lisbbb··on Has the cost of building software dropped 90%?
This article was more of an advertisement for...something than any meaningful commentary.

How good are tests written by AI, really? The junk "coverage" unit tests sure, but well thought out integration tests? No way. Testing code is difficult, some AI slop isn't going to make that easier because someone has to know the code and the infrastructure it is going in to and reason about all of it.

lisbbb··on IBM to acquire Confluent
The worst ever product: IBM FileNet! What an awful product. An acquisition, btw.
lisbbb··on IBM to acquire Confluent
Haven't heard a damn thing about "RedHat" in years, though. It's dead as far as Linux distros go. I'm sure it's used in the IBM-o-sphere, but I'm just not around that at all.
lisbbb··on IBM to acquire Confluent
Those are the positives. The downside is that the sales team presents you with really lousy contract opportunities and you are pressured to accept one knowing it is a crap assignment that isn't helping your career growth. And you can be stuck on one of those for years!
lisbbb··on IBM to acquire Confluent
Yes, the bench sounds great but it is incredibly nerve-wracking and I never liked that aspect of consulting at all. Better to just go to zero pay and be a free agent and if the company finds you another gig, great, but no promises either way.
lisbbb··on Influential study on glyphosate safety retracted 25 years after publication
The same thing is going to happen with that covid "vaccine" study that claims there were no excess deaths found. Wait and see.
lisbbb··on Japanese four-cylinder engine is so reliable still in production after 25 years
My Acura V6 got recalled due to main bearings being out of spec. I still haven't taken it in for that because the damn thing runs perfect and I don't want them to mess that up. But Honda, uh, did they forget how to build engines the past few years?
lisbbb··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
Yeah, uh, all I did was buy BRK.B like a decade ago and it's up 172% or something like that.

The only way I have seen people outperform is by having insider information.

lisbbb··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
How much are the expense ratios on those etfs you chose, though? I mean, Vanguard, Fidelity, Blackrock, and others have extremely low cost funds and etfs and it has been shown year after year and decade after decade that you can't beat their average returns over the long term. Indexing works for a reason. Beating something by 1%? It's not even worth it if your costs and taxes are higher than that.
lisbbb··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
This. This all day. I used to paper trade using ThinkOrSwim and I was doubling and tripling my money effortlessly. Then I decided to move my strategy to the real deal and it didn't do very well at all. It was all bs.
lisbbb··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
In my experience, you get a few big winners, but since you have to keep placing new trades (e.g. bets) you eventually blow one and lose most of what you made. This is particularly true with options and futures trades. It's a stupid way to speculate with or without AI help doesn't matter and will never matter.
lisbbb··on BMW PHEV: Safety fuse replacement is extremely expensive
There are tons of used BMWs on the used market here in the states. They don't hold their value because everyone knows that some stupid thing is wrong with them that either can't be fixed or is so ludicrously costly to fix that it would be more than the whole entire car is worth. BMW is a shit company, doesn't matter if it is ICE or EV or whatever it is, they're intentionally made to be impossible to repair cheaply. It would be so easy to build "open" hardware and have onboard diagnostics built into the cars, but no.
lisbbb··on The differences between an IndyCar and a F1 car
I guarantee none of those "100% EV" people have experienced winter in Montana, or summer for that matter. Even the Dakotas are not EV friendly. It's more of a city thing. Go nuts in the city--I'm all for EVs in certain applications.
lisbbb··on The differences between an IndyCar and a F1 car
I followed Indycar this past season, watched nearly every race and had planned on attending a race but then didn't make the trip. I'm not sure what Indycar is trying to be, tbh. The Indy 500 is a spectacle, the rest of the season is not nearly as interesting. There's some good racing, but F1 is more technically interesting and maybe better overall. NASCAR is boring as hell, just stage-managed bullshit like pro wrestling and I have not followed it in over 20 years.
lisbbb··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Wait until you find out how many students are using performance enhancing drugs to help them study!
lisbbb··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Then they don't belong in the law field or wherever, simple as that. My son has OCD pretty bad, and I know there are roles he is unsuitable for. One of the things he does is confesses about every little thing that happens--he can't keep a secret or tell a lie. It's socially debilitating.
lisbbb··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
I wouldn't hold that against him that much--the overabundance of handicapped parking spots is reason enough to game that one. It's ridiculous. My wife could have qualified for a placard because of her cancer and she was in a wheelchair for awhile, but we didn't bother getting one.
lisbbb··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
My wife has a cousin who basically gamed the system for undergraduate and law school. She grew up white, middle class, but her dad, being of Mexican descent (US born) allowed her to play up the Hispanic angle on college applications, landing her scholarships and better admissions. Then, for law school, she claimed she had ADHD so that she could get extra time on tests. It was all a scam.
lisbbb··on After nearly 30 years, Crucial will stop selling RAM to consumers
It will all be the wrong kind/obsolete.
lisbbb··on After nearly 30 years, Crucial will stop selling RAM to consumers
Huh (Britney Spears head tilt)? Consumers have "built" PCs since the 80s. I was very upset when Apple started soldering RAM to motherboards in order to edge out the competition. Also, people modify and repair cars, I fixed my refrigerator when the water solenoid part failed. Isn't repair and upgrade a normal aspect of everyday life?

lisbbb··on Kohler Can Access Pictures from "End-to-End Encrypted" Toilet Camera
What exactly is the toilet camera for? Are they taking pictures of your daily bowel movements?
lisbbb··on Big Paychecks Can't Woo Enough Sailors for America's Commercial Fleet
I read the discussion on a military-related forum and people had very different perspectives on the actual situation. The Academy isn't the only way in and most of the jobs don't pay that good until you are way further along.

That said, I had a neighbor who had two step kids, a boy and a girl, who both went through the Merchant Marine Academy and both have very lucrative careers going. The neighbor moved away, so I can't find out how well they are doing and it was about 10 years ago now... It worked for those kids (from the middle of the US).

lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
Because senior devs always have to toe the line of every corporate fad or they are pushed out.
lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
I agree with that take--a lot of tech stuff was buoyed by investment capital and everyone thought it was great until they had to start paying full price for it. Those massive data centers full of expensive, electricity and water sucking hardware are not going to last if they have to be fully funded by customers.
lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
I can't shift to India, though, is the the thing.
lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
It's too time consuming to create--I looked into doing some kind of "new tech" podcast with a colleague and it was just too much work for very little moolah.
lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
As someone who was probably a consumer of such courses, thanks, first off. But second, what happened with me was I would be on the bench at my company and be going hard at training on various tools and technologies and then get whipsawed by them into another direction completely and never once used the thing I was learning in my actual work. So I gave up on training. I would pretend to do training, but basically just screwed around doing whatever I wanted--I learned auto painting and dent repair while on the bench, basically anything. The last few years of my career sucked anyways. So yeah, I can understand why your business has dried up--there's no point in actually learning anything ahead of actually needing to use it. There just isn't. That goes for certs, too. People are burned the hell out on tech because there is so much of it now. It used to be you could do a bunch of Java certs or whatever and have a career. Now, you have to know and be experienced with EVERYTHING and that just is not possible when every technology has 2-5 competing clones of it.

I'd sooner believe that a unicorn will fly over my house and poop out rainbow skittles on my lawn. Yeah /s for sure!

You and I both know we're probably headed for revolutionary times.

lisbbb··on It’s been a very hard year
I can't even imagine what time wasting bs the LLMs are finding with static analysis tools! It's all just a circle jerk everywhere now.
