lode··on AWS services explained in one line each
Some corrections: AWS Outposts: Run Amazon services in your own datacenter (not on your own hardware)

Storage Gateway: Virtual appliance to couple on-premises applications to storage in the cloud.

(So it's no iSCSI (block) to S3 (object) but Block(iSCSI to EBS), File (SMB/NFS/S3 to S3), or Tape (iSCSI VTL))

Addition:

VMware Cloud on AWS: Bare-metal, automatically deployed VMware clusters on AWS hardware.

lode··on Firefox 73
I believe parent refers to Chrome's ability to autodetect OpenSearch websites. It is my 1 reason why I keep going back to Chrome.

How this works: Chrome automatically detects when a website supports OpenSearch.

So for instance, if I have previously visited English Wikipedia, next time I start typing "en.w" Chrome will not suggest autocompletiong to en.wikipedia.org, but will also say: "Press TAB to search Wikipedia(en)".

This is much easier than creating custom search keywords. For instance, it also adds quick searching for e-commerce sites I frequent, even though I'd never add a custom search keyword for it.

If there's a Firefox extension that replicates this functionality (autodetection of OpenSearch and integrating with the URL bar) I'd uninstall Chrome today.

lode··on Show HN: I made a site that helps you find LGBT+ Travel Rankings and Gay Laws
You've got some bugs in the processing. For instance, at least Belgium & the Netherlands have equal age of consent.
lode··on WeWork Cleans House, Looks to Trim Staff Close to Ex-CEO, Sell Private Jet
The tail number is N1872. Sadly, most databases like flightradar hide private planes, and ADSBexchange (which does not) can't find it.
lode··on Hackers Hit Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a ‘SIM Swap’
WebAuthn/U2F security keys. No MITM, phishing or duplication possible. Register more than one per account in case the physical key breaks, keep one in a secure place.
lode··on Apple Card launches today for all US customers
Tip for those signing up: when you sign up you agree to arbitration (ie. signing away the right to sue in court), but you can opt-out within 90 days.

Opting out can be done right on your phone, through messages: https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/20/20813800/apple-card-pay-a...

lode··on What3words: The app that can save your life
This sounds awfully like a PR puff piece. (In fact a link to it is liked by their PR person https://twitter.com/miriamfrankLDN/likes, and the images come straight from their PR archive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1S-kYBJIjhfkIElyONvod...)

If they had a smartphone with GPS and data connectivity so they could download an app, they could use that to share their exact coordinates without having to download this proprietary app that wants to copyright the concept of location.

Just on my homescreen alone I have 4 apps that can already share my exact location: Google Maps, Apple Maps, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger

lode··on Nations of the Amazon are seeking “shared governance” of the .amazon TLD
Mostly, yes.

https://icannwiki.org/.google https://icannwiki.org/.microsoft https://icannwiki.org/.apple https://icannwiki.org/.fox https://icannwiki.org/.walmart https://icannwiki.org/.honda

All of these are examples of Brand TLDs (https://icannwiki.org/Brand_TLD), which can be registered as part of ICANNs New TLD program which started in 2012.

As many 'new' TLDs (such as the ones introduced in the 2000s such as .travel, .museum and .mobi), many of them are not used a lot, and many people are not familiar with them.

lode··on Facebook Will Introduce Ads as Videos Start, a Move Long Resisted
> haven't found a convenient way to export them yet

Click the triangle on the right in the menu bar, and go to Settings. Under "General - General Account Settings" there's a light-grey link that takes you to "Download a copy of your Facebook data". From there you can request an archive of your profile.

It doesn't include all the 'shadow profile' info they keep of you, but it gives you and easy way to download all of your photos at once, easy to import in your photo management app.

EDIT: I've just done a fresh export of my profile, and it seems that sadly the photos don't get exported at full resolution, so this might not be the best option if FB is your primary photo storage at the moment.

lode··on OVH Incident in Strasbourg
More info on Twitter from OVH's CEO: https://twitter.com/olesovhcom

and on https://twitter.com/ovh_support_en

"SBG: ERDF is trying to find out the default. 2 separated 20kV lines are down. We are trying to restart 2 generators A+B for SBG1/SG4. 2 others generators A+B work in SBG2. 1 routing room is in SBG1, the second in SBG2. Both are down. "

"An incident is ongoing impacting our network. We are all on the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience."

"SBG: 1 gen restarted."

"RBX: all optical links 100G from RBX to TH2, GSW, LDN, BRU, FRA, AMS are down."

lode··on Keybase is out for iPhone, Android
Keybase has succeeded in making crypto and user verification user-friendly enough for day to day use. (Even though it's probably not easy enough to use in day to day e-mail.)

This new mobile experience is very slick, with a very smooth login flow that just 'feels' secure as well.

The Keybase verification of different services feels very much like what ClaimID used to do, back when OpenID was showing promise as an open, secure, easy to use single sign on protocol. I'd still love for someone to solve this challenge once and for all. For some reason I'd love to see what the team behind Keybase might come up with in this space. (For now I'll have to do with using 1Password and 2FA wherever possible.)

lode··on Hello from Orkut
Hello.com was a product of Picasa when it was acquired by Google. Given Orkut's history at Google, I assume he was able to get a good deal on it.
lode··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
Can’t live without: 1Password - First install on any system I use. I only know 2 passwords by heart: my login password and my 1Password vault pw. Also supports TOTP 2 factor authentication.

Dropbox - It’s a folder, it syncs, and does this very well. Syncs my 1Password vault as well.

GrandPerspective - Visualise where your disk space is going. Every time I fire this up I find stuff I’ve forgotten about that takes up a lot of space, or something that is using disk space it shouldn’t. (Once a WiFi log hadn’t rolled over and was using 8GB of space.) - http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/

Synology - It took some investment, but now I finally have a place where all my data is, safer than on one or two external drives. But that’s not all, Synology also is a fantastic home/office server with an “app store” where I can run applications, run a VPN endpoint, run Docker containers, ...

Crashplan - Not the fantastic lightweight native Mac & Linux tool I’d want, but rather a somewhat heavy Java tool. But the business model for me is great. Free replication between endpoints, ie. all my family and my NAS and unlimited replication to their datacenters for my own devices for $5/month (Crashplan Family) - http://www.crashplan.com

Plex - For me it’s always been super reliable. Server runs flawlessly on my Synology. - http://www.plex.tv

Pinboard.in - Proudly non-free, stable and boring. The author’s presentations and twitter feeds are insightful and hilarious, I’m glad to support his work.

Superduper - I use it less often than before, since I now have a proper NAS and backup solution (see above), but Superduper has helped me so much in the past it deserves a mention. Always provides a safety net when I do a migration between hdd and sdd, between systems, ... I even bought two licenses as I lost my previous one, spending another $28 on it was a no brainer. http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription...

Coda - Still my html/css/php/… editor of choice. - http://www.panic.com/coda/

Waze on my phone: best navigation I’ve ever used

youtube-dl

wget & curl - they have slightly other use cases, and I love them both. I use both of them at least weekly, mostly daily

VMware Fusion & vSphere/ESXi: still rock solid after all those years. (Disclaimer: I work there)

Other software I particularly love: Sketch (mentioned elsewhere in the thread) and Affinity Designer. I like Illustrator, but as a non-professional it’s way too expensive for me.

lode··on I finally finished this awesome game called Photoshop, let me send you a video
in the drop down where you select the iPhone as video source you can also select the iPhone as audio source. I'm not sure if it records the audio output of the iPhone or the microphone input of the phone.
lode··on I finally finished this awesome game called Photoshop, let me send you a video
This can even be used to sneakily record Snapchat images & movies.
lode··on Chinese hacked CNN (sportsillustrated.cnn.com)
No one is hacked here.

sportsillustrated.cnn.com is a CNAME record to cnnsi.com

cnnsi.com used to be the website for CNN Sports Illustrated, the sports channel that was a joint venture between CNN and Sports Illustrated (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN_Sports_Illustrated) between 1996 and 2002. Sports Illustrated lives at www.si.com

At some point the domain cnnsi.com was not renewed, expired and was re-registered on May 1, 2015. It seems CNN just forgot to remove an old alias.

lode··on Airbnb Pits Neighbor Against Neighbor in Tourist-Friendly New Orleans
I've had that in Los Angeles as well. "If you see any people just tell them you're friends of Matt visiting. My condo ownership rules forbid renting out/Airbnb."
lode··on Amazon's customer service backdoor
I've thought of checking that... Instead of Domains By Proxy LLC or whatever legally holding your account, setup an offshore shell corporation and use that to register my domains, becoming my own whoisguard in the process. It's going to be more expensive than these services, but the domains stay under your full control and you can keep your personal info private.
lode··on iOS 9.3 Preview
The education preview [0] looks like the first step toward supporting multiple user profiles per iPad. iPhones typically are one-person devices (on Android you can switch users, I've never tried it though), but iPads are often shared. I've seen lots of families where there's one iPad shared between the whole family. The kids are constantly logging in and out of their Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/E-mail accounts. The fact that they have to log in and out often usually leads to them using very weak passwords. I hope this feature makes its way to general consumption.

lode··on Apple to replace AT&T in Dow Jones on March 18
The Dow is a ridiculous stock index. It doesn't adjust for inflation, and - more importantly - just looks at the stock price, not the underlying market cap. So if Caterpillar (market cap 49.44B) rises 5$ from 80 to 85, the Dow rises 32 points. If Exxon Mobil (market cap 362 Billion) rises from 86 to 91, the Dow rises the same 32 points, even though the first rise means CAT grew only in 3,3 billion Market cap, while XOM grew 20,95 Billion.
