lorecore··on Microsoft Israel chief leaves amid ethical controversy
The definition of Zionism is: people who believe Israel has a right to exist.
lorecore··on Anthropic forms $200M partnership with the Gates Foundation
As a leftist, I’ve never once considered Bill Gates or Anthropic to be even remotely left-wing. I’m not sure how it would be possible to frame them like that.
lorecore··on [dead]
I don’t follow. Why would Qatar fund Israeli military medical experiments?
lorecore··on The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians
There's nothing "reductive" about being anti-Zionist. That's just base level humanity and many, many people from every part of the political spectrum share those views. Is Tucker Carlson a leftist?
lorecore··on The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians
Who is “we”? I’m not a Zionist.
lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
No one asked the US to kill millions of Koreans, Vietnamese, Iraqis, Afghans… well maybe Israel for those last two, but they’re a terrorist entity.
lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
Happy to if you have any pointers. My original point is that the US kills millions of people outside of its borders, something China most definitely does not. The number is over 12 million post-WWII: https://www.worldfuturefund.org/Reports/Imperialism/usmurder...
lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
I live in a Zionist country (the US) and will absolutely be canceled and blacklisted from my industry (tech) were I to publicly speak out against Zionism. They are attempting to put laws in place to make it illegal to be anti-Zionist. These laws already exist in countries like the UK and Germany. Some, such as anti-BDS laws, already exist in the US as well.

Many technological advances weren't driven by capitalism, early computers and the internet were literally developed by the government.

lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
They're far less imperialistic and I view them as better global citizens than the US. I think they've cultivated a much richer culture than the US as well.
lorecore··on The AI Backlash Could Get Ugly
I don’t think pillaging the earth’s natural resources (even more than we already do) is going to go down well.
lorecore··on The AI Backlash Could Get Ugly
Finite means not free. Who will pay?
lorecore··on The AI Backlash Could Get Ugly
Finite natural resources are by their very nature, limited.
lorecore··on The AI Backlash Could Get Ugly
Where do the raw materials for the thing it's building (or the robot itself for that matter) come from?
lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
As someone who happens to have been born in the US and currently lives here, I welcome China winning. I trust them infinitely more than I trust my own government and industry.

OpenAI and Anthropic are beholden to the capitalist system they exist under and hence cannot compete on local models. Like you say, they must try to maximize shareholder value. China is unencumbered by that constraint.

lorecore··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
It’s certainly too early to call (if you must view this as some sort of adversarial competition). The US is behind on local models, the future for anyone who cares about privacy. There may be step change innovation yet to come that completely shifts the landscape. There’s basically no switching costs to users to change models. They have no lock-in.
lorecore··on Leaving GitHub for Forgejo
Signed commits could solve this in a more decentralized way if people post their public keys on their own domains.
lorecore··on Reimagining the mouse pointer for the AI era
It's anti-social because other people don't want to be filmed by you.
lorecore··on The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians
I submitted this yesterday but it was inexplicably flagged: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48102971
lorecore··on Reimagining the mouse pointer for the AI era
Agreed. A lot of Google products feel anti-social (like Google glass). They are definitely missing a human touch. Perhaps a byproduct of elitism and leet code grind filtering of employees mixed with founder personality.
lorecore··on US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
There are far more dangerous countries with nuclear weapons than Iran (such as Israel). If Iran had nukes, we'd all be safer as Israel/US would be faced with MAD and would be unable to use nuclear weapons against Iran.
lorecore··on US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
Investing in domestic infrastructure would generate even greater returns. Yes, through some financial hand waving, we may funnel money spent on bombs back to US military contractors, but imagine if that same money was spent on a high speed rail system. It would unlock greater efficiency and logistics with the same money staying with US contractors. That's a purely financial take and not even touching on humanitarian or ecological costs of imperialism.
lorecore··on Operation: Epic Furious
They were actually called Kings Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. There was also Police Quest and Space Quest. Sierra Online really had some of the canonical adventure game series.
lorecore··on Microsoft Israel chief leaves amid ethical controversy
I didn't say that the pro-Israel position is mythical. I said that no one became pro-Israel because people are saying that Israel is committing genocide. They were pro-Israel to start and just use that as a rhetorical device to try to get people to stop saying Israel is committing genocide.
lorecore··on Microsoft Israel chief leaves amid ethical controversy
It was you who made the claim that identifying Israel's actions as a genocide (as agreed upon by many genocide experts and international organizations) was an "own-goal". That is to say that by your logic, if you feel that Israel is committing genocide, you should keep quiet about it because you may turn some mythical constituency into a pro-Israel position by simply stating that opinion.
lorecore··on Microsoft Israel chief leaves amid ethical controversy
> The fixation on the term "genocide" has been a major own-goal for advocates of Palestinians

While I, and many others think that Israel is committing genocide, this is not an "own-goal". The only people playing semantics here are Zionists who are staunchly pro-Israel.

lorecore··on GitLab announces workforce reduction and end of their CREDIT values
Ownership means just that, owning the company. The people pushing to place additional burden on workers are the actual owners (the investors and C level execs). Quite the hubris to create a fake class of "ownership" that only extends to taking responsibility and being held accountable but carries none of the benefits of actual ownership.
lorecore··on GitLab announces workforce reduction and end of their CREDIT values
Whenever someone at work tells you to take more ownership, the correct response is: "Sure, I'll take more RSUs". Of course, that's never what they mean. Ownership for me, responsibility for thee.
lorecore··on Nullsoft, 1997-2004 (2004)
This was during the dotcom bubble and AOL/Time Warner need to optically look like they were doing something relevant with the internet to justify their valuation. It was pure messaging, with a bit of killing a threat on the side.
lorecore··on Nullsoft, 1997-2004 (2004)
Publishing Gnutella while being acquired by a greedy media company was such a baller move.
lorecore··on GitHub is sinking
All of the reasons to avoid GitHub are also reasons to avoid the Digital Ocean App platform and Vercel. I use Digital Ocean, but just the VPSs. Don't let yourself get vendor locked in with these middle men, retain control and shoot for the most universal level of the stack you can.
