It is of course depends with what you compare but still it was shockingly bigger then I was prepared/wanted to see
When I am trying to recall my childhood the memory of ‘dreaming about writing my own program in assemly’ is more vivid then actually writing it. You see it took some time and a few preparation steps:
1. Preparing computer:
1.1 Discovering the opportunity: Turns out it can be soldered by myself which makes it cheap enough and thus actually even possible.
1.2 Convincing parents that even though I had no interest in electronics before it’s a good idea to build something called “computer”. Never mind what it is, it only needs a few chips and some other electronic components. I’ve seen one. It can work!
1.3 Hunting all components for weeks. Not an easy task where I have been back then.
1.4 Soldering all components to the board. Learning soldering on-the-go. I had zero interest in electronics before my friend had shown me a computer. It was the first time in my life I took soldering iron in my hands. Noticing expression of shock on faces of my parents I was calming down them with phrases like: How hard it should be? What could possibly go wrong? Right? :)
1.5 Discovering that computer would not work after soldering. It needs something called Power Supply and they don’t sell it. So the only way is to build one.
1.5.1 Hunting for components again. Power supply had to be build with short-circuit protection because burning computer would mean no second chance.
1.5.2 Building special power supply with basic components transistors, resistors, condensers, diods etc.
1.5.3 Learning some basic things about electronics and how power supplies function. Finding problems. Fixing them and making it work properly.
1.6 Discovering there is no way to buy a keyboard and recalling :) that computer actually needs Input device.
1.6.1 Hunting for old calculators.
1.6.2 Disassembling few calculators to extract buttons
1.6.3 Making keyboard with extracted buttons.
1.7 Turning On the computer. Discovering it’s not working and needs debugging.
1.8 Learning Digital electronics for some time from the book “Digital Electronics” by Tokhaim. Discovering that local schematics are not the same as in the foreign book. Oops! :) Tracing all kind of problems. Fixing them one by one and arriving to the stage where something should be shown on the screen.
1.9 Discovering that home TV doesn’t have ‘video in’.
1.9.1 Disassemble TV partially, study schematics and how TV works.
1.9.2 Make add-on with ’Video-In’ to make TV function as a Monitor.
1.10 Turn On the computer and Debug it with visual feedback. Much better! :)
1.11 Debugging computer with oscilloscope and learning how it should work on the go.
1.12 Celebrate first successfull start and making sure that everything works as it should.
2. Running Computer with visual feedback(monitor) and input device (keyboard) while everything is working properly :) Much better :)3. Discovering how to run own programs. BIOS had no documentation. With ‘try and error’ discover how to put codes into the memory and what command will actually execute them. Then locate where the video memory starts. To at least see something! Calling builtin BIOS functions was not an option.
4. Learning codes of CPU from the table by ‘try and error’ . Table had only mnemonics without any detailed descriptions. So you basically just guess the meaning. Sometimes you guess wrong. For example HLT will not stop the program properly :) Meaning you write program again :)
And then finally , after those preparation steps I wrote my first assembly program. I believe it was some 8 dots moving horizontally.
So I had a lot of time for that “dreaming about my first program” … :)
It was Sunday, and it worked. Small white line sliding in the center of the screen. Lovely. What you wouldn’t do for that!? :)
This is incorrect and it’s demonstration of putting words into my mouth. Another trick to be noticed.
Short reflection on this exchange shows clearly that I am deliberately trying to avoid putting words into your mouth in order to see your analysis of the outcome to the actions you’ve suggested for Israel to take.
And while I do that you are desperately trying to avoid answering second part of the question.
“What outcome you expect after Israel does what you’ve suggested?”
Since analyse of outcome did not arrive I did it for you.
>The alternative, you claim …
I didn’t. I have analysed your so called “alternative” which it is not. Israel has already tested this “brilliant” idea in 2005 by withdrawing it’s forces from Gaza together with all settlements in Gaza strip in case you didn’t know and it have led to the current situation with a bigger scale of loss of life. Not caring about this fact together with your repeated lack of wish to analyse deadly outcome of your own suggestion demonstrates your lack of caring about the loss of life wether it is intentional or not.
> In other words …
Well let’s leave ‘In other words’ as ‘another words’ that are just words. They ate yours, not my.
The confusion in your comment between some fantasies and my actual opinion rises questions about integrity of ways in which you’ve analysed this conflict in general.
well, With Quake not really :) It’s hard to explain why. I’ve seen nothing as satisfactory as shotgun in Doom. ;) More realistic - yes. Better rendered - yes, but nothing of the same level of satisfaction :) I think I know the answer but like with any art it’s difficult to put into words. Easier to make something with the similar energy. Perhaps one day …
>… Scanner Sombre
Thank you for the advice. I’ll take a look. I recall Elite was also nice once . I’ve made computer that was able to run it with my own hands which involved soldering and debugging it with oscilloscope for the first time in my life. So it was a double pleasure once it worked :) Or double magic :)
Well what you have suggested would inevitably lead to what is happening already only on a bigger scale. Consciously or not it seems you do not mind that and thus the loss of life because it is too hard for you to analyse outcome of your own propositions.
Did you manage to find something ?
Are you a parrot or something?
No, I am a person and you are exploring limits of my famous patience which is allowed only to my students as long as they wish to learn.
Also I am very persuasive in following logic and being responsible for own words. The only sensible way to discuss hard issues and to keep being in sync in conversation.
>Do you not understand that NOT killing 20k Palestinians in 60 days is an option (and answers your question)?
Help me understand what you suggest exactly and what outcome you expect after Israel does it? Make your statement so we would be on the same page to discuss it. Then it actually would be possible to discuss it.
Don’t you think you should be responsible with your words and understand consequences of things you suggest before opening your mouth about such sensitive topics? I am getting sick of irresponsible people spreading BS around without ever stating what they say or thinking through the consequences of the things they suggest.
>I've posed several questions to you and you keep not answering them.
This is because you didn’t answer one and only question I ever asked you in the first place.
Sure this could be a possibility once you finish describing consequences of the action of withdrawal you’ve suggested Israel to take. Suggested alternative is incomplete without you describing realistic outcome of it an thus leaves the current option Israel took as the only one possible which makes discussing it irrelevant wether you like it or not.
Please responsibly describe outcome of the suggested alternative and then we can compare it with current situation.
Since those are usual tactics to avoid answering hard questions it makes one wandering wether you are deliberately trying to avoid answering it responsibly or you did not understand the question?
Can you provide your answer instead of repeating your disagreement with the choice Israel have made? You’ve made it clear already few times. What is still not clear is this: What is your answer to the hard question.
You keep avoiding answering it.
Let me remind the question if you forgot it:
So, what Israel should do in your opinion? And what outcome you expect after it does it?
I hope we will see your answer this time. Not criticism of the answer provided by Israel but your own answer. I hope I made it as clear as possible by now.
I also hope as someone with such strong opinion on the matter you took time to think about it and you do have your answer.
I personally do not like (in soft words) when button says one thing and delivers something else. So I think renaming Download into ‘Download options’ were you give choice download ‘ free’, ‘donate’, ‘pay for pro’ etc as you like is acceptable and feels good enough. I do not see why in that case it should reduce number of downloads but every prediction is always a prediction and nothing is better then the real life test.
Well this should have caused those people to do something with Hammas controlling the area long before recent events. Isn’t it? This would have be much more Pro-human don’t you think?
I know I asked another person but the main question was :
“ What Israel should do in your opinion? What outcome you expect once it does it?”
Can you answer that question too?
As to the “agenda” I see different “agenda”.
May be I am missing something important in understanding? I was trying to tweak some projects for my needs. I successfully did it but it was a nightmare.
I can criticise Mac OS endlessly and was even actively downvoted here when reported facts of my personal experience with bugs on newly purchased M1 (you can dig the history if you wish). I was shocked how quality degraded in my opinion.
People here were even claiming that it’s my specific faulty machine was to blame. This ‘faulty’ machine by the way works to this very day without any hardware problems except flickering of the monitor which is idiotic in my opinion design decision (to use PWM).
So as you can see I am very critical of macOS and consider using Windows after macOS like completely unbearable. And yet your comment have puzzled me.
When I was learning macOS after years with Windows I remember that certain things were like you say “impossible to discover”. Yet with all that being said I find other GUI implementations in GNU/Linux not any better.
Perhaps I’ve missed something in KDE? What did I miss? What “doing anything beyond basic” means in your usage? What kind of tasks/workflows are those ? How KDE better in those?
So are you saying it’s even possible? I wish to learn at least one option to do it. Few is even better. How at all you can realistically make living this way?
Ok, not living , just partial income. Ok not partial. Some income?
I am not making fun of I honestly look some way .
I understand that if you maintain 10 years some essential part of essential software project then people eventually come to you for consulting or will pay you to shift this part toward their requirements.
But other then that? Like can you write useful free software program and really have some money from it ?
Great comment and again no answer.
You think question with suggestive answer is dishonest way of conducting debate? Ok. I get that. Let’s remove any suggestiveness from the question. “ What would you suggest Israel do if fighting hamas is not an option.”
I am not OP an I personally did not suggest anything, I just wanted to see your responsible answer.
So, what Israel should do in your opinion? And what outcome you expect after it does it?
PS: I’ve read the article. Disappointed by the quality of it. It is written with intention of emotional impact and to push predefined agenda. It twists meaning by playing with words. I notice those tricks and can’t read it with keeping my face ‘straight’( using your word).
“ What would you suggest Israel do if fighting hamas is not an option.”
Avoiding hard questions is easier as it doesn’t require responsibility. Are you able to provide your answer please to the hardest part of the parent comment?
Did you also have noticed manipulative tactics of Chomsky and Finkelstein? Because I did. And once you do it will be hard to take them seriously or believe them blindly. At least you would not be so sure as you seem to be at the moment. You have mentioned those two like they deliver some kind of revelation of ‘the truest truth ever available to uneducated humanity’ but I’ve listened to them very carefully many times and they actively use dumb propaganda tricks to shift accents and deliver nothing that even close to the truth.
They took samples from the tank as I understand before and after flushing. If it’s in the sample some of it presumably goes to the water you use.
‘ When trying to track down a ghost like crash, nuke all of the Smart Pointers in the code. Make them raw pointers and delete them when you know it is safe. Prior to the manual delete, put some unique values out there prior to the deletion and be certain to null out the pointer you just deleted. The unique values make it a lot easier to track down which pointer was actually the culprit. “
With modern attitude of putting ‘Smart’ in front of every primitive automat I usually expect dealing with two dumbs - automat itself and another dumb who is going to relay on it.
The worse part about “Smart” solutions is that now I have to dedicate part of my life for exploring the realm of idiocy that was driving someone else who had made this particular “Smart” device/technology.
Instead of learning how to shift gears in the car and shift them when I need it I need to learn how some builder of automatic gear was thinking “when it is better to shift gears when driver is dumb” . Then (since automatic usually never work as I wish) I have to do mumbo-jambo dance to make it shift gears as I wanted. Something that was done easily with manual stick already.
Automatic works only when it is really perfectly done which is a rare case . So as a builder of automatic/smart solutions - be modest ! Leave “Manual’ option available. Just in case.
The only thing I usually wish from “Smart” solutions is the option to switch this stupid thing off unless it really works perfectly but even then …
finally nick makes sense :)
My challenge is to play with CPU designs at some point but in the beginning I agree it is easier to start with something like led blink, nand , register and then to other staff.
Is there some FPGA hardware you can advice to use for easy start? One that potentially(once I learn) capable to do let’s say UART or USB ? I do not know really how much of FPGA power required for those. Or it would be too big/expensive ? I can’t orient myself with this yet but I wish something physical to have for real motivation to ignite.
I’ve built my first computer with soldering all the parts and then started debugging it with oscilloscope to see signals from chips and analyse them to find the problem. And in doing so I have quickly realised that I am missing something. This something was ‘How chips actually work’. Turned out it was called Digital electronics so I’ve decided to learn this on the way.
My treasure and source of inspiration at school time was this book: Digital Electronics by Roger Tokheim. I was dragging it to school and back every day just like people cary notebooks these days. This was my bible back then. Boys in the school made fun of me for this. The book was amazing and I think it still is.
I remember it all as very exciting time.
Now FPGA seems like a nice opportunity to revisit all of this after many years of programming and developing a new point of view about many paradigms.
May be you can direct me and others like me toward a good community and tips for shortening a learning curve. Possibly many things I am familiar with already and yet with FPGA I didn’t find a good/easy way to start so far. Perhaps you can advice something about ‘how’ and ‘were’ to begin.
