lostsock··on M1 Ultra Geekbench Score
And here are the numbers for the i9-12900k - another comparison people are likely to be interested in.

edit: It appears the numbers I posted below are an outlier?

A better average result might be 1990 single-core 17595 multi-core

See: https://i.imgur.com/FebpFR7.png

2740 single-core 25906 multi core

lostsock··on Why do dogs tilt their heads? New study offers clues
I thought this was already established? I learnt about it from Smarter Every Day: https://youtu.be/Oai7HUqncAA?t=388

Here is the source they reference: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/why-dogs-tilt-their-h...

lostsock··on Show HN: MaryJane – Mjpeg server in 30 lines of async Python
Seems to be a useful and "dumb" way of syncing playback across multiple devices, windows or browsers. Nice work
lostsock··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
You don't pay an extra $10,000 for autopilot, that's the amount for Full Self Driving
lostsock··on Comma Three [video]
I agree that the website is very unclear for people who don't already know what comma do.

Their meta description is better, but still not great.

"Make driving chill. Upgrade your car with a comma three. comma is building the Android for cars. We have an open source driver assistance system that runs on most modern cars."

It's essentially an aftermarket version of the Tesla Autopilot system.

lostsock··on Show HN: Print a WiFi Login Card
Samsung Galaxy Ultra 21 can do this too.
lostsock··on Ask HN: What's the best paper you've read in 2020?
Do you know if a video of the talk is available anywhere? I was able to find the slides here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4sat5w5exw288zf/AABTC_j9GkRVEChpn...
lostsock··on Alphabet announces Q3 2020 earnings
Couldn't agree more. YouTube premium and Google Music for the one price? Works on all of my devices, no ads, and totally seamless. Such good value for money.
lostsock··on American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls for elimination of daylight saving time
We have daylight savings time in Melbourne, Australia.

Without it the sun would set at 4:07pm on the shortest day of the year, which is incredibly depressing.

I'm so glad we have DST.

lostsock··on Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack?
Not to mention hijacking other accounts that would plausibly say things along the same lines as "proof" that the statement is real.

Even after dozens of high profile accounts were hacked many were still commenting that they didn't think it was possible for it to be a twitter vulnerability, but rather individual accounts being compromised or a 3rd party. If you only tweeted plausible things about war and corroborated it from multiple accounts at the same time you can reinforce things pretty easily.

lostsock··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
I bet if I asked 10 people what is more autonomous, an autopilot or a copilot 10 out of 10 of them would say a copilot.
lostsock··on YouTube removed a viral video of two doctors calling for an end to quarantine
Wow, the last three minutes are very illustrative! Just watch for yourself.

lostsock··on Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom
FWIW Jitsi Meet just added "Blur my background" as a Beta feature. It works decently.
lostsock··on Alphabet announces fourth quarter and fiscal year 2019 results [pdf]

lostsock··on iOS 13 app tracking alert has dramatically cut location data flow to ad industry
The same is true on Android, at least for me on my Pixel 4[1]

lostsock··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
I used a Lime scooter in Brisbane Australia when I there for a wedding last year, it was a great experience. Easy to find, quick to get around, convenient and inexpensive.

Saw both tourists and locals using them and they were always placed neatly and out of the way.

The weather in Brisbane means they'd be in use pretty much year-round, such a great idea!

lostsock··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
From where I'm sitting you do an unbelievably fantastic job dang and apply rules evenhandedly. Thank you.
lostsock··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (October 2019)
I've used your store a bunch of times, thanks for making it! :D
lostsock··on Traffic apps turned L.A.’s neighborhoods into ”shortcuts”
I'd be amazed if this is true. Especially as Waze has a GPS based speedometer built in that goes red if you go over the speed limit.

I image it looks at a combination of speed limit, current traffic and then if the historical data is faster than the speed limit it discards the historical data.

lostsock··on How we send 22k emails every hour
FYI there is generally 3 hours overlap of working hours between the East coast of Australia and the West coast of USA. 8am our Melbourne time is 3pm San Fran time (the day before).

lostsock··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
Ignore all the haters, you're building something cool that has the power to transform peoples lives. The fact that you're even thinking about your impact on the world puts you above what most people would do. Keep up the good work.
lostsock··on How I manage customer feedback for my bootstrapped SaaS
We have a chat widget for our product aimed at elemantary school teachers and they absolutely love it.

We get everything from random praise, to sales inquiries, to technical support questions, questions about the resources themselves, pedagogical questions.

We use slaask.com (which incidently I first saw on HN) so each incoming chat request is just a new channel on slack, super easy to use and a huge feature for us. In fact it's one of the most often commented on part of the presentation where we ask prospective clients to say hi and they get an answer back from a real person within seconds, it's really helped our conversion rates.

lostsock··on Launch HN: Prometheus (YC W19) – Remove CO2 from Air and Turn It into Gasoline
This sounds amazing, thank you for sharing and for answering so many questions.

I know that you focus is on scale, so you're not likely to pursue this, but the prospect of a fridge sized fuel generator seems like a wonderful stop-gap for the existing ICE cars.

Having one in your garage that produces fuel from rooftop solar panels when there is excess generated, and then not having to worry about transporting the fuel or going to a petrol station sounds like a wonderful future while we transition to EV.

Really looking forward to hearing how this plays out, good luck.

lostsock··on You probably don’t need input type=“number”
Do you have a suggested alternative? Personally I love scroll to zoom on maps, find it a really natural action.
lostsock··on What is the Boeing 737 Max Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System?
Super interesting, he's really great at explaining things in laymens terms. Thanks for sharing
lostsock··on Military wants to power bases with small nuclear reactors
Surely securing a device such as this wouldn't be the hardest part?

Just dig a really hole in the middle of the base, drop it in there and cover it with either dirt or cememnt, leaving a small shaft for maintanance/access. Then dig it out again at the end?

That would protect it from everything other than the entire base being completely overrun, in which case the enemy has already won right?
