lovich··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
> i.e. Reprap

Nah, we just went with Bambu. No shade to the reprap community but my enjoyment of the hobby is with the printing of models, not tinkering with my machine constantly.

The amount of failed builds I got with the prusa xl due to its tool changer meant it was the last prusa my household will ever get

lovich··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Is there any allegations of price fixing in this case? The demand just skyrocketed. Other than legislation like the defense act in the US I don’t know of any governments that have jurisdiction over these ram makers that mandate companies produce more of a product.

Especially not for consumer goods.

lovich··on Human brain is two separate organs, Stanford Medicine-led research finds
Nope, you’re right to call me out, I was incorrect and reading this way too late.

My apologies to the researchers

lovich··on The Contract on America
> She

I mentioned two people the same as you, differentiate between them please

> was perceived by middle America as a left-wing candidate coming from a left-wing state.

Thank you for explaining one half of your statement, how do you explain the “no accomplishments” part of your statement?

If you are going to rely on polls again then I’ll ask in advance how reality matters at all and it isn’t just down to vibes?

lovich··on Human brain is two separate organs, Stanford Medicine-led research finds
Additionally the only images in the linked article are also face pics of the researchers instead of anything on the information about said research.

I want to trust science and dislike anti vaxxers but it’s difficult to argue against them when researchers act like the caricature they are mocked as.

Self aggrandizing articles with misleading headlines is giving me 2 triggers for not trusting the content.

lovich··on The Contract on America
Hillary Clinton, and Kamala “Copmala” Harris were left wing candidates with no experience?

How do you justify that statement at all? Especially when you can point to Trump as a candidate with no experience who won.

lovich··on Y Combinator's PAC is throwing money at Republicans across the country
He’s literally doing the meme of republicans stopping democrats from legislating and then pointing to the lack of legislation as why they should be blocked.

Also lol at the trifecta for 15 years comment from him.

lovich··on Y Combinator's PAC is throwing money at Republicans across the country
Use https://news.ycombinator.com/active with showdead set to yes, and recommend others do so.

No way to vouch for flagged posts so that’s the second best option

lovich··on War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?
Damn, haven’t seen this blatant of Russian propaganda in a while.

Are the Ukrainians Nazis with no real culture too?

lovich··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
The quantity of an action can have a qualitative difference. I wish I didn’t haven’t to explain that to so many people everytime a new technology is created.
lovich··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
I assumed the comment I was replying to was in reference to our constellation of military bases and the economic machinations post ww2.

If it was referencing history prior to that then I would reply with the as you mentioned guano mines, fruit production, and keeping European powers out of our regional backyard after several scuffles with Spain and Britain at minimum.

I’d also mention the boat touching still.

The Marine’s Hymn doesn’t mention the Halls of Montezuma and the Shores of Tripoli for no reason.

lovich··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
The reason for our overseas empire was to maintain our economic dominance.

If everyone voluntarily refused to touch boats and only trade oil for dollars we may have invested differently.

lovich··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Well it’s easy for these people. They are smarter than the plebs and so the plebs are barely if even human.

That’s like a running theme in these connected groups and even the article calls it out.

lovich··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
The higher up comment expressing disbelief at people not having heard of this is just a form of https://xkcd.com/2501/
lovich··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
I think I’m comfortable, even though the aspersion is on me, saying that anyone who can recognize Aella is too chronically online.

The zizians were a national headline and you only need to be plugged into US politics a little bit to know of Curtis yarvin given his influence on Peter thiel, musk, and Vance so I’d give knowledge of them a pass

Edit: I also know of the sanely diagram meme for her so that’s even more evidence. Maybe I should detox off the internet for a bit

lovich··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
> A sex worker from Idaho who became one of the subculture’s most-read writers and now runs an AI-doom propaganda residency with Grimes, Elon Musk’s ex-girlfriend.

I hate that I know who that is from this scant description.

> A splinter sect that fled to tugboats and whose members have been linked to six deaths. And a blogger who wanted to abolish democracy, found the ear of several billionaire patrons, and watched his ideas come to fruition in the vice president’s office.

Actually fuck I know who all of these people are.

lovich··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
Yea. I've evaluated these AI development patterns 3-4 times over the past year while applying for jobs.

I've been told by currently employed engineers that I was at state of the art development after a week of using them each time.

This also seems to have played out in hiring as every interview I've managed to pull has been completely schizophrenic with the interviewers wanting me to show AI fluency(for whatever that means) and then seemingly panicking mid way through as I start using the AI that can immediately solve the bog standard interview questions and then switch to having me manually build things.

lovich··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
I was before the market crunched.

What's the reason for the credential check?

lovich··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
> It had nothing to do with web dev culture.

It may not have been started because of web dev culture, but it definitely influenced web dev culture.

lovich··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
> …been the norm for months…

You know, it’s petty, but I think one of the things I hate the most about AI is that it surpassed front end JavaScript frameworks in terms of changing what the standard is every few years.

What’s the point of learning anything if it becomes obsolete faster than the seasons change?

lovich··on AI 'kill switch' may need to be mandatory, Anthropic co-founder tells BBC
There no benefit to data racks in space other than being outside of government jurisdictions, although the US and China already have demonstrated satellite killers.

Every problem data centers have gets harder in space other than one small spot in orbit that can get uninterrupted solar.

Heat dissipation, upgrades, repairs. All get significantly harder to perform the same work that can be done cheaper and more easily on the ground.

Like really I’ll turn it around on you, what’s the benefit to AI data centers in space?

> As long people are "sticking it to the man" with ad-block…

Do you think people are using as blockers because they are being rebellious?

Modern day ads interrupt the content people are intending. The content isn’t built around them like back in the days of tv with commercial breaks, they usually just randomly intercede.

They also aren’t what anyone is watching the content for. The only exception I can think of is the superbowl where the ads are legitimately something people intend to watch.

> And yt doesn't have anything to do with it, hence not monopolistic.

That is inherently not true. A company doesn’t have to take an action to be a monopoly. And actually that’s even more not true after thinking about it. YouTube has nothing to do with YouTube being the number one video site?

lovich··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Actually that’s a decent counter example.

YouTube hasn’t degraded in service or quality and when I pay them for the ad free service, they don’t try and sneak more ads in anyway like some other services have or the historical example of cable tv.

I’d probably be a lot happier if most software companies produced a product and kept a user relationship with me the way YouTube has.

When I said the tech billionaires I meant the actual oligarchs.

Companies will eventually take a cost benefit evaluation and stop fighting if the risk is too high or the fines too large.

A personal billionaire who decides to fuck you over is capable of behaving irrationally and just beating you via resources.

Look at trumps infinite appeal strategy which apparently works.

He only just was forced to pay Jean Carrol a few months ago, four years after he lost his civil case.

If you’re a regular Joe and some billionaire harmed you in a way that hurt your income. You’re not gonna be able to afford 4 years of legal battles.

As long as money buys power in our legal system, you can’t compete with someone with effectively infinite more wealth than you.

lovich··on Anthropic tells investors it will be profitable for second straight quarter
That’s maybe a reasonable argument but it’s not one Anthropic is making.

If the article is to be believed they aren’t including their training costs.

Also lol at reporting it as above 80% without accounting for the revenue sharing as well.

I bet anyone’s finances look great if you just start ignoring all the money they owe.

lovich··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
It’s been working like that in the US for a while.

Do you think the bottom 99% of the country would ever win a legal fight with one of the tech billionaires?

Even if they were 100% in the right, they could just drag out the legal process with endless motions and appeals until the average Joe lacked the funds to continue the fight.

lovich··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
I’m personally upset that the modern day companies have decided only extracting profit matters and not building a better product that makes people willing to pay.

At least in the digital world almost every piece of software and website I use has been getting objectively worse the past few years. And I don’t mean like, I hate this UI layout so it’s objectively worse. I mean like new Reddit freezing my tab completely ~50% of the time and its notifications page not registering my clicks and instead clicking on the page behind it. Or like Microsoft breaking pasting in fucking Excel and managing to ship that to consumers as another article today showed. Or the fact that activities in Windows that used to be lightning fast like searching or opening an application now take seconds to 10s of seconds.

We’ve reached a point where companies are too entrenched in their monopolies and are currently in a mode of just figuring out how to extract as much rent as possible.

The only companies I know of still in heavy competition are AI companies but they are doing the tried and true method of heavily subsidizing their business until they kill their competition and I have no doubt that whoever wins will switch over to rent extraction as well.

lovich··on Blizzard Revives 'StarCraft' Franchise with Open-World Sci-Fi Shooter
I guess they’re wanting to go after the void Bungie left with Destiny?

I can’t tell if this is too late a move though or if there will be a void and a desire still by the time this releases.

Is there any other studio working on releasing a similar game already since it was obvious Destinys life was short lived for a while with Bungies focus on Marathon?

lovich··on Anthropic tells investors it will be profitable for second straight quarter
The models don’t exist without training. I don’t see how excluding the training cost from the thing they are selling(inference) is perfectly reasonable and not just an accounting trick.

If I am building a widget and have a widget factory that cost money to build and operate, is it reasonable to only use the cost of shipping my widgets to my buyer as the costs for my gross margin?

lovich··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
>Companies have a largely democratic component at the top, called the board. Voters (those who own the company) have representatives on the board. Some boards also have representatives from the employees, that varies.

damn, I guess feudal aristocracies or oligarchical nations are also democratic.

If you are describing how a US corporation that is not a worker cooperative is run as a democracy, you either dont know what the term means or you are being in bad faith.

when a literal handful(as in the number of people could be counted between both hands) can decide the fate of tens to hundreds of thousands of people, calling it "largely democratic" is lolworthy.
