lmz··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
There was a US lawsuit against them for their linear compressors: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/consumer/fridge-failures-...
lmz··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
The dirty secret is there's a lot of people employed to do things that are not "products that matter" according to your definition.
lmz··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
Some humans don't even manage to do that.
lmz··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
You get a local "tourist" SIM card then configure EAP-SIM. But I guess you don't need the wifi that much once you have the SIM card.

Train owners were mostly local versus possibly foreign ships?
lmz··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
> Granted, we know Android would not be where it is today without open source contributions.

But the parts of Android that are majority outside developed is still available as the Linux kernel. I have my doubts that the uniquely Android bits of the userland and system services have many outside contributions.

lmz··on Waymo in Singapore
Counting "driving" as a sin is certainly an interesting perspective.
lmz··on Pkgsrc Is Cool (2022)
> How much value is all of this anyway, compared to fetching the tarball from the project's site and running make on your own? I guess the "patches to apply" is the most valuable part of all of this.

For one package not much. For a package with dependencies (that you don't already have), quite a bit of value.

I thought it meant "the factory overclock is marginal" in the sense of "borderline unstable"?
lmz··on Resistance Training Prescription for Muscle Function, Hypertrophy in Health
Surely that's swimming pool fees or subscription? I can't imagine having your own pool is cheaper than a gym subscription.
lmz··on SystemIO conflicts are not firmware bugs
No. Unless the hardware had Linux stickers on it.
lmz··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
The point is that browsers have been made and funded by BigCo, and treated as app delivery platforms at least for the last 20 years. Netscape, Microsoft, Apple, Google (for Mozilla and then Chrome). The last non BigCo mainstream(?) browser was probably Opera.

It's silly to complain now about BigCo, WebGPU, and ignore the past 20 years of history. The WWW has not been about document delivery only for the last 20 years. Instead of tiring themselves out complaining about the Web and modern browsers, they can use something else.

lmz··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
The application delivery thing was done as far back as Netscape threatening to relegate Windows to "a poorly debugged set of device drivers" so Web-whatever is simply another step in that direction. Like I said, if you purists want just document delivery, you can use links or w3m or maybe Gemini.
lmz··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
The BigCos are the reason you have that browser in the first place. If you don't like it, you know where to download ... links or something.
lmz··on iPhone Duo
Android devs have always had to handle different screen sizes. Not the case for iPhone devs e.g. I have a game "Ridiculous Fishing" (from 2013) which is a mess layout-wise on my iPhone because it seemingly hardcoded some pixel values and used percentages for the others. They have a fixed version for Apple Arcade.
lmz··on I Rewrote My Back End in Go in 72 Hours and Cut My AWS Bill by 94%
Well the actual pages from that time are mostly gone and that was what I could find with some examples and explanatory text.
lmz··on I Rewrote My Back End in Go in 72 Hours and Cut My AWS Bill by 94%
MS(IE) had ActiveScript, of which VBS was just one implementation (although it was the bundled one that always existed). People have built integrations for stuff like Tcl, Python, or Perl, making them available to the browser.

Example: https://perlhacks.com/2026/07/remember-perlscript-when-inter...

lmz··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
> most businesses globally don't work in idiotic and often amoral mode of 'move fast and break things'

Not sure what business you are in but the non tech industries (corporate IT, in house apps) have not, in general, been associated with quality. Cost cutting, outsourcing to the lowest bidder: yes. Quality: no.

lmz··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
> Even DOS didn't really have libraries, you had peripherals mapped to memory at certain addresses, and a set of interrupts, and that was it.

Did I just dream up loading a mouse driver and MSCDEX in DOS?

lmz··on Hackers have withdrawn ~4k BTC (~$320M) from the Liquid Federation wallet
There are always complaints on here about how Google is only paying $X for vulns. One advantage of decentralized digital money is that its bug bounties are self funding and the payout amount researcher-controlled.
lmz··on OpenBSD Stories: Strange Medieval Devices
Because it's assumed that it's for desktop. The first iPhone demo had (if I recall correctly) the browser zoom into the NYT website. Which can work well.

I'd rather this than what I often see nowadays: sites with fixed width tables that overflow out of the mobile viewport with no way to view the info.

lmz··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
"capability, reliability or robustness" has nothing to do with ease.
lmz··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
We are debating the attempt to restrict supply here as a counterargument to "everyone wants to share their skill", not the success or failure of such attempts.
lmz··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
> For instance, iirc, shipping the phone primarily with a non-Google alternative ROM means you won't get any play services on them, even if you want to have a secondary version with a standard Google ROM.

Is this wrong? Sure they have agreements but does it include "don't sell phones with alternative ROMs"? It's licensed software and I don't think the phone makers want to end up on the wrong side of a Google lawsuit.

lmz··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Google must allow them to install Play Services.
lmz··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Google don't even process the donations do they? It is a link to an external donation page.
lmz··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
How do you explain guilds restricting supply then? (The most common example is Physicians).
lmz··on Creepy Crawlies
Sure, and the humans and their phones are fair collateral damage in that worldview.
lmz··on Creepy Crawlies
It's funny how some people say "AI bad, datacenters waste energy" then other people say "AI bad, going to make humans and their phones waste energy".
lmz··on Thoughts on Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas
