lopis··on The AI bubble is popping; we just don't know it yet
> 100k/year to 200k/year

Is this range just Silicon Valley or what is this? Even including just Europe, you're looking at a lower bracket of 10k. If you expand to the rest of the world... Or do you think rich cities in the USA, where developers make 100k+ per year, can alone sustain this industry?

lopis··on Ask HN: Anyone else tired of brands discontinuing your favorite everyday items?
Advancements in clothes technology in the last 40 years only optimized production, not quality...
lopis··on Ask HN: Anyone else tired of brands discontinuing your favorite everyday items?
Lidl has trialed vegan lasagna a couple times now. It sells out so incredibly fast all across the country, to the cries of many vegans in Facebook and reddit communities. And yet they discontinued it years ago. I don't understand the economics of it, but I would assume such a popular product would be a no brainier.
lopis··on New HIV vaccine shows unprecedented success in preclinical study
Also, PrEP pills can have side effects long term. And distributing huge amounts of daily pills to remote areas of the globe is much harder than the patients getting a shot on their yearly medical visit.

> I'd also be curious to know if the combination of ART + the vaccine might cure someone of HIV. Which is also a pretty big deal.

"Cure" in the sense they could become indefinitely under detectable levels. It's worth noting that to really cure a person of HIV you'd need to remove all mutated cells.

lopis··on Magnolias are so old that they're pollinated by beetles, not bees (2025)
Right but do they pollinate significantly?
lopis··on Magnolias Are So Old That They're Pollinated by Beetles, Not Bees
Interesting. I never thought worker bees retained any mating instincts.
lopis··on Islamist terrorist attack in Berlin Pride event
There's almost no basis of truth in that comment, let alone sources.

Germany does not have "overseas territories", so not sure what they mean by that. There's nothing of the like happening within Germany either. Germany has a multi-generation muslim population, so purging them would mean purging Germans.

CSD is disruptive, yes, as are marathons and several demos and parades every year. In fact, Berlin CSD crosses mostly the Tiergarten where there are no buildings. But no matter how car-brained Germany is, no such event has been attacked by disgruntled drivers.

lopis··on How much energy do data centers and artificial intelligence use?
Sure, but it's still surprising that 1/3 of all data centers in the whole world are dedicated to that one use.
lopis··on How much energy do data centers and artificial intelligence use?
The author claims it's surprising that AI uses less electricity than the rest of data centers. Why?? Data centers do a million different things other than AI
lopis··on ScreenWall – Turn old phones into synced widgets for your space
So happy being able to buy a Fairphone. Have replaced the screen once, the battery twice, and the back twice too. Fairphone 4 on the its 5th year. I want to upgrade but this thing is really resilient.
lopis··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Lemmy's popularity comes in waves. I was hoping for the day that Reddit would shoot itself in the foot again, because Lemmy's traffic was going through a slump. I'm looking forward to a fresh new batch of new users, content and communities.
lopis··on A Koi Pond Mosaic Made from 10 Pounds of 3D Printer Waste
There's lots of YouTube carpeters that still do it in custom built tables. And these are very expensive custom builds too...
lopis··on I Stopped “Creating Content”
In a way, the YouTube channels I follow are like cable: they produce content of different genres and topics on a regular basis and serve it to me. There's another way to use YouTube, though: you can search for a video and find what you want exactly.

The way I use video is unlikely to be completely taken over by AI. Sure, producers might use some AI along the way, but people will continue valuing genuine programming, be it educational, comedy, news etc.

But I expect the second kind of content, the one you search for, to be mostly consumed by AI video and AI summaries as time goes on.

lopis··on A Koi Pond Mosaic Made from 10 Pounds of 3D Printer Waste
Like those "wood" tables that are 50% made of epoxy. It grinds my gears
lopis··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
Looks so nice and it's lots of fun. Great job!

With that said, I hope no one ever uses it, it's terrible.

lopis··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
Would also be trivial for the author to add a warning for users that have that setting enabled. Something like "Heads-up: you have requested reduced motion, and this library disabled animations as per your request"
lopis··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
AI should not be allowed in photos of products being sold, period. That's pure false advertising. Disclosing is not enough.
lopis··on Old Icons
That just adds to my confusion. Some like the chain icon are really small and have minimal detail. Others like the trashcan are huge, and definitely not as small as it could be while still conveying it's meaning clearly
lopis··on Old Icons
I think icons are nice, but using icons instead of labels, is a terrible design decision in principle. It might be acceptable for your power users, or if you know your project is only used by you and your household or something like that. My company just did this for mobile to save space. It's so confusing even though I use our product every day. Humans can read short labels faster than they can decipher icons.
lopis··on Old Icons
Nice project. The icon sizes seem a bit too inconsistent, but if that's what your projects need, I guess you must have your reasons.
lopis··on The lost joy of music piracy
> Streaming is how everyone consumes music these days

It's pretty dangerous to assume that what you do is what everyone else does too.

> so everything new gets released there

Previous comment was probably referring to older music.

lopis··on The lost joy of music piracy
Exactly. I mean sure, people were definitely pirating music. But lots of people are own huge collections of CDs, and you could also just borrow other people's CDs to rip them. We were kids without money, but older folks at the time did spend money on CDs.
lopis··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
That's fine, if that's your choice. Reddit was awesome at first because it was a hot pot of cultures. But we lost that control. You don't see what you want unless you fight hard against the algo.
lopis··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
Without getting into whether the price is fair, there's not much that can be done there. Lots of solar users are using the grid without paying otherwise, and there's a real grid cost.
lopis··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
That's a weirdly optimistic view of technology. Specially the comparison to homophobia and racism. Yes, tech has solved people's basic but real needs for communication, banking, entertainment, etc. Then after a certain level, without aggressive dark patterns, people's needs for tech were basically met. No one needed social media, we needed social networks. No one needed inescapable "algorithms"¹ besides the ones trying to screw us over. What is this "status quo" you're talking about? And what is this technology progress that is threatening it?

¹ using the term "algorithms" here in its colloquial non-tech sense.

lopis··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
Is that because Bankers have mostly disappeared as a profession people deal with in person?
lopis··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
This is probably showing both our ages that this is new to you and very old for me.
lopis··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
I don't have smart washers, but I did build a smart ESP32-based [0] zigbee numerical display. Then I use Home Assistant to send the current electricity price to that display when the price changes, and send a notification to all users' phones when electricity is cheap (< 0.05€/kWh) or expensive (> 0.15€/kWh). This helps me plan my laundry and dish washing, which are the only energy intensive appliances I have. I also try to avoid cooking complex meals in the stove+oven.

lopis··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
There's also the electricity transport costs. We're talking about the pure electricity cost here.
