Quit with the bait. It’s obvious with your follow up questions that when you said “Genuine question:”, it was disingenuous.

In the extremely unlikely situation that you weren’t, and so the mods can see I engaged with the question.

I personally am against for economic reasons and feel like point 2 laid out by me is the most likely, although there is another option I could entertain where the people running these companies are so high on their own supply with the TESCREAL beliefs, or literally high like we’ve seen guys like Musk be in public, that they actually believe in this being economically plausible despite all contrary evidence.

Anyone managing a terrestrial data center that had this level of performance and called it a “data-center” much less “operational” would be fired for cause.

And ah, I see you’ve been dancing around with definitions and goomba fallacies around this thread. You definitely asked your question in good faith.

lovich··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
Because it’s so fucking stupid for the stated benefits that you get

- people getting nerd sniped and explaining why it’s wrong

- people who assume it isn’t wrong given the level of competence these groups have demonstrated already and are incensed by what they feel are bald faced lies to pump up stock prices like has been done before

- people who think this is some conspiracy(rightly or wrongly) to surreptitiously get weapon platforms or other support for weapon platforms into space.

The majority of tradeoffs for data centers make them always better on the ground. Just due to maintenance and heat alone.

> There are many people on HN that despise it and say it will not and will never work, but here we are, they are flying them up to space and presumably, will start working soon.

This is the one Google says they can run in 15 minute bursts and I’ve yet to find where they document what the cooldown period is before they can run again.

Also 99% of people saying it’ll never work are talking economically, not that theoretically you could get something up that works in the laws of physics.

It’s not great, and I wasn’t arguing for it. I was saying AI isn’t going to lead to that on its own.

Mechanically how is AI going to lead to a social safety net? You can’t just handwave the productivity increases when they are all owned by a handful of concentrated wealth

lovich··on New Jersey fines data center $1.1M after drone pics expose 62 gas generators
1.1 million dollars and they are still allowed to run the gas generators?

I think this is inaccurately called a fine when it sounds like a retroactively applied permit fee to operate.

lovich··on Early rogue AI agent activity and attempts to hack found on urlquery.net
The METR investigation which relied on voluntary data provided from OpenAI instead of being forced open and having everything forensically investigated?

The METR investigation which took course over a few days and used OpenAI models to do the analysis?

The METR investigation which in the course of those few days apparently spent 400k in api credits which is giving gas town vibes?

The METR investigation is about as believable as the Twitter files where the journalists sat there and verbally asked a Twitter employee to query the database and then called that a full investigation into everything.

METRs own words below on their setup and time line

> The initial planned investigation period was two days on premises, but OpenAI invited us to return twice to review additional data and conduct additional experiments to address dataset limitations in earlier versions of this report, ultimately providing datasets that we verified to contain the vast majority of agent communication and activity related to this incident. As we describe in our investigation timeline appendix, we substantially deepened our understanding of this incident both times, significantly expanding and revising this report.[46]

> Over the course of this investigation, OpenAI provided us with the dump of ~1.2 million entries from the main message board and the dataset of ~1300 transcripts we describe below, as well as free API credits for GPT-5.6 Sol for analysis.[47] At our request, they raised the rate limits on our second and third period on premises,[48] which was very helpful for efficiently analyzing this large volume of data. We estimate we spent roughly ~$400K in API credits over the six days of our investigation.

> We did not have the ability to query HPIM (the primary model involved in this incident); OpenAI stated it was also not available to OpenAI researchers.[49] We also did not have the ability to directly access relevant data from OpenAI infrastructure, but we could request additional datasets and OpenAI shared additional datasets on several occasions.

> We requested to speak with researchers investigating this incident, and asked them questions to understand their impressions of agents’ behavior, reasoning, and collaboration in this incident and to understand how the datasets we were using were constructed. Over the course of our time on premises, we spoke with nine researchers in some depth. It was helpful for our investigation to be able to engage with many forthcoming and collaborative researchers, and we appreciate researchers making time on short notice during a busy period to inform our investigation.

> The problem is there is no amount of punishment that I can put on you that can even get anywhere close to the amount of damage you cased.

Sounds like your corporation should be dismantled then. But doing more than a fine in the millions is obviously not possible

lovich··on Jensen Huang says the junior developer problem ends in two years
Is the AI coming to save us in the room right now?

Don’t hint at it. Lay out the mechanics of how you think AI is going to become a safety net for the average person.

I say this from a glass house. You are an asshole.

lovich··on White House Says Access Is a 'Privilege' in Court Filing Defending Media Ban
Cool then don’t be coy about your beliefs on rights and just open up with that instead.

And ah I recognize your name now, I have always found your writings a tad off to put it mildly.

lovich··on Jensen Huang says the junior developer problem ends in two years
lol, no. It’s currently being deployed in feverish attempt to remove jobs.

I see company doing layoffs left and right because they can do the same or more with less employees. I’m not seeing any companies feverishly hiring engineers because the productivity per hour of labor is higher.

There is also no guarantee that AI will lead to any social safety net, they are orthogonal concepts.

The only thing that would lead to a social safety net is political will and currently all the political will behind the technology firms building AI appears to be firmly behind dismantling democracy and becoming oligarchical leaders of their little fiefdoms while the rest of us can get fucked.

lovich··on Jensen Huang says the junior developer problem ends in two years
It’s feeling less and less like human progress and more and more like progress for a small group at the top of our economic structure who are hoovering up everything for themselves.

Who gives a fuck if some techno barons can deploy novel software at the drop of a hat if it means I lose my career in an environment without social safety nets.

It’s not progress from my perspective when my life quality regresses.

lovich··on White House Says Access Is a 'Privilege' in Court Filing Defending Media Ban
You’re being ridiculous if you’re down to the level of saying you don’t have a right to life because there’s no guarantee.

In that case there’s no rights to anything, you just don’t believe in them, and you can stop being coy about by only calling out individual instances people refer to as a right

lovich··on White House Says Access Is a 'Privilege' in Court Filing Defending Media Ban
I mean he blatantly said it was because of their reporting. That’s an in the nose first amendment violation. Full text of his ban announcement is below which was surprisingly hard to find between his firehose of shit in truth social and every media report about it only quoting fragments of sentences.

> I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them “alive.” Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS! Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

lovich··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Well you see you don’t understand. We’re America, the biggest and best military like no one’s ever seen.

We’re like 6-7 tiers deep on that aren’t we? Does every c developer understand the instruction set on the cpus their code is executing against? Does every c#/java/other managed memory language deeply understand their garbage collector?

It’s abstractions all the way down and most people aren’t going to have an intimate understanding of every layer, and it’s not economically worth it for the vast majority to even try

lovich··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
Honestly. Of all the places to deploy first I’m happy it’s that one.

The government politicians who approved this are frequent flyers out of there, so they’re at least getting their lives out on the line before the rest of the country if it proves ill managed or conceived.

It’s basically dogfooding.

lovich··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
No, even professional companies with critical data balk at this.

I worked at a company worth a few billion and the leadership balked when they told engineering they wanted a near instantaneous failover system and our department informed them that would require paying for a second environment that could be rolled over to.

It is rare to find leaders who can accept the cost of redundant infrastructure that is there for emergency backup.

What puzzles me is why they can’t accept it when they are perfectly fine with insurance costs and I can’t see much of a difference between the two when looking at a spreadsheet of costs other than possibly tax differences between the type of expenditure.

lovich··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
And auditing that is expensive and you always get given hell from the assholes going “why am I paying for this if nothing has gone wrong”

The amount of shit I was given everytime I went through a checklist working at a fedramp certified company working with emergency alerts on the phone system made me prematurely gray.

I could feel the barely contained seething rage everytime I told the execs that the reason this release will take 3 days and not be instantaneous like your friends releases at a faang and that information made you embarrassed at your dinner party, is because you agreed to this process contractually years ago and now it’s a crime if I just sign off on it being ok without actually checking that it’s ok.

Nah, we just went with Bambu. No shade to the reprap community but my enjoyment of the hobby is with the printing of models, not tinkering with my machine constantly.

lovich··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Is there any allegations of price fixing in this case? The demand just skyrocketed. Other than legislation like the defense act in the US I don’t know of any governments that have jurisdiction over these ram makers that mandate companies produce more of a product.

Especially not for consumer goods.

If you are going to rely on polls again then I’ll ask in advance how reality matters at all and it isn’t just down to vibes?

lovich··on Human brain is two separate organs, Stanford Medicine-led research finds
Additionally the only images in the linked article are also face pics of the researchers instead of anything on the information about said research.

I want to trust science and dislike anti vaxxers but it’s difficult to argue against them when researchers act like the caricature they are mocked as.

Self aggrandizing articles with misleading headlines is giving me 2 triggers for not trusting the content.
