I may have been ambiguous but I am saying if you work somewhere (pre IPO) and you can see their killing it, on fire, and are seeing a truth other companies can't see then you know (perhaps doing some more research on public info) that it is a good buy.

Also for private companies you often get an all hands with financials, sales info, strategy etc.

The bet here is: this company isn't just lucky they have a killer system. You would get shares privately if possible. Even at IPO at a higher price, knowing they are kickass you can buy then.

The point is to buy at a good price. If you know it is a good price at IPO then why not?

I am not advocating IPO trading.

I am saying join unicorn X, see of they have a good plan, if the company is well run etc.

You can tell because you are working there. Then if it is a good buy buy it, otherwise don't.

It is a bit like a hunter "tracking" their deer for 2 days rather than walking around shaking trees.

I am going to take advantage of this arbitrage opportunity to start a newspaper :)
lizzas··on A visual proof that a^2 – b^2 = (a + b)(a – b)
I am not convinced since in this world you can have the following rects:

1 x 1

1 x -1

-1 x -1

Is just the middle one a cut out?

I reckon you need the axiom from the field to do generalize this to negative numbers.

A good example of the shortening of proofs. Like "Observe that... {unproven thing}"

It is not necessarily bad but explains why every step isn't always proven. To avoid tedium and long papers.

Starting a business to give you energy is a great reason.
lizzas··on Ask HN: Why aren't cost-minded SME/startups using Linux on laptops even now?
Plus you might use Dell and let them do all the support, warranty and accidental damage cover. Having someone pop in and fix shit is great, and Windows is just part of that world. You now focus on your core thing.

Macs or cloud workspaces are there if you need posixy environments. Linux docker is OK on Windows too.

lizzas··on Show HN: Free Bluesky Profile URL Shortener
Nice but wouldnt it be better if Bluesky did this themselves (to avoid confusion)

The trick for most people is don't trade ever until you have great insight. Better to SP500 it until that happens. Don't data mine.

A good headline for trading is rare, think disasters, election wins maybe. Interest rate changes.

Better would be insider info (not insider trading). You work somewhere so you sussed out their sauce but to the market it is yet another company. Pre or soon after IPO is best.

lizzas··on Should programming languages be safe or powerful?
Hard and soft tacos :) Racket is both.
lizzas··on Should programming languages be safe or powerful?
They mean bug unsafe generally not memory unsafe specifically.

I was gonna say "what about Racket"! And that is what they land on.

lizzas··on Conversations are better with four people
It is worse when story tellers come in and hog conversations. It is even worse worse when there are more than one and it is one upmanship on the war stories. Find this unpleasant and tiring. I prefer listening from more people.

Me too. I think this what introversion means.

Being quiet at bigger gatherings is a different thing.

lizzas··on What Is Entropy? A Measure of Just How Little We Know
Sorry ... I am replying mostly to the dice idea which wasn't you.

Yes correct about the guid idea. My point is the discussion is easier to follow if grounded in reality (as best modelled since that is all we have plus some evidence stored in the same "SSD"!)

This will be my favorite Issac Asimov story and the reason I will start reading him
lizzas··on What is entropy? A measure of just how little we know
Can we take the anthropic out of this? I reckon it'll make things easier.

Instead of me knowing, do other physical objects get affected. I might get anemsia and forget what the dots on a dice mean and say they are all the same: all dotty!

Imagine each hydrogen atom has a hidden guid but this is undetectable and has no effect on anything else. This is a secret from the rest of physics!

I guess!!! (Armchair pondering!) that that guid cannot be taken into account for entropy changes. At least from any practical standpoint.

You could imagine each atom having a guid and come up with a scheme to hash the atom based on where it came from ... but is that info really there and if so does it affect anything physically beyond that atoms current state (as defined by stuff that affects other stuff).
