losteric··on Accelerating Gemma 4: faster inference with multi-token prediction drafters
> using it all day (say 8h) costs between 0.7 and about 14 kg of CO2 in the US,

How do you get to this range? That's quite a spread.

When I last ran the math, my daily usage (efficient and effective productivity, not spamming Gas Town) came to about 0.67 kg of CO2, which is roughly equivalent to my individual emissions from the 1 mile public bus ride home from work.

“The community” - which community? Where? This is a brand new website, there’s next to no online presence for the name (all seemingly unrelated).

It reads like using LLMs to fake some credibility

losteric··on AI Will Be Met with Violence, and Nothing Good Will Come of It
The problem with billionaires is they have a vastly disproportionate voice in the political system, which leads to ineffective politicians and policies not aligned with a thriving society.

eg: cutting funding to the IRS and advanced science, both of which have long proven positive dividends… or advancing new wars abroad to directly blow up money.

Plus wbillionaires are nothing special. Right time, right place.

Steve Jobs is a perfect example of someone who was in it for the love of the game. He wouldn’t have been any different if his income was taxed at 90%.

The top 1% own 31% and the top 10% own 68% of household wealth.

The group you’re talking about, 70-95 percentile, are often people that just own a house near a big city or a farm/small business.

losteric··on Artemis II will use laser beams to live-stream 4K moon footage at 260 Mbps
That’s so conspiratorial. They could just stream with a slightly delay to interrupt the feed on disaster. I think it’s way more likely they just didn’t have a good broadcasting team.

What is this submission??

It's linking a closed issue, with a fairly incendiary title off of one sentence by a now-deleted Github user.

How did you even find that?

losteric··on Building SQLite with a small swarm
This blog post doesn't say anything about your experience.

How well does the resulting code perform? What are the trade-offs/limitations/benefits compared to SQLite? What problems does it solve?

Why did you use this process? this mixture of models? Why is this a good setup?

losteric··on U.S. had almost no job growth in 2025
Money follows ROI. Making those speculative or detrimental industries less profitable is the answer.

Regulations on micro-targeting, data privacy, algorithm transparency, legal liability for content, etc.. all push back against the externalities of ads/social media.

Regulations on energy and land use can make eg data center build outs more expensive, pressuring back against speculative AI trash.

Taxing big tech companies, subsidizing manufacturing education, and judicious import tariffs.. would all create incentives for investing money and labor in hard capabilities

Advertising always seems like a prisoner’s dilemma. If no one advertised, people would still buy things.

losteric··on Web Browsers have stopped blocking pop-ups
The ROI is you’re more likely to buy thinking you get a discount, and especially after doing the work to get the discount code.

The trick is it’s priced assuming that discount will be taken off.

losteric··on ZJIT is now available in Ruby 4.0
Was your app converted to use some Rust framework, or just Rust?
losteric··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
Wow, pretty much no one I know drives under any influence regardless what they use.

I wonder how many of these people were under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

losteric··on Show HN: AlgoDrill – Interactive drills to stop forgetting LeetCode patterns
This by itself completely un-sold me. Requiring such rote memorization is a hard pass for me, it seems the user should just be able to self-assess whether they got it “right” (like Anki cards).
losteric··on Dating: A mysterious constellation of facts
If you lived in an area with many restaurants offering the same favorite-cuisine/foods, and you were picking one to eat at indefinitely and exclusively… how would you choose?

That’s where the analysis paralysis would come in to play in dating.

losteric··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
Code is a hack in the same way that gears and wheels and levers are hacks. People don’t want mechanical components, they just want machines to do stuff for them.
losteric··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
Every good Amazon org has sacrificial bad employees. Managers know a team of all-stars creates risky team dynamics under PIP
losteric··on Claude Code on the web
> I've pumped out a ~15,000 line application heavily utilizing Claude Code over a few days that seems to work, but I don't know how much to trust it.

Can I ask what you built?

“the pipeline” - seems like this is just a personal hackathon project?

Why these models vs other multimodals? Which “nvidia models”?

losteric··on The great software quality collapse or, how we normalized catastrophe
What in the bad rhetoric is this? The trades did and still do have standards.

Hell there was a whole TikTok cycle where people learned there is a right and wrong way to lay tile/grout. One way looks fine until it breaks, the other lasts lifetimes.

It’s the exact same trend as in software: shitty bad big home builders hire crap trades people to build cheap slop houses for suckers that requires extensive ongoing maintenance. Meanwhile there are good builders and contractors that build durable quality for discerning customers.

The problem is exploitation of information asymmetries in the buyer market.

losteric··on Photowand – Turn selfies into professional photos with AI
> if you were learning photography. would you still?

First of all, photography was never a profession I would have recommended a kid get in to lol.

I think it's likely we'll see fewer photography jobs, but the jobs that do exist will require more networking, higher skill, and come with better pay.

For example, in my area there's a surge of demand for weddings shot on film - durable physical memories of reality. Some folks even do daguerreotypes. Or in the other direction, we see "cinematic" weddings with video production teams.

losteric··on US government shuts down after Senate fails to pass last-ditch funding plan

Why only in theory? Why does it get paid back in practice?

losteric··on America's top companies keep talking about AI – but can't explain the upsides
Doubt the form has anything to do with how "controversial" it is. NANDA is using the paper's popularity to collect marketing data.
losteric··on OpenAI and Nvidia announce partnership to deploy 10GW of Nvidia systems

losteric··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
I’m incredulous you’d expect otherwise? This is clearly pandering favor with a certain demographic, in a way that didn’t upset the big money going to Maralargo.

Why would they intervene with outsourcing the jobs instead of H1Bs? And more importantly, how?

losteric··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
> Big corpo is a modern feodal state, where CEO is an emperor, c-suites are kings, managers are barons

Why do people forget about board members and shareholders?

There's a lot of overlap among the rich. I doubt Satya "wants" to RTO. I would suspect board members / shareholders with real estate interests are forcing the policy. (eg Vanguard holds 10%, with Blackrock close behind).

Big corpo is a feudal state, in the sense of complex incestuous power dynamics. It's oversimplifying to call CEOs emperors.

losteric··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
I’m sure geographic consolidation is the end state, we’re just taking incremental steps.
losteric··on The Universe Within 12.5 Light Years

Why should we believe it will continue to advance exponentially? And even if it does, we many find none of the hypotheticals pans out - perhaps we advance exponentially and there is nothing feasible to reach even 0.01c

losteric··on CEO pay at top US companies accelerates at fastest pace in 4 years
“Free markets” are a conceptual tool. People don’t like how the tool is being used in America (and tbh globally).

I’ve always associated HN with a more humane side of the tech industry, relatively more concerned about the wellbeing of society at large.

Big tech is long past having a positive impact, and well into crony capitalism/oligopolies/regulatory capture/maximizing exploitation and rent seeking.

losteric··on The electric fence stopped working years ago

If I think about someone, that's exactly what's on my mind and most interesting. What else would you talk about?
