loosetypes··on Godot maintainer removes controversial satirical piece from documentation
I’m imagining a world where writing the word “they” is banned.

As in: if you don’t have something “we” to say, don’t say anything at all.

loosetypes··on Lawrence Ferlinghetti has died
If you haven't been, Green Apple Books on Clement street is also great.
loosetypes··on Practical Color Theory for People Who Code (2016)
> to reveal color selection as being logical, predictable, and driven by principles anyone can learn.

In that regard, is there any sort of algebra for color compatibility to quantify legibility?

Specifically, say we have some text and change the background and font colors from default values.

When I do this, I generally have no sense for the color change’s impact on readability or if the contrast would hurt my eyes until I take a look at the output. Then when I make a slight change - has it gotten better or worse? It feels so murky.

I know there are more factors at play: font choice, font size, brightness of screen, etc. but does anyone know of a rough heuristic for or programmatic means of checking?

loosetypes··on Daft Punk Break Up
And it’s been continued, to an extent, by folks like Deadmau5 and Marshmello.

I wonder if any groups have stand ins ready to don the mantle for live performances if there were ever, for whatever reason, a double booking.

loosetypes··on Apparent hackers behind Kia ransomware attack demand millions in Bitcoin
Is it not the same with most aspects of software as consumption reaches economic critical mass?

Systems designed by and for users lose control to business interests.

Leading to streaming over media ownership, as we become renters in every domain.

Movies, shows, music, video games. “To improve the consumer experience” reads ever closer to “with DRM we can charge subscriptions in perpetuity (telemetry’s just a bonus!)”.

Why would I want or require internet to play a single player computer game? At least with cars, perhaps we’ll begin to see some pushback.

loosetypes··on New plant-based plastics can be chemically recycled with near-perfect efficiency
Agreed. If you print a dinosaur skull out of ABS, I wonder if the cast would survive longer than a real fossil.
loosetypes··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
Same. Perhaps a different time scale but I’ve considered doing this for files within a source code repository to better familiarize myself with the history.

One interesting feature might be to be able to select any two commits such that you could diff them in isolation.

loosetypes··on Blitz.js Now in Beta (Batteries Included Framework Built on Next.js)
Aha! Thanks

Now I’m certainly going to be trying Blitz.

loosetypes··on Blitz.js Now in Beta (Batteries Included Framework Built on Next.js)
Thanks. I’m referring more to a REPL environment for executing inline javascript against your project rather than a CLI of prebaked commands.

So something like creating an instance of an existing model definition and trying out its methods instead of CLI for running a database migration or generating a stubbed model definition.

loosetypes··on Blitz.js Now in Beta (Batteries Included Framework Built on Next.js)
In the spirit of Rails, does Blitz include a repl analogous to irb? Something that automatically loads in your models and maybe config?

It’s been a while since I’ve used Rails but that interactive environment was my favorite way to get familiar with activerecord models.

loosetypes··on 'Sexual favours were the norm in music industry'
You know how positive feedback loops exist in social media (in terms of engagement) with negative outcomes (whether for the user, society, ..)?

Maybe that’s following a YouTube rabbit hole and now you’re unintentionally watching flat earth or politically radicalizing videos. Maybe you internalize that content which you otherwise wouldn’t have consciously decided to watch had you not been led there.

A sibling comment refers to cancel culture as democratic. That would be great if it were deliberate and rational. But I wonder how much canceling stems from a similar, for example Twitter-centric, pipeline to the YouTube flow above?

Informed, justified, and deliberate canceling as the voice of the people sounds great and I would very much be behind that. But I worry that an increasing portion of the mob is comprised of people led to outrage not by choice but by social media dark patterns.

loosetypes··on Always Bet on Text (2014)
Context < Subtext < Plaintext

Cute, overly self congratulatory turns of word aside, this had me look up the etymology of text. I hadn’t put it together before, but woven is such a fitting root for the fabric of our thoughts made manifest.

loosetypes··on WHO scientists: NYT misquoted us to fit a prescribed narrative
Just to add to the list, Noam Chomsky has long maintained that the NYT has a very strong agenda regarding Israel which manifests in any and all related coverage.[1]

Such an idea ran contrary to my long held sentiment for the NYT as rational and unbiased but I am seeing it more and more.

[1] Chomsky writes about this in Understanding Power.

loosetypes··on Team lay-off
Shoot, my apologies - I should have checked before posting.
loosetypes··on Team lay-off
I recall hearing of Stripe recruiting in groups, perhaps others have followed suit since?

Best to all those affected.

loosetypes··on How The Expanse went from game concept to blockbuster TV series
I’m not a book reader and agree, although I’m only three episodes into season 5.

Amos was one of my favorite characters but am a bit put off by how his role has, to an extent, become fan service.

I appreciate that he’s a tough guy, enjoyed that aspect of earlier seasons, and want more of it. But don’t give me, the viewer, instant gratification just because I want it if it will erode my suspension of disbelief.

Feels like the characters and narratives are trending towards more traditionally defined arcs with characters getting in fights to show the audience they’re invincible or otherwise saved by cheap deus ex machina tricks.

loosetypes··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
> the idea didn't grow over time

I always find retrospective and hypothetical discussions of idea genesis and maturation fascinating.

Amazon retail aside, I wonder if you (or anyone else) would be willing to give perspective on AWS:

Was it similarly fully formed on conception?

I’ve heard the (potentially stylized) stories about holiday traffic bursts, selling off-season compute to startups, etc.

But assuming AWS the idea did need to grow with increased perspective, the times, and experience - do you think AWS could have become what it is today if that had been the goal from the onset?

loosetypes··on It Feels Like the Game Is Rigged
I recently learned the term OPM (other peoples’ money).

As in, it’s preferable to invest OPM. Could that be the definition of a hedge fund?

And in that regard, it’s basically the opposite of the ideals many of us are intimately familiar with - such as having “skin in the game”.

To share in winnings yet be insulated from losses must change one’s incentives and potentially reframe what “risky” means in practice.

loosetypes··on Most of the time, you don’t really need another MOOC
Oh wow, this could be interesting for discussing system architecture or database schema designs before committing a large chunk of time to an implementating a solo project.

If it’s something you’ll spend a significant amount of time building that could be well worth the price.

loosetypes··on GameStop Is Rage Against the Financial Machine

loosetypes··on Ask HN: What laptop should I buy in 2021?
How are the touch pads on system76 laptops?

I’m pleased with just about every aspect of running Ubuntu on a dell XPS except that one.

loosetypes··on Experienced well-being rises with income, even above $75,000 per year
This reads similarly to me as conversations that justify medical bills being so high in the US when there’s a closed loop between the those charging and those paying (ie, not the one receiving medical care). “You should be thankful that we saved you 99.5% of this artificially high price tag even though we’re complicit in its fantasy pricing!”

Medical service doesn’t exist for the industry on top of it. Housing doesn’t exist for the industry built on top of it. I wish our government considered the well-being of the host nearly as much as the parasites rather than asking Mr. Mosquito what he thinks would be beneficial.

loosetypes··on WhatsApp delays privacy changes following backlash
For maybe the first time I can recall I wasn’t able to locate a webpage via google search yesterday.

(Described in my last comment if anyone knows the source)

Seemed like every attempt to better describe it as a query took me further from what I was looking for.

Results were all (from my perspective) SEO hijacking, clearly having nothing to do with my search. And that was behind the wall of advertisements and their own google cards of noise they plug up front. Going to the next page of results was surprisingly difficult.

First time I’ve considered, maybe this is the wrong tool for traversing the memory palace of one’s interactions with the internet.

loosetypes··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
Bit unrelated, but I recall an old webpage that had a grid of 10 or so YouTube videos embedded, each with a different instrument playing (they didn’t auto play).

This was pre-mobile, so it was expected that you could play multiple videos at once. I was amazed, and it was the intent, that independent of how few or many videos you played and no matter when you started each of them, all sounds blended together nicely.

I don’t know what to call it when there’s no inter-sound coordination - a timing independent harmony? It was so cool.

Anyways, I would be super interested in attending a zoom concept of that sort that might side step some technical difficulties.

loosetypes··on Ask HN: Are there experienced (co) Founders looking for new ventures to start?
I don’t disagree but sometimes single player rational behavior can be eclipsed when weighing in complicit factors.

I used to (and still do) think it would be absurd to buy a house in a neighborhood you’re not first-hand familiar with. Ideally, you’ve lived there before or rent to get a feel for it. And buying a house sight unseen - I would never!

But looking around you see how common this behavior is.

Increasingly people purchase cars without test driving as well, it seems.

When the price is right and the outcome isn’t permanent. When it’s to satisfy family or business interests.

I imagine a lot of what I’d consider financially sensible could actually lose me money if I were in a different situation. Perhaps this category of trade offs could be germane in choosing a business partner.

loosetypes··on Central Spain records temperatures of -25°C after snowstorm
These same areas have also seen increasingly warmer summers in recent times, right?

While it may be hard to speculate short and long term regional changes, does anyone have a recommendations for interactive tools to explore, say, monthly temperatures for a given area for the past however many years?

loosetypes··on India’s “plantain man” has traveled widely to collect unusual banana varieties
In Haiti there’s over 150 varieties of mango.

I’ve eaten maybe ten distinct kinds[0]. Not only are they visually distinct but, as you’d imagine, unique in taste as well.

Made me feel like my sense of “mango” to that point in my life was nothing more than cherry flavored syrup.

[0] Ti Kouzin might be my favorite!

loosetypes··on Citing 'Censorship' Concerns, North Idaho ISP Blocks Facebook, Twitter
Curious about some of the would be logistics here.

This would’ve just been for web browsers pointing directly to facebook’s website, right?

Not necessarily other Facebook-owned companies?

What about Facebook ads/tracking on the pages of Facebook customers?

loosetypes··on The Impractical but Indisputable Rise of Retrocomputing
Probably doesn’t quite count as retro, but I recently purchased a mini PC pretty much exclusively to play Diablo 2 single player.

Prices were quite low so I wanted to make sure the specs were adequate. Looking into it, I got a laugh that the game requirements were less than Windows 10 itself.
