longstation··on Developer of aluminum-ion battery claims it charges faster than lithium-ion
I happened to read the same information but reported by another publisher [1]. In that article, it points out that the energy density is only 60% of a traditional lithium-ion cell, but that disadvantage is offset by not having to use much cooling device like the lithium-ion ones.

The same information is represented pretty differently in this article, leading people to believe the energy density is better:

"The new battery cells are claimed to deliver far more energy density than current lithium-ion batteries, without the cooling, heating or rare-earth problems they face."

Still, I think is an encouraging news and I really love, just not quite a fan of the way they present it.

longstation··on GCC Rust Monthly Report #6 May 2021
Great work! Does any know if this new frontend will improve rust compilation time?
longstation··on First Public Working Drafts: WebGPU and WebGPU Shading Language
Saved in my note, much appreciated.

Yes, I agree building a UI library from scratch is hard and probably not worthy doing (too many people tried and gave up in the middle; probably better to channel that enthusiasm on improving existing ones). I should state that more clearly. I was looking at something more modest, like a canvas implementation based on wgpu that enables others to build their UI libraries on top.

I guess it would be something like Skia, but it also sounds like a tremendous effort, and I could probably just use Skia instead. However, I guess I am not going to match what Skia has (maybe what HTML canvas has is enough?). Also, I have played with skia-safe crate but I personally feel the dev experience could be better (not to blame skia-safe, it's wonderful and even provides a build process that automatically downloads a precompiled skia library).

Thanks for pointing out Iced. I didn't know they are using wgpu under the hood. I will take a good look at their code. I have been reading nannou's code to learn how to work with wgpu. If we skip my last paragraph, I think building a UI library on top of nannou is pretty doable.

longstation··on First Public Working Drafts: WebGPU and WebGPU Shading Language
I see. Thank you for the detailed information. I will read the linked content.

I don't know if this is a good place to ask. But I was interested in wgpu because of the interest in building a cross-platform non-web UI library. I read a few of your articles and also looked at druid. I am pretty new to it and there seems to be no books on this topic. Do you have any recommendations?

longstation··on First Public Working Drafts: WebGPU and WebGPU Shading Language
I haven't. I didn't realize the move. Looks like I need to find some new learning material. BTW, do you know any up-to-date tutorials?
longstation··on First Public Working Drafts: WebGPU and WebGPU Shading Language
Could someone correct me? I am pretty new to graphics programing but I was learning wgpu (the Rust binding of WebGPU) the other day. I was under the impression that the shader language is GLSL (version 450) and it is then converted into SPIR-V.

Would those limitations still apply with SPIR-V?

longstation··on Gnome 40
I just want to mention, if you feel there's some excessive padding and it's a waste of space (especially vertically), I suggest you take a look at a compact theme at GNOME Look.

Currently, not all themes work properly with GTK 4, but they will eventually get there. Personally, I use the Mojave-gtk-theme. It wastes no space and is beautifully designed.

longstation··on Budgie Is Worth a Try
Too late to the party, but just want to mention Enlightenment DE (a nice DE also worth trying) since you mentioned EFL.
longstation··on GTK4 for Graphical User Interfaces
It's great that the author promotes both Nim and GTK4, which, in my opinion, are both great opensource projects. But I think the author should make it clear that he disabled text anti-aliasing for some reason. A lot of people in this thread are complaining how bad the text rendering is. As someone who uses GNOME (build with GTK) for years, I want to make it clear: GTK supports both anti-aliasing and hinting. The text rendering looks great! It's really just one web search away to check the effects.
longstation··on Nim in 2020: A Short Recap
I think this is a very good idea but it may depend on what you are doing. For example, if you are using Nim to talk to some C library, I believe you won't be able to compile the C part into JS for debugging (even if you are not debugging the C part of course).
longstation··on Winamp Skins Collection
Does anyone know what kind of UI library Winamp uses? I mean, if it's opensource, we can probably use it to build a lot more fun UIs since it's so "skinable".

Not a kernel expert, but I am curious, couldn't we load that AMD driver conditionally?
longstation··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
I had the same issue with YouTube ads on mobile. There's an open source YouTube app called Vanced (yes, with out "Ad") which runs exactly like the official YouTube app but you have the choice to turn off ads.

Would having a decentralized repository be a good idea (one that is not subject to this kind of corporate/political issue)?
longstation··on DoChat – a Dockerized WeChat PC Windows client for Linux
This is a docker image of the WeChat Windows client running on Wine. I think it would be reasonable for the author to at least put some credit to the Wine projet in his project page. Instead, I have to check the Dockerfile to see how it works.

Also, the screenshot in the project page shows people's conversation and name (probably the author's), but it would again be nice if we could blur the content so that people's privacy got respected (yes, you could argue that since you are already running WeChat, you don't care about privacy).

longstation··on Qt Binding for Go with Support Desktop, Mobile and Embeddable
Would you elaborate on the size of QT? I searched and found this link ([1]) that suggests when done right, the QT part is about 20MB.

I am asking this because sometimes people have different idea on what is accounted for being big.
