loftsy··on Rust without crates.io
Why is a Debian developer a better gatekeeper against supply chain attacks than the developer of a popular Rust library?

For me the alternative to Crates.io/npm/PyPi is a "platform release" like Android where a bunch of stuff is signed off by a corporation.

loftsy··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
It just turns out you can't always do that in a real codebase. For example see here:

  https://github.com/apache/couchdb/blob/23efd8e5b1aa96ef01640fec03a5fedc945ba8b9/src/couch_mrview/src/couch_mrview_http.erl#L228
loftsy··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
I've written some Erlang and found the syntax awkward. One example of this is that variables can only be bound once. This means you end up writing:

  Val = SomeFunc()
  Val1 = Func2(Val)
  Val2 = Func3(Val1)
Yes I know you can use the functional style to minimise having to do this but you still end up seeing this pattern in real code.

Kubernetes has done a good job of replacing OTP.

That said I think Erlang is still an interesting language to learn just because of how different it is.

loftsy··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
As the engineering manager you should implement an automated code formatter in your CI checking. I think clang-format will do this for C. Doing this simply removes this whole class of conflict from your team.

This is a program that you run which will deterministically re-format your whole codebase. The CI checks on a PR should not pass until the PR diff matches what the formatting program says is the correct formatting.

loftsy··on Deno raises $21M
An "isolate cloud" is exactly how Google App Engine worked 10 years ago. It was a good idea then and is still a good idea now.
loftsy··on How often should I rotate my SSH keys?
I haven't worried about SSH keys in years since moving everything to GCP or AWS. One less thing to worry about.

loftsy··on Transpiled For-Of Loops Are Bad for the Client
Try out dart or typescript.
loftsy··on Ask HN: Is there a sane alternative to Angular and React?
Dart is a sane language with great tooling. It has its own version of Angular which works great. It is available today!
loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?

loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
I appreciate the question. I totally agree that bitbucket is the main competition in the free git hosting space.

My best answer to that is that Repo0 is only limited by the amount of storage you have on your Google drive account. I have 1TB of space on Google Drive which is a lot more than you can store on bitbucket. There is also no limit on number of users, teams or sharing.

A different answer is that with Repo0 your data is not walled off on a server. You can see the data, download it and see when the app makes changes to it.

loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
Thanks! Its only recently released and I'm beginning to work on marketing now so the user numbers are really just friends of mine (like less than 50).
loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
Ah the correct url is: https://repo0.com/app.html

I will push a fix shortly.

loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
Thanks! Did you try to sign up? I would appreciate any feedback you have.
loftsy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
https://repo0.com/ - Unlimited Git hosting using your Google Drive account.

Just getting started on marketing.

loftsy··on A Two Month Debugging Story
I think best practice here is to run the whole test in a transaction and then roll back the transaction at the end. This is the approach Django uses.
loftsy··on Type hinting for Python
The proposal for square brackets List[int] in generics is the weirdest thing. There is a standard un-surprising way to do this and it is angle brackets List<int>. What is the reason for forcing developers to use this jarring syntax?
loftsy··on “Did you mean?” Experience in Ruby
Dart has great autocomplete.
loftsy··on Systemd has 6 service startup notification types, and they're all wrong
Note the irony of the situation. Writing an init.d script is actually really hard. A post attacking Systemd is actually a pretty good argument for using it.
loftsy··on Systemd has 6 service startup notification types, and they're all wrong
I thought that a forking init script was supposed to wait for the service to be active before exiting. Otherwise you run "service apache2 start" and apache has not yet started after the command terminates.

This is the same requirement systemd has for the "forking" type daemon.

loftsy··on Common LibreSSL porting mistakes
I've had a quick browse through the LibreSSL commits. There is some comedy gold in there.

loftsy··on Why The Clock is Ticking for MongoDB
On document store indexes the article says:

> If all order data is lumped together, the user will be forced to retrieve the entirety of each order that contains a relevant order line - or perhaps even to scan the entire database and examine every order to see whether it contains a relevant order line.

Both of these are untrue. Author needs to read up on secondary indexes.

loftsy··on Ask HN: Why did this post cost me 10% of subscribers?
A lot of satisfaction, inspiration and personal growth in life comes from leisure time. Enjoying a glass of wine with a friend, meeting a new person. In the end its the people in your life you will remember and who will remember you. Not your achievements.
loftsy··on Twitter's odd use of the word 'followed'
I was at a talk which explained that twitter has recorded every user event since it was launched e.g. Follow, Tweet, Unfollow. They calculate their metrics by processing every event in bulk from start to present. So yeah - they never throw any information away.
loftsy··on Go is freakin' fast, I think
Computers are fast. Go is just one of the ways to use them.
loftsy··on Static site generation on python
Django can be easily adapted to write static pages using the template api and writing to a file. Works well for me.
loftsy··on I want the world to scroll this way
A lot of negativity in the comments. I for one really like this. No loss of focus when scrolling and no flicker from clicking 'next page'. Great idea.
loftsy··on Dart is ready for the real world
I have been using dart for a couple of months now and am extremely happy with it. Code completion on the DOM API is a different world to the classic javascript edit-test-fix syntax error cycle.

The language and the vm are a distraction. The huge win with dart is what the IDE will do for your productivity.

loftsy··on Gnome: Staring into the abyss
All projects and companies need a vision and clearly for a lot of designers, developers and product managers this vision is more integrated simpler to use, touch enabled devices. Part my comment was to say it is not yet clear that this is the right long term solution but its not like there are any compelling alternatives.

Microsoft is not entering the space because of envy(?!?) they are entering it because that is where they see the future of computing.
