lolsal··on Apple Music is the last library focused music service
I don't know about all that - I can easily look back at my music library and browse through what I listened to 2 years ago. That is nearly impossible on Spotify (I assume on purpose).
lolsal··on Is the four-day workweek finally within our grasp?
I would urge you to reconsider your work/life balance. Trading 10 months for 2 seems like a poor trade. A 4 day work week automatically gets you 52 extra days a year. If you have flexibility in the day of the week, it's very compelling.
lolsal··on Apple Music is the last library focused music service
I do this! It's great, but discoverability/brows-ability is lost.
lolsal··on Apple Music is the last library focused music service
The more I use a streaming music service like Spotify, the more new music I find, but the shorter my musical memory becomes.
lolsal··on Is the four-day workweek finally within our grasp?
Life happens outside of two months a year, though.

> I'd never hire a full time employee who can work remotely. I'd employ a contractor who has to itemize their invoice.

I'm just curious as I've been the employer and the contractor in this scenario - do you think the output between a FTE and a contractor would be different? Do you think it would be different financially?

In my experience, developers tend to behave like a gas that expands to fill their container - people tend to work up to their compensation (whether it's hourly contracting or some form of salary + comp), and no more.

Your BS detector tripped because of a bias you have about who has two months of salary saved up?

Other alarm bells should be going off for you.

lolsal··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
The internet is bigger and contains more information than ever before.

You can't passively explore. You can't go to one or two sites and just consume a feed.

Think of interests you have, things you are curious about, cultures you want to know more about - and seek those out. That is what exploring is: navigating the unknown.

lolsal··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
> And businesses making their own employment choices.

Does this include a federal government vaccine mandate?

> Vaccine mandates are nothing new - I was required to get vaccinated to go to my public school.

An appeal to tradition/authority doesn't make it any more tenable. The anti-mandate position is precisely (at least in part) that they should have autonomy over their own body.

> You literally said the "best" choice is relative. Your entire stance is deeply relativistic at its core.

You're having a discussion with two different people. The comment you're responding to was not me. We are making different points.

lolsal··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
You don't have to buy it, that's what moral relativism implies.

Ultimately I think you're arguing that the greater public good invalidates personal freedom and body autonomy. I disagree with you, as many others would as well.

lolsal··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
> You've got to be in a serious intellectual bubble to be thinking that most people are carefully considering the options and making the best choices for themselves

It's risky to dismiss people that make different choices than you as idiots not being able to make the best choices for themselves. 'Best' here is entirely relative.

For example, I know (in real life), folks that are making the choice to not submit to vaccine mandates because that aligns with their principals which is a preferred choice for them than surviving into old age. It is utter arrogance to argue they are not making the best choice for themselves.

lolsal··on Covid lesson: trust the public with hard truths
They are not exclusive.
lolsal··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
I understand and that's fine. I don't actually care about where you work in this context.

Human Rights are special things. They aren't preferences. The more you conflate the two, the more you erode your position and the term 'human right' in general. I would urge you to stop doing that.

lolsal··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
> I wouldn't even consider working for a company that didn't offer that as an unquestionable human right,

I don't think things you prefer automatically get elevated to 'unquestionable human rights'.

lolsal··on New USB-C logos make picking USB cables, chargers less confusing
The cable is not Apple's fault. One of the reasons I like the Apple ecosystem is that I trust that they protect me from insanity like this. It's probably inevitable that they go all-in on USB in some form or fashion, but I hope they resist until it's impossible for me to *destroy my hardware* by plugging in a cable.
lolsal··on Smokers were never protected from Covid
The article doesn't seem to specify any difference between plain tobacco, consumer cigarette, or marijuana smokers. The [linked study](https://thorax.bmj.com/content/early/2021/09/12/thoraxjnl-20...) doesn't seem to clarify, either.

I'm curious if there is a difference between the three.

lolsal··on New USB-C logos make picking USB cables, chargers less confusing
I share this opinion. I'm deep in the Apple camp but it never bothered me that they didn't jump on USB standards. They are a complete mess and if I plugged a shoddy cable into my device and fried it I would be super pissed at Apple for putting me in a position to make that mistake.

I don't charge my recent generation MacBook with anything other than the Apple charger for this exact reason.

lolsal··on New USB-C logos make picking USB cables, chargers less confusing
What is stopping the cheap knockoffs from putting these logos on cables and devices that don't actually meet the specifications? A logo that says "certified" doesn't actually mean anything.
