lofties··on Coming soon: Fedora on Lenovo laptops
I had the same issue with the touchpad going out on my Thinkpad, running Ubuntu. This would always happen after coming out hibernation so I wrote a systemd service[1] that runs a small shell script [2] after coming out of hibernation.

lofties··on How does Monzo keep 1,600 microservices spinning? Go, clean code, strong team
An article[1] from 2018 mentions 70 engineers. Let's assume 50% growth yoy which puts them at 157 engineers now. Making another assumption that only 20% of these engineers are productive which gives us 31 engineers. That's 1600 microservices for 31 engineers.

That sounds large but if you have 1600 microservices you are _most likely_ writing a single service where you'd normally write a class. Does 50 classes per engineer sound like a lot? Sure does but they didn't create this infrastructure out of thin air - this is an accumulation of many years. For sake of the arguments let's say 2 years. Across 24 months that's only 2 microservices per developer per month.

Not unthinkable, and this is assuming only 20% of their engineering force is actually productive.

lofties··on Ask HN: Old guys, what do you miss about development in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s?
Solving problems together instead of finding the answer on Stack Overflow.
lofties··on People who get goosebumps from music have different brains (2017)
Possibly -- but who is going to share the article when it tells them they're not special?
lofties··on Police in Canada Are Tracking People’s ‘Negative’ Behavior in a ‘Risk’ Database
We tend to complain when failure by communication between social services and law enforcement results in unnecessary deaths. Now Canadian law enforcement has started a program that brings this synergy and we raise concerns about our privacy.

Although the concerns about privacy are grounded; I would love to see the evaluation of this program after one year. I believe that if we want to protect those most at risk in our society, this is a step in the right direction.

lofties··on Unlimited Google Drive storage by splitting binary files into base64
Very cool! About a year ago I had a similar idea, but to store arbitrary data in PNG chunks[1] and upload them to "unlimited" image hosts like IMGUR and Reddit.

lofties··on Ask HN: What made you change your mind about a programming language/paradigm?
Service Oriented Architecture is a much more fitting name. ;)
