loorinm··on Fritz Haber: A Monster Who Fed the World
What an insane and fascinating read. Two things occured to me:

I don’t really understand how and why war happens. Like, it starts out as two parties both wanting the same resource, and then somebody says “over my dead body” or something and then a million other people decide to also join in this fight? I do not get it.

The other thing is : The “inherent harm of technology”. Every single advancement will 100% hurt someone. In this case it hurt a lot of people. But it’s impossible to stop progress, even if you keep a discovery secret for a while, it won’t last. Humanity will advance, and somewhat destroy itself in the process.

Therein lies the flaw in the democracy.

loorinm··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory
“it’s like having an old man pee on your face one trickle at a time. I’d rather have it over with quickly and go wash up.”

I think we’ve all been there.

loorinm··on Successfully lending without creditor rights, collateral, or reputation [pdf]
The first 7 pages of this was an absolutely fascinating read.

TLDR; In 1800s China, they had “student loans” for aspiring government officials. The caveat was these officials had to hire a “trusted assistant” into their administration, supplied by the bank. This assistant both ran the province and enforced repayment of the loan. These assistants were also seasoned governing pros. Even though the officials were less experienced, these loans ended up paying the banks greater returns.

Moral of the story: I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks. Let’s make lots of money.

loorinm··on The Evolution of Petface
Just need a sheep farm first.
loorinm··on The Evolution of Petface
I find it very interesting that so many people find these mutant dogs cute.

Generally humans find health and intelligence attractive, but for some reason this breaks down when it comes to pets.

My dream is to own an Australian cattle dog. They look like a buff dingo crossed with a raccoon. 100% would survive the apocalypse.

loorinm··on Bay Area mass exodus of residents leading to a shortage of U-Haul trucks
I had the same thought regarding age as it relates to truck rental. Which kind of makes this article either really really stupid or intentionally misleading.

Fine by me
loorinm··on “The effects of lifelong exposure to a perverse contingency” (2002)
I had to read it a few times . Mind Blown.
loorinm··on The Most Educated Countries in the World (Canada, Japan, Israel; US 6th)
So, the statistic is counting people who were educated elsewhere and then moved to the US afterward. Essentially letting the US take credit for other countries' educational programs.

I think if we just counted the average education level of people who grew up in the US it would be much lower.

The US attracts educated people from all over the world, but it does not do much to educate the majority of its own people.

loorinm··on Why Toys?
Bitching and doing something are not mutually exclusive activities.

Some successful people being from poor upbringings does not make it commonplace.

If your claims were true, by definition we would not have inequality.

loorinm··on Why Toys?
I don't know if maybe you think capitalism is the only reason people don't just lie in bed all day, but theory has been soundly disproven.
loorinm··on Why Toys?
Yes. And clubs like YC reward those who have had extra chances for their whole lives. While the lower-class kids help their parents, the better-off kids are getting tutoring, music classes, and expensive toys to grow their skills and do better later on.
loorinm··on Why Toys?
To solve inequality?? I don’t think that’s the business YC is in.

But we can do a lot. We can drastically reduce the potential financial rewards for extracting value from millions of people.

We can set a max income of $300k per person and the rest goes to elevating the poor.

It would pretty much destroy the VC industry though.

loorinm··on Why Toys?
I am directly responding to above person’s claim that this practice by YC is somehow solving the very problem it is creating.

At no point did I claim that everything has to solve inequality.

loorinm··on Why Toys?
Cute title but this is actually just an extension of “the rich get richer while the poor get poorer”.

Facebook had TIME to be a toy because Mark Zuckerberg had a rich family, and plenty of skills to get a job if it didn’t work out.

“Making a toy” is only possible with the resources of money and time.

People who need to make money need to focus earlier on making money, which stunts growth in the long run.

This is true not only for startups but for individuals, and in nature as a whole.

It often feels like 99% of “startup wisdom” comes down to “have a rich family that supported you emotionally and then paid for your college, and then let you start a company at their house for free”

YC should give a talk at some underprivileged schools in crime-ridden areas to tell people to “just make toys for like 9 years guys”

loorinm··on A radical idea to improve family life in America: babysit your neighbor’s kids
There are probably too many variables for us to speculate "what would have happened" in this situation.

My comment is this: Generally and overwhelmingly, when a group of people is more interconnected and those connections are stronger, "bad" behavior gets found out and stopped faster. I think that's true of any group of people.

Of course, "bad" = unacceptable to the group itself.

Someone telling you "I did this bad thing" is not the only way for you to find out. I think if a child knows there is a way out, that there other people who care enough to take effective action, they might be more likely to tell someone. But often there is no one who cares that much. Teachers, neighbors, other parents, they're all "nice" but they aren't invested.

What I'm talking about is a deep relationship, and that isn't a function of time spent together, or any other concrete fact. It's organic and emotional.

We can grow those relationships if we choose to. I feel this is the only way to actually solve a lot of social problems that have been going on for decades now. Shooters, internet trolling, bullying, abuse, molestation, those people who pop up every year or so who have been hiding 15 children in a basement..etc

loorinm··on Genetics Dominate Environmental Influences on Self-Control in Children
I'm sorry but the title itself is fundamentally illogical and scientifically invalid. I haven't clicked the link so maybe it's just a bad title...

Environmental factors can never truly be accounted for or dismissed, and we will never have a fully controlled study of people to where we can separate nature and nurture.

loorinm··on A radical idea to improve family life in America: babysit your neighbor’s kids
That's one interpretation.

What if you or other neighbors had been even friendlier, sooner. You may have found out about it sooner and been able to help stop it.

loorinm··on Virtual Reality Readies Some Prisoners for Release
It honestly doesn’t matter what the crime or the age is. The fact that we respond by spending years producing socially disabled people, and then send them back out into the world... How can this be happening. In whose interest can this possibly be?
loorinm··on Virtual Reality Readies Some Prisoners for Release
> Gardenhire is among a group of inmates who have lived behind bars since they were children--never thinking that one day they’d be let out. They’ve never used a debit card or a cell phone. Many haven’t ever done their own laundry or driven a car.

I fucking hate this country. Why are we still doing this. Why is this ok. The people responsible for the continuation of this system should be made to live out the rest of their lives in the prisons they designed.

loorinm··on Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore
Many possibilities:

- gain the remainder of users who perhaps can afford a bike ride but not an uber to their destination

- gather bike-specific data which could immensely improve safety for autonomous vehicles

- improve their horrible image by aligning themselves with environmentally-friendly and traffic-alleviating transit

- bikes are fully automated and require no troublesome humans to keep the system going. Uber drivers a big hassle for Uber.

- optimizing a bike rental system is a training ground for running an autonomous car rental system

Just off the top of my head..

loorinm··on SF tourist industry struggles to explain street misery to horrified visitors
It actually seems plausible that SF might have the worst homeless problem as a direct result of actually doing the most to help the homeless.

SF literally gets punished, the better job they do.

As they provide services, the city only attracts and retains a bigger and bigger population who become accustomed to relying on just enough services to continue living on the streets.

San Francisco is creating its own problem here due to its own altruism.

loorinm··on SF tourist industry struggles to explain street misery to horrified visitors
"30k spending per person" does not mean each homeless person gets 30k. This money goes to all the workers who go through papers, work at shelters, office people to write papers to try to get more money from the federal government, and all sorts of other bureaucracy.

Almost none of it goes to the homeless people themselves.

loorinm··on SF tourist industry struggles to explain street misery to horrified visitors
Yup! You got it.
loorinm··on SF tourist industry struggles to explain street misery to horrified visitors
I'm tired of all the "How can they let this happen?!?!" as if we don't know how capitalism works.

"Political will" is just code for financial incentive.

The fact that this problem isn't being solved, tells us very clearly that this isn't actually a problem for the majority of the city's income.

The tech industry is strong enough that people will still show up to collect their $120k salaries, even if they have to step over people and feces to do that.

Obviously tourism must not be a big income for the city. Which is why no one cares what "Mr. Hotel owner" has to say.

SF will continue to become a tech dystopia, because no one comes to San Francisco to stay or to make a home or a community. Everyone is passing through, there to make their fortune in tech, and then leave. No one has kids there. That's why this isn't solved. San Francisco is not a community. Until it is, this problem will never go away.

The recent shady "election" of the new mayor - a white male tech VC, would seem to support this. Apparently a black woman who was willing to go along with the rich white men wasn't enough.

loorinm··on Tesla employees say Gigafactory problems worse than known

loorinm··on Why it costs so much to be poor in America
The boots is just the beginning. Through financial products, the rich actually get paid simply for having money, while the banks charge fees to customers simply for being poor.

Banks charging customers simply for being pior is just the tip of the iceberg of how our society is designed to increase the stratification of rich and poor.

The more you already have, the more you can make money just by having more than other people. It’s exponential increases on returns the richer you get.

The poorer you get the harder it is to make even slight progress toward bettering your situation.

But we as “normal people” are to blame for this. We all agree to play by the rules of a few mentally ill sociopaths and that’s really on us.

loorinm··on Waze Carpool
If this is the logic behind Waze Carpool, they are SERIOUSLY misguided. If I own a car and and I’m driving to work, my privacy and security during my commute is worth a lot more than $5. No way I’m picking up randos and sitting in silence with them for an hour for a measly coffee.
