lmedinas··on Ask HN: What projects can new programmers build to gain more confidence?
Here are some ideas:

- Command Line Music Player

- Homepage/Startup page similar to Homer.

- Discord Bot

- Mastodon client

- Simple Markdown editor

lmedinas··on Subscription fatigue and related musings
Yeah, this is sad. I even see apps which ask you 20€ per year OR 100€ for Lifetime. This is nonsense. I don't mind paying for a subscription if: there are major updates being delivered with a concrete roadmap and a service which i need to use everyday. Otherwise I'm not interested and i dont see the point of offering subs.

Apple plays a major role on this by motivating Developers to use subscriptions, now there are subscriptions for everything!

lmedinas··on Ask HN: A Social Media for Programmers
Isn't what Dev.to already does ?

A social Media for Programmers in my eyes would be GitHub with some kind of a share feed so that everybody can post their Gists or Pictures of their nerdy stuff.

lmedinas··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
It's an interesting post but i guess at the end it all ends up because the Author got tired of Apple and wanted to use Linux. Through the post its difficult to find another reason, specially when the Mac is clearly superior in nearly all the points mentioned: screen, battery, CPU, etc...

Regarding MacOS i use it for years (I do have machines with Windows and Linux at home) as my main Desktop OS and im also getting frustrated with some Apple decisions lately. But for a plain Desktop/Workstation OS MacOS at the end does everything Linux does at the end of the day its a matter of taste.

With Laptops i think Apple still has the edge, on Workstations, you can build a damn good PC with a Ryzen 7x and an NVIDIA/ATI GPU and have lots of advantages compared to a Mac Studio for example.

lmedinas··on Gentoo Linux 2022 Retrospective
Happy to see Gentoo Linux still -funroll-loops!

As an old Gentoo Dev, its remarkable to see so many people giving love to this project. Too bad it lost popularity over the years but it has a very special place in my heart. I don't have any machine currently running Gentoo for many reasons but i'm sure sooner or later will find a machine to make some rice, -funroll-loops and relive some good moments from my youth.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: Why did medium.com "fail"?
I have a love and hate relationship with Medium.com. On one hand has a very nice design and it was is really nice and comfortable to read. On the other hand limiting the amount of reads per month while putting that stupid popup to read is absolutely dumb.
lmedinas··on North Korea Imposes Lockdown on Pyongyang to Fight ‘Recurrent Flu’
i guess its not hard to do taking into account how the regime works. Also having people sick and not having medicine available can lead to lots of deaths.
lmedinas··on Tell HN: MS forcing Edge shortcut on desktop
Does Escape from Tarkov run on Linux through Proton ?if yes I will install Linux on a separate partition tomorrow on my gaming workstation.
lmedinas··on Mercedes-Benz workforce to receive record profit-sharing bonus
one more upvote...

>"Interesting how this structure has a headline like this one, vs the ">10k workers >laid off from giant corporation with record profits for the past two years" >headlines that seem to be popping up here daily."

i often see people going or want to go to giant IT companies, as you refer, forgetting the "safety" of working for big German or even European companies. In some German companies you get a job for life, a contract without end and the "working council" works very hard to find solutions for all workers and for the company. This is one of the reasons why i would hardly work for an American Company in US.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: What are some of your “buy it for life” purchases?
- My old CDs - My Japan/USA build guitars - Ibanez 7 String - Tube Amp - Engl - Guitar Pedals

ok enough music stuff.

I have still a SuperSparc 20 and it runs like a champ. Maybe it will last another 20 years ?

- Books

- House

lmedinas··on Making Blogs Popular Again
Because i want to own my content and use it the way i want. To give me away free content and leave it at mercy from social media companies and frustrated CEOs we already have Twitter and others for that matter.
lmedinas··on Making Blogs Popular Again
Would the App be somekind of an aggregator, i.e Planet Debian or something like Twitter or medium where people would write posts in the platform. If its the second option, no thanks!
lmedinas··on Which CPU is best for long time use Intel or AMD?
At this point if you find a good Ryzen 3x or 5x series would be my recommendation. IMO AMD nailed it and they are ahead of Intel. Until Intel comes up with a new design it will be hard to keep up except to increase Clock and add minor features.
lmedinas··on Microbenchmarking AMD’s RDNA 3 Graphics Architecture
Obviously the 4K is a typo. /s/4/2/g
lmedinas··on Microbenchmarking AMD’s RDNA 3 Graphics Architecture
Well, as a matter of fact, the 7900 XTX is much closer to the RTX 4080 than to the RTX 4090.
lmedinas··on Microbenchmarking AMD’s RDNA 3 Graphics Architecture
The 4090s costs >=4k Euros in Germany right now. So that MSRP is completely unrealistic.

Still i think, even with these crazy prices, the price per performance increased compared to the previous generation. The 4090 is a very good card.

There goes the time of the 700 Euros high end models.

lmedinas··on On the Gnome project and “my way or the highway”
Its the default on those distros because those distros invest on GNOME and GTK and GTK is SW.

QT has an history of being connected with non-free SW licenses, therefore commercial (or company sponsored) for those distros to rely and invest on such project is risky.

lmedinas··on On the Gnome project and “my way or the highway”
I agree and the constant API changes over the last years on GTK+/Glib and GNOME libraries hurt users and developers.
lmedinas··on Apple TV+ to adapt William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer
hopefully it will not be heavily censored and ended up being extreme boring.
lmedinas··on New Chrome features to save battery and make browsing smoother
Get a VPN or use TOR.
lmedinas··on New Chrome features to save battery and make browsing smoother
The UI is ok, the major issue with Safari is to not have uBlock.
lmedinas··on Activision’s faulty anti-cheat software
BTW... sometime ago there were people on Forums convinced they got banned on EFT due to WSL and Virtualbox, as there were hacks using VMs. Worth take a look first.

EFT requires a huge amount of free time, it feels like a day job. I would consider that before putting time on that game. Its nothing like COD.

lmedinas··on Instagram Is Over
There are 3 reasons why Tiktok succeeded and Instagram struggles.

1) The focus of the Social Network is normal people, doing anything it might be interesting to others. Which is pretty much the contrary of Instagram which focus on Celebrities and "Friends".

2) Tiktok has an amazing fine-tuned Algorithm. Its like even a mirror of your subconscious, it tries very much to play anything you desire to see.

3) Instagram, Youtube and Twitter are full of ads. It just breaks the user experience. Youtube experience sucks too because they show Videos with higher probability of views which in turn are tipically big youtubers playing sponsored content.

lmedinas··on Twitter 2.0: Our continued commitment to the public conversation
By then only Tesla/Elon fanboys and Crypto people will be using Twitter. Tech guys moved to Mastodon and Celebrities to Instagram and Tiktok.

:(

lmedinas··on Ask HN: Has the iPad Replaced Your Laptop?
to me it kinda replaced, for example, social media and web surfing there is no need to use a laptop. My family mostly use the iPad but due to the poor multi-tasking and single user account we still use our macbook m1.
lmedinas··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
I have a similar experience, I started to use Emacs with my first Linux installation way back in the late 90s together with pico (later nano for fast editing). A few years ago i came to know about sublime text and I was astonished how much can be done with it and how quick it was compared to Emacs. Sure it does not contain all the goodies Emacs has but i after getting sublime text i realized how much time i saved and focusing on code. Recently i stop bothering and moved to VSCODE and its pretty damn good.

I miss sometimes Emacs but i prefer to use VSCODE nowadays as its a much modern environment and brings me directly to the point of comfort. I also tried Neovim but i was not convinced to replace VSCODE, i mostly use it on the console for quick and dirty editing.

lmedinas··on Video games are kinda boring
its just like an MMO.
lmedinas··on What did www.python.org look like from 1996 to 2021?
2004 is by far my favorite. Seems really clean and intuitive.
lmedinas··on Ask HN: What do we do with cash now that inflation is a risk?
Cryptocurrency and Gold ?
lmedinas··on Firefox 95 Released
except that Safari doesnt have a decent adblocker like ublock is for me a big issue. Plus Safari 15 must have some kind of a bug or something it drains my battery just like Brave.
