> A pistol is the great equalizer - anyone has some chance of ending the fight decisively.

This may be true if the pistol magically appears in your hands just when you need it. In statistical practice you‘ll have to handle it safely for thousands of days till you finally might need it. Enough time to hurt yourself and your loved ones.

lixtra··on How to stay focused while working on your startup and having a 9 to 5
One thing might be: In a paid job you can focus on your job. As founder/freelancer you have to handle everything. Some people are good in diving deep but slow to context switching.

In best case they can pair with a co-founder that has a good intuition about „good enough“ and handles all the chores. But then a co-founder also adds its own set of problems.

lixtra··on What is the cost of a cashless society?
They can also be tracked by their history if you have othe data sources. Let’s say you have cell phone data of someone. You can then correlate that with place (let’s say home and work) and time of a few purchases. This then de-anonymizes the card and the other purchases, even if they had their cellphone turned of in the delicate purchases.

The reality is sometimes that regulators kick the door in for banks financially including legal stuff: Operation Choke Point [1]

The consequence of abolishing cash seems to be total financial control and that is a bit like arming the police: of course you might need military equipment for fighting a cartel.

But applying it to daily operation is very cruel to parts of society.

How do you define pi or e but as a limit? At least for practical purposes.

Once you approximate them with rationals you can also imagine adding a fraction of the second multiplicand.

This is not a docker bug, it is a kernel bug.

The pi is almost self contained. The pico is a piece of e-waste without a proper computer to program it. So start wit the pi.

Two problems stand out to me:

- I have to put centralized trust in you that you don’t take my money and run.

- Regulation risk. The SEC will happily shut you down any day. Other centralized attempts of e-currency where shut down in the past.

lixtra··on Ultorg: A user interface for relational databases [video]
I like the idea. But I‘m turned off by the fact that there is no pricing information. Just a request access action button.

Maybe it’s vapor ware. Maybe they are checking market interest. Maybe they are looking for large pilot customers. I don’t see a product for me.

The discussion here is still interesting and I‘m grateful for the mentioned alternatives.

As for my pricing limits? Probably something between 10-50 USD per user per month, where at 10 USD I would very seriously look into it and at about 50 USD, I would have to carefully run the numbers.

People also have ticks. Some drool when concentrating, some stare in a strange way. The cam on your laptop is shoved right in your face which is different from a normal larger f2f meeting. Also people don’t secretly take pictures of you in real meetings.

I always turn the cam off when I share my screen. I want people to focus on the content I’m sharing, not the pimples in my face.

CONCLUSIONS:

Among adults with a high baseline prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency, implementation of a test-and-treat approach to vitamin D replacement did not reduce risk of all-cause ARI or Covid-19.

lixtra··on Ask HN: Why should I trust password managers?
> There are ways to store data securely, one of the simplest methods is to do zero-knowledge encryption of that data by way of key-generation from a password only the user knows at the time of decryption.

This keeps your passwords save until you enter your master password. At that point you have to trust the software that was downloaded a few days ago from an appstore or a few seconds ago from the company webserver. It might have been backdoored and happily phone home your master password.

Your downloaded password manager might be a few years old and YOU decide when to upgrade.

You don’t need to be a 100% sure. Once the risk becomes small enough you can spend your time worrying about other risks.
