logical_proof··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Let me introduce you to the Star Wars Customizable Card Game by Decipher. It lasted from 1995 until 2001 when Lucasfilm sold toy rights to… Hasbro. Hasbro made a terrible card game to replace it for Episode 2 that has fallen into obscurity. The original game still lives on with a Players Committee and new virtual sets. Compared to Magic the game was a niche of a niche and still exists. If magic ever ‘dies’ I am sure there will be a huge community that steps up to keep it alive.

I am also curious as to how. I have been using CTRL-c for quite some time and even remapped sublime vintage mode to use it on Windows when I am. It using Vim.

logical_proof··on Ian Fleming explains how to write a thriller (2019)
You’re the first person I have heard that from. We’re there any plots in particular that you thought were worse (barring man with the golden gun as that was contrived and I am not sure if Fleming even truly finished it before his death)?
logical_proof··on Woodworking through the mind of an engineer
Don’t act like re-toothing a crosscut saw is some easy process and everyone has all the tools available :) at a minimum you need the correct needle files, a saw set, a bastard file, some kind of vice preferably a saw vice, and the skill on what pitch and yaw to file at. Hand saw sharpening like most woodworking is a lovely ‘rabbet’ hole.

Edit: this was meant as a bit of tip of the hat to anyone who can sharpen a crosscut panel saw, not snark.

logical_proof··on HBO Cancels Westworld
Totally anecdotal but I am thinking that this is due to the long delay between seasons. I think this is happening with many shows that have these multi year hiatus style productions. There is so much great media out there that trying to get back in to something that is almost two years old takes a lot of effort.
logical_proof··on Taking Lichess to the next level
To be fair the parent comment was saying that the current director of content for Reddit is ALSO part of the Atlantic council, then says the Atlantic council is and has been made up of those individuals. Powell could have been on that council before his death at some point.
logical_proof··on Offline-First Apps: Why Should Apps Be Made to Work in an Offline State?
I am sure it is but the good old sign up and we’ll tell you how much this magic costs is an marketing pattern that I don’t trust. If you can’t be transparent about price I don’t feel confident in giving you my info.

Am I crazy or should there be an article about this and Star Fleet Battles??? This sounds like an impossible situation in todays protect the IP above all world.

logical_proof··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
That is not true. There was hours before they started annotating any kind of service issues. Maybe from when you noticed there was a problem it appeared to be quick, but the board remained green for a large portion of the outtage.
logical_proof··on Adele gets Spotify to take shuffle button off all album pages
That happened the moment that they recorded it and sold it you to listen to at your convenience. To think that an artist should have the ability to tell me how to enjoy their art is just ludicrous. There is nothing wrong with an artist saying that the best way to listen is x, y, or z. But, to tell me I have to listen in their order strikes me as invasive.
logical_proof··on Hardened wood as a renewable alternative to steel and plastic
I am not sure I understand your math here. Let’s say every adult in the US, 300M, plants a tree each month for 12 months, 3.6B trees planted in a year. Or are you factoring in saplings that fail to grow or something? Is it that bad that for every 160 trees planted only one survives?

Edit: strike that I see what you meant there with the a day. I just should have actually read what you wrote before I commented.

logical_proof··on The metaphysical presuppositions of formal logic
I think you just made an equivocation as those Time.now’s are not the same

  A = Time.now
  A != Time.now
  A == A
Just because Time.now looks like the same symbol it is not as it is an impure function that never returns the same result.

logical_proof··on Metaprogramming in Elixir
I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. I think this is a valid criticism that should be discussed and not ignored. I find elixir to be quite elegant to work with but that’s just like my opinion. I guess my question is what about it gives it the steep learning curve?

But Abrahams righteousness was accounted to him by faith and not by works. The entire premise of the book of Hebrews is centered around the idea that Gods covenant with man has always been by grace. In the Old Testament looking forward to the promised Messiah from Genesis and in the New Testament looking at and back to the manifested and risen Christ.

logical_proof··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
I’ve been seeing this idea on the Internet a lot more for months now and I’ve been trying to put my finger on what I think is wrong with it I think I finally figured it out.

I work for a corporation, it’s not a massive corporation, when I first started it was a midsize family owned company and we never did work in service to the bottom line at least not solely. First and foremost we were interested in customers and providing value to them. I think that any major corporation or business small large whatever also has that same responsibility and probably also the same drive. Any organization is made up of multiple people and there’s definitely going to be some actors that are completely bottom line driven but you’re going to also have individuals whose purpose is meeting customer needs and providing customer value. I’m not saying Apple is an altruistic corporation or doesn’t have concern for the bottom line, but making such a broad generalization to say that Apple only serves their bottom line perhaps sets you and others up with a pessimistic attitude where the people doing good work are missed.

This is mostly a bit of introspection on the thought that I’ve been trying to flesh out for the last few months and it’s not meant as a criticism of your comment in anyway I understand the sentiment of where you’re coming from because I’ve also been in that same place. I think my views are just changing a little bit and I thought I’d take this opportunity to write them down hope you have a great day.

logical_proof··on The Fourth of July
“I’m doing my part” - yeah that movie nailed it in a way that I think was subtle the other direction.
logical_proof··on The Fourth of July
I always reflect on this right here when the subject comes up. I first read Starship Troopers as a high schooler in 1999. It impacted me greatly and I took what I wanted to from the book thinking it made me wiser. Upon reflection now 20 years later I think the book is a strong warning against incentivizing civic duty. A strong sense of civic duty and a respect for law must be value enough without reward for a democracy to remain healthy. I am open to the notion that 20 years from now I will think that 2020 me was equally foolish to 1999 me.

logical_proof··on “May I suggest that Mr. Bond be armed with a revolver?” (1956)
John Gardner is actually pretty good. But by the time it gets to Raymond Benson novel Bond has become to much like movie bond and it just comes across as a caricature.
