loganc2342··on Kroger's Digital Struggle
I agree. I’d rather click “load more results” once in a while than rage as I struggle to get to something in the footer I need to click on.
loganc2342··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
> The Pythagorean Theorem is arguably the most famous statement in mathematics, and the fourth most beautiful equation.

Just out of curiosity, which equations are considered the top three “most beautiful?”

loganc2342··on How BlackBerry failed to respond to the iPhone
Personally I think they’re correct…for typing. For any other use case, I would much, much rather have the extra screen space that a keyboard would require to be removed. Regardless, if I need to do a lot of typing, I’d rather use a computer.
loganc2342··on Your brain on emoji
The green bubble has nothing to do with with iPhone vs Android, it has to do with iMessage vs a regular text message. iMessages typically use data and text messages typically don’t. Furthermore, iMessages have greater features that obviously can’t be delivered to people who don’t use iMessage, like reactions and effects. iPhone users who use a different messaging app also have green bubbles, as do messages sent as a text message while off of data.
loganc2342··on Outlook now ignores Windows' Default Browser and opens links in Edge by default
Will this be a “good” move for them, money-wise? Perhaps. SHOULD they do this unequivocally user-unfriendly move? Absolutely not. Businesses SHOULD never screw over their customers for a little extra profit, but of course this sentiment will never stop them.
loganc2342··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
Ah, mobile gaming. The only place that Scrabble can get a 94 on Metacritic.
loganc2342··on Ask HN: Advice on starting a YouTube channel?
Is this just a US thing? I thought this was common knowledge.
loganc2342··on Salvador Dalí is the most faked artist?
On TVTropes this phenomenon is known as “‘Seinfeld’ is Unfunny”[1].

loganc2342··on Salvador Dalí is the most faked artist?
An interesting thought, but I personally don’t consider art style based on how “useful” it is. A realistic painting has a certain quality that a photograph doesn’t. Also, an unrealistic art style does not signify a lack of skill and sometimes even takes more skill depending on the specific piece.
loganc2342··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
This thread almost reads like parody to me. It perfectly encapsulates the Stack Exchange experience in that when a question is clearly asked by a beginner in a subject, they are likely to get responses only decipherable by experts, or at least people who know enough to not be asking that question.
loganc2342··on Flanderization
I think “Urkelization” is covered by the Breakout Character trope[1]:

“What's a writer to do when a minor character that they created for a show suddenly becomes much more popular than the other members of the cast? Why, re-write them as a main character, of course! This is that character[…]other characters in the cast might be Demoted to Extra[2] due to their reduced roles and screentime[…]the popularity of the character has to have influenced the direction of the narrative and put them into a major role, or led to the creation of new content specifically for them.”

I’d say there’s also shades of Spotlight-Stealing Squad[3].

loganc2342··on Learning the ropes: why Germany is building risk into its playgrounds (2021)
As a 2000s/2010s kid, I would word it the same way you did: “there was always one or two kids in a cast.” If your wording is accurate to your experience then I don’t think much has changed. If you don’t physically work in a school then it’s a tough pattern to monitor.
loganc2342··on John Carmack goes off about online-only games being abandoned
Typically that would be to get around a paywall. As far as I know PC Gamer doesn’t have one so this is peculiar. Someone can correct me if I’m mistaken about that.
loganc2342··on Wi Flag (2002)
MMOs are just so expensive to develop now that innovation is almost dead. You either make a WoW-like or you die (and many times you die anyway). They really don’t make MMOs like they used to.
loganc2342··on Path to a free, self-taught education in Computer Science
One course from OSSU I personally recommend to add onto Teach Yourself CS is “The Missing Semester of Your CS Education”[1]. For those unfamiliar with the tools needed to work through something like SICP, this course is a godsend.

loganc2342··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
Thank you for the advice. I’ve been seeing a therapist for about a year and a half now and I’m in the process of seeing a psychiatrist in the very near future. I wish us both luck in overcoming our struggles.
loganc2342··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
I couldn’t have said any of this better myself.

> Things I truly care about, or which are exceedingly important are a huge uphill battle just to put any effort at all towards them.

This is the sentence that hit the hardest for me. I’ve been struggling with this since before I can remember and it frustrates me to no end. The worst part to me isn’t even being less productive than I want to be, it’s my brain sometimes not even letting me do things that bring me joy, like spending time with my family or indulging in hobbies. Anything but what I want to be doing is what my brain wants to do.

loganc2342··on Ask HN: What are the foundational texts for learning about game programming?
Thank you for the suggestions, I think Game Programming Patterns looks particularly helpful (and it helps that it’s freely available!).

loganc2342··on Roll or Don’t
My mistake, 6 and 7 would also be an option.
loganc2342··on Roll or Don’t
Sorry if I misunderstood, but did you not just say that 10 was an option? Any options that you aren’t presented with beyond that likely has to do with the rule that you can only build the columns for three numbers on each turn.

For instance, if the first roll in a turn is 3, 5, 4, and 1, then the options would be 5 and 8 or 4 and 9. Let’s say you pick 5 and 8. Then, let’s say your next roll is the roll you described: 4, 6, 1, and 2. In this case, your options would be, as you said, 3, 5 and 8, 6, 7, or 10. 3 and 10 isn’t an option because then you would be building the columns for 3, 5, 8, and 10 in the same turn, which is over the maximum of three per turn. Ditto for 6 and 7. 5 and 8 would be okay because you’ve previously built in those two columns and so this would keep your total at two. Any of the other combinations of two dice (3, 6, 7, or 10) are okay because selecting those would only build in one more column instead of two, keeping your total within the maximum.

Sorry for being so long-winded but I hope this helps.

loganc2342··on Why we picked Java
I feel like they wanted to make this article because of the bad rap that Java gets in the developer world compared to some “trendier” languages. The article was advocating for the exact approach that you say should be followed when picking a language.
loganc2342··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
Thank you so much for sharing this, I had never seen it before and it hit home more than any article I’ve ever read.
loganc2342··on Windy City Heat
I’ve never seen this film but I gotta say this seems like a pretty cruel prank. Considering Jimmy Kimmel, the one behind the “lie to my kids about eating all their Halloween candy and make them cry” prank, is a producer on this, I’m not surprised.
