lofties··on AWS to bare metal two years later: Answering your questions about leaving AWS
I love the argument that Managed DBs cost a lot, but they're supposedly safer. Meanwhile people can't figure out the IAM permission models so they give the entire world access with root:root.
lofties··on What is “good taste” in software engineering?
Good taste, is what I like and advocate for. Bad taste, is the opposite.
lofties··on Not paying with cash
This is no longer true. With the advance of "cashless" systems that were heavily pushed and promoted by the government, cash payments have dropped significantly![0] Cashless payments now sit near 50%, up from 16% 10 years ago.

lofties··on Do I not like Ruby anymore? (2024)
Personally, I would absolutely not mind it if Python made type annotations required.
lofties··on Why building a self-hosted SaaS is harder
People argue self-hosting is insecure, then open up their AWS RDS instance to the whole world because they can't figure out their IAM settings.
lofties··on 7-Zip for Windows can now use more than 64 CPU threads for compression
Windows has a concept of processor groups, that can have up to 64 (hardware) threads. I assume they updated 7zip to support multiple processor groups.
lofties··on Frequent reauth doesn't make you more secure
I'm a big fan of "should not include profanity, words of a vulgar nature". It's not unthinkable my password manager comes up with a chain of letters that at one point will include "fuck".
lofties··on Excitable cells
Excellent article! Well written and the animations make it so much easier to understand. However I was unable to get the loops to go.
lofties··on Bybit loses $1.5B in hack but can cover loss, CEO confirms
> "Please rest assured that all other cold wallets are secure. All withdrawals are normal," he added.

There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!

lofties··on Jellyfin: We're Good, Seriously
The garbage is exactly why I stopped using Plex. Yeah, Jellyfin isn't perfect. But at least it isn't bombarding me with crap I don't need.
lofties··on Using S3 as a Container Registry
This sounds very, very expensive, and I would've loved to see cost mentioned in the article too. (for both S3 and R2)
lofties··on Anatomy of a cryptocurrency scam
It’s nothing but scams all the way down.
lofties··on Show HN: Voice bots with 500ms response times
Typical HN comment. Absolutely incredible tech is displayed that honestly, one year ago nobody could've imagined. Yet people still find something to moan about. I'm sure the authors of the project, who should be very proud, are fully aware the voice is robotic.
lofties··on Patrick Breyer and Pirate Party Lose EU Parliament Seats
That sounds like it’s not so sad to see after all.
lofties··on AI Ruined Quora
Quora ruined Quora. And it started well before the advance of LLMs.
lofties··on The Disarray Inside Boeing's 737 Factory Before the Door Plug Blowout
Yes, I agree with you there. But managers have a responsibility to make sure systems are in place where if a worker does not self-manage or make a bad decision, this gets caught early on, not 34,000 feet up in air.
lofties··on The Disarray Inside Boeing's 737 Factory Before the Door Plug Blowout
I found the Boeing manager!

Perhaps you and I view the world in a different light, but in any organization where there is even some semblance of hierarchy, the manager is, at the end of the day, always responsible.

If management isn’t aware of what’s going on on the factory floor, then that’s definitely a failure of management. If they didn’t receive any signals, management should’ve investigated. If they hired 100% incompetent people they should’ve hired better people.

lofties··on Cutting a 700 carat rare valuable gemstone [video]
It’s 58% off, and currently listed at $89k. What a sale!
lofties··on Every Single Frame
Another cool addition would be if we could autoplay the frames in order, at a rate of 24 odd frames per second. Perhaps if it’s not too much to ask can we also add the soundtrack? This way we can really appreciate the movie the way the director intended the medium to be experienced!
lofties··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
I'm hosting a few large (multiple TB) projects on Cloudflare R2 with no issues for more than a year now. Super happy.
lofties··on Hetzner GPU Server
Had the same experience. Contacted support for manual verification, was online the next day with Hetzner. Machine has been running without interruption for a year now.
lofties··on Show HN: RAM Prices
Add sorting on the columns. First thing I tried was seeing which one was cheapest per GB.
lofties··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company
Calling Docker overkill for a “one-man sized” startup is an odd choice of words. Kubernetes, sure maybe. But deploying via containers, where orchestration can be a simple bash file beats having to git pull, pip install, and what else not on a handful machines.
lofties··on Show HN: Natural-SQL-7B, a strong text-to-SQL model
Usually what you do with these type of LLMs is pass on most if not all of the schema in your query.

And you’re right in that the end user wouldn’t have access to the schema, although perhaps via prompt injection they could.

lofties··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This (2014)
We’d generate a 18x1 GIF with a gradient color change (or from a solid color to a transparent color) and stretched that out over however pixels we wanted to create a gradient-like effect. e.g

<IMG SRC=“/gradient.gif” HEIGHT=“18” WIDTH=“600”>

lofties··on HN website is/was down. I'm curious why?
HNStatus on Mastodon when? :-)
lofties··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
OK, but tell us how you really feel.
lofties··on Jina AI launches open-source 8k text embedding
No. “Chatting with PDFs” is (mostly) taking a users chat message, retrieve relevant content via e.g embedding search, then feed that into an LLM with a prompt that’s something along the lines of “given this information, can you answer this question”.

This tool helps with embedding part.

I’ve built a bunch of ”chat with your PDFs” bots, do reach out if you have any questions me at brian.jp.

lofties··on So You Think You Know C? (2020) [pdf]
No.
lofties··on Ask HN: What are some low cost payment processing alternatives to Stripe?
Realistic alternatives.
