopped supporting respective belligerents” as if the US itself was not one of the major belligerents.

lovich··on One resignation turned the embers of AI fear into a wildfire
The only improvement I’ve seen is speed of development, but it’s come at the cost of quality. Hence pretty much every single piece of software a consumer uses becoming significantly worse over the past two years.

It’s especially worsened by every leader doing their damndest to force something related to AI into their workflows and products, regardlesss of if it’s a good fit, lest their own leaders or investors decide they are dinosaurs who need to be replaced.

lovich··on One resignation turned the embers of AI fear into a wildfire
He’s probably referencing effective accelerationism or something associated with the TESCREAL cloud of beliefs

Edit: saw the other responses. I don’t think effective altruism was the right answer. Effective accelerationism, which came out of effective altruism, has all the ideas about human extinction and needing to develop AGI at all costs to save the species insanity.

And then in your next comment

> Oh no, I don't need evidence…

You are being contradictory

lovich··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
If the interview was specifically about doing it manually that’s one thing.

I called them schizophrenic because the companies I’ve interviewed with seem like they desperately want to be on the AI bandwagon and want you to demonstrate the ability to effectively use AI, but they don’t currently know how to evaluate that and panic and default back to their old heuristics.

It is very difficult in 45-50 minutes to complete a task when the criteria change partway through.

lovich··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
Those guidelines were written before bots could pass the Turing test and before nation states set up active disinformation groups that don’t even set out to push a narrative, but to just push every side of divisive topics just to spread division.

You can follow them if you want, but I find it hopelessly naive to trust brand new accounts whose first topics they comment on are touchy ones.

lovich··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
This is hacker news. Not Reddit.

You can comment about anything here and build credibility.

Just don’t start on the most divisive topics.

lovich··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
It’s the era of ai bots and coördinated agitprop from nation states.

Spend some time building your reputation before arguing for divisive topics or be ignored.

Consider it a mechanical Turk but for social trust.

lovich··on GamersNexus and LG: Or why rooting your TV is a bad idea
> Now, what he’s showing can be pretty scary. I wouldn’t want any attacker to be able to record me without knowing. But it’s important to remember the context here: earlier in the video, Wendell rooted the TV. He has full access to everything on it. To run those commands and programs, he had to log into WebOS via SSH and run them on the device. He didn't show remoting calling those commands, nor was this done on an unmodified device.

> If you root or jailbreak your devices, you've, by their very nature, broken their security. If he can demonstrate someone remotely jailbreaking your TV, or flipping on those settings without you knowing or doing anything to your TV, that would be a far more damning issue, in my view.

What is this authors point?

LG doesn’t need a root exploit to get this info because they made the fucking thing.

I read the article and then grepped for “Texas” to see if I missed it. The author never mentions the fact that this data collection was only found out initially because of a Texas government lawsuit that LG settled on by agreeing to give “informed consent” to users about data collection and then the warnings started popping up in unexpected places.

Is the author arguing that jailbreaking your device to find out what the manufacturer can do to gather data on you is dangerous because I don’t know, questioning your corporate overlords is bad or something?

We didn’t need to see resignations because they were fired when the numbers weren’t good, in his opinion, previously.[1]

I get that the king does multiple things per day that used to be admin ending but we shouldn’t forget his machinations that are related to the topic at hand.

The data probably isn’t 100% false but it also definitely as trustworthy as it was a year and a half ago.

lovich··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
AI has completely broken interviewing as well. The asks I am getting in the few interviews I can achieve are schizophrenic.

They have pretty uniformly wanted me to demonstrate using AI but then freak out and interrogate me for every prompt and then want me to demonstrate I can do the task by hand. And that’s only after getting through the AI run filtering that gives a different score everytime your unchanged resume is run through the model.

It’s dark times for employment currently unless you’ve got a rare nepotism path.

Not ridiculously cheap, but probably within the realm of most people on this forums budget if they want to get into it.

Another plus side of the lab grown gems is that they are usually uniform in quality. Natural stones can have a lot of variance in hardness and cracks that make them need a more nuanced hand on.

If anyone running across this comment thread gets interested, the material you are looking for is "lab grown ${gemstone you care about} rough"

Assume I am ignorant to the context of this conversation if need be. What were you referencing when you made your claim to needing evidence?

lovich··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Its not gonna be just diamonds, pretty much every gemstone is subject to the lab grown stuff.

Im into gem cutting as a hobby so its been great for me to find stuff like these cheap ruby roughs[1] but yea, its gonna fuck up anyone selling the natural stuff.
