Sure, and the humans and their phones are fair collateral damage in that worldview.
lmz··on Creepy Crawlies
It's funny how some people say "AI bad, datacenters waste energy" then other people say "AI bad, going to make humans and their phones waste energy".

Restricting the availability of the condoms restricts them for everyone.
lmz··on Is it safe to call print in a Python signal handler?
BSD kqueue, Solaris ports.
lmz··on Is it safe to call print in a Python signal handler?
The article mentions that the Python handler is run outside of the C handler context and so is not subject to the C safety restrictions. It will not crash since the interpreter only calls the Python handler when it is safe. It will however not protect against reentrancy issues in the Python handler.

The C printf function is not async signal safe and is one of the examples in the manual: https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man7/signal-safety.7.html

Any alternative non US, Europe wide card network? I suppose you could use Mir, or UnionPay.
lmz··on Monzo Stand-In
Won't help if they sanction you and cut you off from SWIFT (or the card networks) so it just depends on the degree of the governance issues here.
lmz··on Monzo Stand-In
Surely by being a bank, you are already exposed to that.

Obviously the answer is to get a square phone. One of those foldables?

This is a tortured analogy. Yes it's even better if they don't do crime and yet inherit the money as that would allow them to claim they have clean hands, like the developed world is doing now. ("Colonialism? Massive resource extraction? That was a long time ago. But we're still keeping our riches and embargoing our tech from you. Don't try to do what we did.")
lmz··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Voluntary service is great but when you get invaded you're not going to send the H1B visa holder to the frontlines, are you?
lmz··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Not even American. Just visited once for a few weeks. The answer is generic, in recent times you can compare how Ukraine or Russia can conscript their own citizens but probably not foreign workers who just work there.

National defense, and (more vaguely) a responsibility to keep the host country in good shape as there's no other country they can run back to if things go bad in the host country.

Does it have to be dynamite or are other, improvised explosives possible?

The countries are competitive with each other, not in a father/son relationship.

At least the father has a natural lifespan and the ill gotten riches would go to the son(s). Can we say the same thing about the riches of say, the USA? If China does nothing then they will inherit all of it? Or will the US just keep its fortune gained through whatever means, and just tell other up and coming countries to suck rocks and know their place while using the Earth as justification?

These countries are competitive entities.

Even though the planet is shared, the earlier developed nations have gained advantages from their polluting (and at many times, colonial) past that allowed them to pull ahead of other countries. Now they want to stop others going down the same path without giving up their entrenched advantage. That is pulling the ladder up.

Either give up those advantages in the form of reparations (will never happen) or remove any pretense of moral superiority when all you are doing is just preserving your leading position gained using practices you now decry.

lmz··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
There's a phrase for that "do as I say, not as I do" (see also: "pulling the ladder up"). This is rightly viewed as hypocritical by those on the receiving end.

Re: emissions per capita - why should the Chinese be limited to a lower amount than the US citizens? They want a high standard of living too.

Is that real memory taken? If it's shared code from the same executable surely the multiples are not very relevant?
lmz··on Solo – a .so loader for static Linux binaries
The root cause is alternative libc implementations. Are BSD syscalls considered stable? I remember Go moving to use libc on OpenBSD. Solaris also has the libc as the stable interface. Linux kernel is an outlier here guaranteeing stable syscalls but you wanting to use another libc is not Glibc's problem.

Something tells me the people misusing the SSN would just misuse this new national ID number too. Wasn't the issue that people were treating knowledge of the (de facto public) ID number as proof of identity? Nothing is stopping them from doing the same with any future ID number.
