lizzas··on Ask HN: What you are planning to learn in 2025 for your career and why?
That is fine. You could carve out 1 hour a week worktime for learning with permission, and be happy with that. You can learn alot in an hour if it is not a huge new thing. For example concurrency in the language you know rather than learn Rust from scratch.
lizzas··on Ask HN: What you are planning to learn in 2025 for your career and why?
Learn what I need to be productive in a new job:

GraphQL

Some AWS concepts

Go

I feel like learning what will make me fast right now at work is a good investment.

lizzas··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
Get a solar system and it can run the meter in reverse. Which is cool!
lizzas··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
Tort Law

(plus see tristors answer as to it being passed on and not coming from profits)

People help each other in war? Catastophy? Sometimes they do, sometimes they definitely do not.
lizzas··on The era of open voice assistants
Open as in 3d print files, rpi etc.? If so this is the project I am looking for!

lizzas··on The Parker Solar Probe will make its closest approach yet to the Sun
They mean Fiji
lizzas··on The Parker Solar Probe will make its closest approach yet to the Sun
Depends on the object receiving the heat. Walk outside in bearfoot in summer. You will soon notice some surfaces are way hotter than others. This depends on how efficiently heat can transfer. Convection, radiation, conduction I think are the 3 ways.

The air temp is heated by the sun, those surfaces then the atmosphere is preventing heat escaping. A lot going into that 120F!

That is why things like climate change and urban heat islands don't need a closer sun.

lizzas··on The Parker Solar Probe will make its closest approach yet to the Sun
The same gravity that wants to pull you in keeps you in orbit. And any object we launch starts off in the suns orbit.

lizzas··on HAM radio operators receive signals from Voyager 1 on Dwingeloo telescope
Doh! I lived there and been within 1km of it without knowing it!
lizzas··on What should I look for in my first SWE job?
I have no faith that the extra 15 hours of grind is worth anything. Let's compare for example:

55h/week job because time sucked up by lengthy meetings and status reports.

40h/week job then spend 15h/w spare time learning algorithms and design interviews.

lizzas··on Never Forgive Them
This is the problem. Anyone fighting for good has to be an holier than thou angel who doesn't ask for your email while those on team evil are forgiven for being several peeping toms in a trenchcoat, along with all their other sins.
lizzas··on Ask HN: Why do laptop chargers have data wires?
Oh so not Thatcher. Interesting.
lizzas··on Ask HN: Quit Stimulants, Productivity Suffering
Are you comfortable to say which stimulant that is?

Maybe change teams or even downlevel?

lizzas··on Ask HN: What are cool open source hardware projects you know?
The PCR wikipedia rabbit hole that got me down was fascinating.
lizzas··on Ask HN: Why is Ilya saying data is limited when the whole world is data?
Feature selection is back!
lizzas··on Crystal Ball Trading Game
Is there a strategy here?
lizzas··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
Pre SMS / high connectivity this would have been common. Someone rings the house phone and that's your evening gone.
lizzas··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
Because it is not zero sum and some people are up for this. I wouldn't say no unless it was someone I wanted to avoid. And that is very few people.

You made me laugh though!

lizzas··on Crystal Ball Trading Game
Get a better broker :-) my SP50 (yes 50, dont ask!) index is doing alwite.
lizzas··on When a Crystal Ball Isn't Enough to Make You Rich
Depends what you mean by cheat? Break a law? And putting ethics aside - risk and consequences of getting caught.

Based on DOJ fines cheating is required!

BUT!!

Cheating is only strictly required in the trio when everyone is doing the same thing (olympic 100m) vs. different things (trading).

(In the olympics the prize is honour, achievement, etc. so most people wont cheat for that reason.)

lizzas··on Palm's CEO emails Steve Jobs (2007)
It is strategic. You can only look at it through that lens. For an ethical measure of a company or exec: see what a company does for the greater good despite it reducing their profit.
lizzas··on Palm's CEO emails Steve Jobs (2007)
ipod / imacs were key to the turnaround, although yes iPhone was a second stage booster.
lizzas··on Palm's CEO emails Steve Jobs (2007)
These are not stream of conciouness emails. Almost certainly lawyers reviewed or drafted it, or edited it, or suggested edits or he knew how to write a good negotiation email. This ain't necessarily how he talks to his team.
lizzas··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
There be tumbleweeds, but if you automate/habitize these and don't expext too much should be OK. Even full time jobs are this hard to get RN!
lizzas··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
I guess just be upfront?

"Hey James, I see you are working at Microsoft in Azure Compute and I am interested in breaking into that too. Would it be possible to go for coffee or catch up on Zoom?"

You may have to remind them how they know you if it has been a while :).

Keep it short. Unless you know they like a long email!

lizzas··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
Check out:

- HN - who wants to be hired

- Talk to people you have worked with.

- Keep your eyes open all times. E.g. I always pop into careers of a HN post, I keep a list of companies I am curious about. I do this even though I am not looking for a job.

- Negotiate - ask a FT job if they will do PT or contract.

- Find an agency to join as a contractor
