lolo_··on Has modern Linux lost its way? Some thoughts on Jessie
I was using Arch with gnome and the main issue was text size for certain applications, in particular at the time no chrome build, not even dev tip would render text in menus etc. at a non-tiny size (though I could zoom websites and get nice retina graphics)

I've now switched to having a dedicated linux desktop and just letting my mac continue to just be a mac for now. After many hours of effort there's a point where you wonder if it's worth it. I want to contribute to the linux kernel, so feel I should live in linux too, the desktop is my solution to this (if a bit extreme!)

Which offer of help? :) I am really undecided on the systemd thing. I read terrible diatribes against it, but a friend recently pointed me towards an article which contradicts many of these points - http://0pointer.net/blog/projects/the-biggest-myths.html. the reality is it's a lot faster for sure all other concerns aside. I'm glad arch defaults to using it as a user :)

How have you found it with retina? When I tried this, the retina support, particularly with chrome, was poor enough to make me switch back to OS X
lolo_··on Show HN: Resin.io – Push Updates to Linux Devices with Git and Docker
As you rightly say, with Docker any language can be used, so it's certainly possible to use Erlang!
lolo_··on Chrome for Mac 64-bit Support
I just checked chrome://chrome for updates and it confirmed there was no update and 38 was the latest, but when I re-downloaded chrome from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/ it was the 64-bit v39 - so yes you do need to install a new version!
lolo_··on OS X 10.10 – Source Code
Not sure they're releasing any OS code publicly though :-) internals still have to be somewhat guessed/reverse engineered at.
lolo_··on Most People with Addiction Simply Grow Out of It
Actually nicotine is apparently not the addictive part of smoking, rather other chemicals in tobacco are.

Anecdotally I can confirm I've smoked e-cigarettes quite heavily for a few months then stopped cold turkey and had zero withdrawal or cravings, but I occasionally feel a desire for smoking a cigar quite strongly despite having them at a rate averaging a few a year.

EDIT: Not majorly addictive, rather than not addictive at all.

lolo_··on A Long, Ugly Year of Depression That’s Finally Fading
I get frustrated with advice like this - there have been periods where I've gone to the gym 5 times a week and had it have no affect on my emotional state whatsoever.

Moderate Depression is literally a different disease from severe depression. Don't assume what helps one will have the slightest affect on the other.

On the women thing - I lost huge amounts of weight after a massive diet and exercise regime and it... made no difference at all. I'm 5'5" therefore an untouchable as far as they're concerned (just google around on male height + dating if you don't believe me, I'm tired of arguing as to why this is the case people tend not to want to believe it.)

I think this side of things would make a difference with women, however, if you have no obvious flaws so for normal dudes it's applicable. But don't think it will necessarily have an impact on the depression. Severe depressives should see their doctor and try to get outside help.

lolo_··on Docker 1.0
> * GO Lang is still pretty obscure for most developers, and an interesting choice given the language's youth and likely-hood to change rapidly as it matures.

The go authors have committed to keeping major versions stable since v1 and are unlikely to massively change anything.

I'm sure much of google's infrastructure is coming to rely on go (and docker!) so they will be as unhappy about such drastic change as others.

lolo_··on WebGL on iOS8 Safari and WebView
Ack. That is seriously disappointing.
lolo_··on WebGL on iOS8 Safari and WebView
Apparently that's fixed in iOS8 :)

lolo_··on OS X 10.9.3 Is Toxic
I've had issues with freezes for a while pre 10.9.3 too. These obviously don't generate panic files so are more of a pain to try to debug.

Also I recently installed refind (http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/) to dual-boot linux and have experienced a lot of issues as a result of that (separate to the aforementioned freezing issues.)

At least this guy has actual kernel panics :)

lolo_··on The Truth on OpenGL Driver Quality
Not to stray too off topic but what does TDR stand for? :)
lolo_··on Illustrated Sorting Algorithms
Very nice indeed.

I did a basic hack on a sorting visualisation a while ago [0] and have felt for a long time there is a lot more possible with algorithm visualisation in general than has been done in the past. Hopefully we see lots more awesome stuff like this in the future :)

lolo_··on Programming paradigms that change how you think about coding
I think an underrated non-standard approach to programming is graphical programming. Though this approach doesn't seem to received significant uptake amongst professional programmers, there is an application called max [0] that is popular amongst musicians and artists and quite surprisingly powerful and effective.

There's an interesting article [1] on how Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead uses it extensively, in there you can see some examples of how it works - modules wired together visually.

I think there is a lot of potential for a really nice mix between text-based programming and graphical programming to work for general programming too.

lolo_··on Austin Police Department Warns SXSW Attendees Not To Use Uber
We called cabs and got no response at all, not even a 45 min wait - I mean sure this could be a thing that is just a major difference between the UK + US, and of course different because of the heavy loading of SxSW, but the point is I don't think it's naive of me to think that'd be possible :)

Yes the people here are really amazingly nice. That is my abiding memory of this experience!

lolo_··on Austin Police Department Warns SXSW Attendees Not To Use Uber
I don't think being able to catch a cab, at all, is a 'big-city amenity'.

Also keep in mind Austin is one of the biggest growing cities in the entire US.

etc. I could keep on arguing the point, but I nuked my previous account on here because of petty negativity like this, so I'd rather not.

Thankfully everybody I've met in person here has been incredibly friendly and hospitable which has left a big impression on me about Austin and the US in general. I will take that as my example, not this mean-spirited comment.

lolo_··on Austin Police Department Warns SXSW Attendees Not To Use Uber
We (me + colleague) are at SxSW now (over from the UK) - this is quite amazing given the utter lack of cabs if you're anywhere resembling out-of-downtown. Thankfully we have through an amazing friend of a friend procured the services of a friendly cab driver who goes out of his way to help us, without which we'd basically have to stay at our residence the whole time and not do SxSW at all.

Yikes.

lolo_··on Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
Don't bags that belong to passengers who don't embark get taken off the plane as a standard security measure?
lolo_··on Download Atom editor without an invite
The gist seems to be down, anybody take a copy of the contents?
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Where I work we use tabs; has carried over to my personal projects some. Personally I prefer spaces ;-)
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Thanks! That's very kind of you :)

Yeah indeed, well, hsl with varying hue and set saturation + luminescence - see https://github.com/lorenzo-stoakes/Rainbow-Sort/blob/master/....

I experimented with RGB and it really didn't work, HS(B/L) work a million times better. Took a bit of trial and error!

lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Wow nice, love your work!
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Insert[ion] sort is already in there, heap sort is definitely high on the list!
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Damn, I'm really sorry about that - I didn't think of that issue - perhaps a mod could add a warning of some kind?
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
I really need to jump back into the code, not looked at it for a while and take a look at improving how 'fairly' it benchmarks the algorithms. That's an interesting suggestion, will experiment with it.

Thanks for your kind comment on the code qual :) personally I only see the faults, for one I am sure I could improve perf... year-old code is often that way however! :)

lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Yeah, I think I need to review this code + make it 'fairer' or at least somewhat smoother. The positive reaction here has motivated me to hack on this project again!
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Yeah, I will probably work on fixing that :) quick hack, etc. etc.
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Ha yeah, sorry about that! Quick hack, etc. etc.
lolo_··on Rainbow Sort Visualisations
Yeah, I am kidding - don't worry I won't, I can imagine that getting pretty irritating :P

I did this as a quick hack on a whim about a year ago (was a visualisation I wanted to see but couldn't find one quite like this), I am pleasantly surprised by the positivity on this (I kinda posted it on a whim), so I think I will probably hack on it again :-)

It's tempting to code up a whole bunch of sorting algorithms, merge and heap sort are definitely high on the list.
