lockhouse··on Past Covid infection protection against re-infection: a systematic meta-analysis
My point is that the vaccines abilities were oversold and underwhelmed people with their efficacy. This and several other policy missteps have severely undermined people’s trust regarding public health institutions.
lockhouse··on Past Covid infection protection against re-infection: a systematic meta-analysis
The difference is that flu vaccines actually prevent infection in many cases, whereas COVID vaccines do not prevent them, but merely lessen the symptoms and risk of hospitalization.
lockhouse··on Past Covid infection protection against re-infection: a systematic meta-analysis
Not even that, the vaccines don’t prevent infection, so at this point nearly everyone has some degree of natural immunity to COVID.
lockhouse··on Past Covid infection protection against re-infection: a systematic meta-analysis
Not sure why you’re downvoted. It’s not significantly more lethal at this point than seasonal flu. The only difference to the population that I see is that vaccines for COVID have less efficacy than those for influenza.

AI for nearly everything has been very overhyped. Paintings of people have extra fingers and other strange artifacts. Using it for writing prose is hit or miss. Full self driving cars are thwarted by rogue traffic cones.

I think we'll have AI some day, but today it's just not at the level that all the hype claims it is.

In their defense, sometimes the same story has a couple different headlines depending on which site you're posting the story from. Also, sometimes the exact same story gets posted multiple times within seconds of each other. Maybe in that second scenario the HN backend could provide a means of notifying the submitter that this exact link has already been posted?

How does Russia have a strategic location?

The vast majority of their country is a frozen wasteland, and they desperately needed Crimea to have a decent warm water naval base. They have decent mineral resources and have shared borders with several important countries, but that is about all that is strategic about their geographical location.

I think everyone is missing the point so far.

The author is saying that everything in their life is shaped by the events they have experienced up to this point. It doesn't matter whether or not the individual event was good or bad at the time, because we ultimately can't know what impact it will have on our future.

lockhouse··on Maui County sues Hawaiian Electric Company for damages from disastrous fires
I think energy cooperatives serve as a good model for utilities. Not a private for profit company sacrificing safety for profits, but also not a wasteful inefficient government entity.

We had an energy cooperative that serviced our previous house and the quality of service was excellent. Power was restored quickly after storms, customer service was friendly, and best of all, because everyone was a "member" instead of a customer, we got a check back every year with any excess profits that they made.

Anecdotal of course, but our current energy supplier is government run and compared to the cooperative it is much more expensive, customer service is worse, and outages tend to be longer.

Am I the only one that feels like the WEF gives off SPECTRE from James Bond vibes?

It's very creepy how a large group of rich and powerful elites get together to decide how they're going to run the world despite not being elected officials and pushing authoritarian solutions to the world's problems.

They have literally stated that they want us to "own nothing and be happy" because these entitled pricks feel that they are the only ones that deserve to own anything. They would have us renting everything for the rest of our lives and eating bugs, while they enjoy steak dinners in one of their 12 houses with a garage full of Lamborghinis.

The vulnerability still lies within the browser in this scenario. It should actually be somewhat trivial for all the major browsers to prevent this sort of attack.

This is obsolete functionality, I can't remember the last time I needed to authenticate to a website using the username@domainname.tld functionality. It should be something hidden behind a config: setting to turn on if you run into a legacy website still requiring it and know exactly what you're doing.

Honestly why is that a problem? If a TLD gets confused for a file extension your browser has a serious bug.

We've had .com, .info, .ai, .app, .sh, .st, .pl, .so, and many other TLDs that are the same as existing file extensions for years now and it's never been a problem.

lockhouse··on Why a Highly Mutated Coronavirus Variant Has Scientists on Alert
From the article:

Should the public be concerned about BA.2.86?

If the photo IDs are made available free of charge in convenient locations such as post offices, how would they be disenfranchised?
lockhouse··on Wi-Fi sniffers strapped to drones: odd plan to stop election fraud
Despite the claims of a certain political party, state photo ID cards are easy to get here as well. They are needed for most benefits programs, banking, driving cars, air travel, purchasing items that are age restricted, and many other routine parts of adulthood. It is extremely unlikely that potential lawful voters would be disenfranchised by requiring a photo ID to vote. However, I fully support making a government issued photo ID freely available for those who don’t already have one.
