logotype··on 'Do Not Split': A Hong Kong protest film [video]
Agreed. I made a personal decision years ago, never to buy any Made in China products. There’s always better alternatives, of higher quality and also by supporting local manufacturers.
logotype··on 'Do Not Split': A Hong Kong protest film [video]
The articles you are referring to doesn’t show the full picture. In all protests only a part of the crowd is visible on the streets, the majority of the day is spent trying to get up to the streets from the MTR.

It is not an exaggeration. I was there, joining several protests including the CHRF 2M protest. In addition, the police estimates is always wrong (of course they want the numbers to be as low as possible). One example was a protest around Victoria Park. According to “official police figures” it was 180k attending - but they only counted the people in the limited Victoria Park square, it was completely PACKED. They didn’t count the hundreds of thousands of people outside the square who couldn’t fit in, they also didn’t count the people stuck in the MTR next to the park, who couldn’t even fit on the streets. The “official police statistics” is always off by a magnitude of x.
logotype··on EU vaccine rollout severely lags behind
That’s absurd. On the contrary, we should work closer with our ally USA, increase trade and more cooperation. We should completely decouple from China and stop trade from there, and restart domestic manufacturing.

Funny that you mention Renaissance, which happens to be the name of one of the major HFT firms, Renaissance Technologies
logotype··on US ends era of emotional support animals on planes
The flight was from Hong Kong, the cargo company is Jardine Airport Services, operating for IAG Cargo which handles pet cargo for British Airways. Like I mentioned, everything went fine, but this isn’t how it should be. We should be able to fly with our pets in the cabin. Our dog is our family member!
logotype··on US ends era of emotional support animals on planes
We recently relocated with our dog on a 13 hour flight. Everything went well and our dog is happy. But the process of flying with our pet is absolutely horrible. First of all, our only option was to let the dog fly in cargo. Extremely expensive (5000 USD). It’s also stressful for our dog to be in the crate in a noisy environment during “check-in” at the cargo company, sending the dog through an industrial x-ray machine, didn’t seem safe at all! The dogs are really handled like any cargo package, getting picked up by forklifts and placed to wait for extended periods of time. The only alternative option for us would be to charter a private yet, then our dog can fly in the cabin. But the price is prohibitive.

Why not the other way around? Drill into the earths core and simply dump it there.

logotype··on US, Taiwan seek 'like-minded' democracies in supply chain shift from China
Don’t buy things from China. Vote with your wallet. I’ve personally done this for the past year or two. At least to the extent that it is possible. Would love to see a USA made mobile phone though.

If you’re in Terminal and want to open a Finder window with the current path, just type “open .”
logotype··on “Adobe Flash is no longer supported in Safari”
13 years ago I was working on a project for IKEA, a room planner. We used Flash and it was a seriously ambitious project. The level of interactivity that was possible when using Flash was unrivalled for a long time. It appears that most of these type of “sites” has been replaced by native apps, even though the web platform has most of the required capabilities now. Flash was fun to develop with, as everything was well integrated and just worked, and pioneered many of the technologies we now see as part of the web platform APIs. A lot of the criticisms of Flash is due to shitty timeline-based banners which used up the CPU. You could definitively make efficient, fast performing apps/sites using Flash/AS3 if you knew what you were doing. Of course I moved on to JS/TS development, but it isn’t as fun.

logotype··on Ask HN: Why did you leave the tech industry?
I’m 38 and working as a developer at a well-known investment bank. I’ve been thinking of running my own specialty coffee shop. Been working as a developer for my whole life (front-end primarily). The day to day work is okay, and the problems are challenging. Definitely not working on mundane CRUD apps, but still it isn’t as fun as it used to be in the past. I started with programming because I found it rewarding to build things, to master the art. But programming today has switched from being a “master of tools” to “master of change”.
logotype··on What to do if you’re stopped by the police
These tips does not work in Hong Kong. Police can do whatever they want without any accountability. One officer even drove into a crowd of people, was put on paid leave and back at work a month after. Horrible!

logotype··on What happens to tech workers when their skills become obsolete?
Started with web, was impressed by what flash could do and learned that. Worked in advertising and we really pushed Flash to the limit (FWA, etc). I mean actual Flash apps, close to the structure of today’s React apps. Software 3D back then, but Stage3D arrived too late. Adobe AIR had potential but Adobe didn’t push enough for this tech. Then I went back to web app development and today I work at an investment bank making trading apps.

logotype··on Timex Is Making Watches in America Again
I’m a developer and a total watch nerd (mechanical watches). Partly what attracts me to watches is the micro-mechanics, but also how it’s a mix of artistry, craftmanship and old technology and know-how. I often post on Instagram, please have a look and hope you like the content: https://www.instagram.com/openworked/
