liquidise··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
Money transfers across borders. I have friends who live internationally and crypto has become our defacto way to transfer money.

But frankly, your presentation of the question leaves me doubtful you are looking for a meaningful answer here. The reality, as others have pointed out, is that there are lots of platforms in the space offering plenty of compelling services. You personally may not desire those services, but that doesn't change their viability.

liquidise··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
> Crypto continues to help nobody and achieve nothing in the real world

Crypto posts on HN seem to be a hotbed for these sorts of hyperbolic, wholly unsubstantiated and objectively false comments. I wish i understood what the motivation was for these sorts of replies.

liquidise··on Cryptocurrency loan platform implodes in $130M hack
I agree with you. My comment is not advocating for any platform in particular, least of all Cream, i'm replying only to the notion that trustless is unnecessary.
liquidise··on Cryptocurrency loan platform implodes in $130M hack
> "when you have trustworthy institutions"

Quite. But what if you don't have access to trustworthy institutions? Or what if you need to coordinate between trustworthy institutions that either don't work together or don't share mutual trust? What if you distrust the very currency the institution does business with?

Your point is correct. If you trust the institutions all the way down, trustless is complicated and unnecessary. If you don't trust the institutions, what are your other options?

liquidise··on Debian's Which Hunt
My story would echo this same sentiment. Incidentally, running `man command` on OS X actually does not reference a '-v' option at all, instead only stating the more verbose `command which`. Both appear to work, but it further highlights your (our) discoverability issue(s).
liquidise··on Online abuse: banning anonymous social media accounts is not the answer
That's unfair. I was in charge of anti-abuse for a dating site with millions of users and my gut reaction was "just 90%?".

The problem with anti-abuse at scale isn't catching the 90-99%. It is the remaining 1%. Have 10M abuse accounts with a 99% success rate and you are left with 100k spam accounts. That, and making sure you aren't catching too many innocent customers in your efforts.

liquidise··on Physicists make most precise measurement of neutron’s lifetime
> [isolated neutrons] decay into protons. During the process, each decaying neutron emits an electron and an antineutrino.

> ...detected sparks of light each time a neutron decayed.

Detecting a spark of light would also require photon(s) to be emitted, right? Is this not called out because it is a byproduct of the decay and not part of the decay reaction itself?

liquidise··on The American Bumblebee Has Vanished from Eight States
Very helpful. I looked up the 2 species and the American Bumblebee[2] is noted as having an increasingly southern habitat, with borders denoting their former range/habitat.

liquidise··on El Salvador adopts Bitcoin as official currency, first country to do so
> that its only used for money laundering and buying drugs

I am not surprised to see hyperbole like this, but i'm disappointed that they are so routinely upvoted. I've personally used bitcoin for sending money across borders (for legitimate purposes) and never for drugs or money laundering.

Apologies for my reactivity, but i think highly of the HN community and get deeply frustrated that this sort of ignorant hyperbole is peddled and supported.

liquidise··on Zoom court hearing postponed after accused found in same location as witness
I found my way to court feeds (namely Judge Middleton's[1]) during Covid. Incidentally i'm listening to Aug 19's proceedings now. Seeing these specific clips go viral feels like a microcosm of modern consumption habits.

There is so much to learn about the legal system and, more broadly, about the nature of people in trying circumstances watching court proceedings. The pureness of exchanges and the total lack of editorial bias is refreshing and too hard to find these days.

I have a theory that if more people watched court proceedings (daily misdemeanor, not just OJ/Floyd cutups), political opinions might shift toward humanizing both the accused and the victims.

liquidise··on Show HN: I made a meme creator that makes around $4k a month
If you think someone's paying customers are "debasing themselves", it probably says more about you not being the target market than a negative critique of the customers themselves.
liquidise··on Apple agrees to settle potential class action suit by U.S. developers
> Developers can communicate directly with customers about alternative payment options. Customers have to consent and be given the right to opt-out.

This is a huge step forward (though it falls well short of the ideal case) for iOS development. Having the ability to tell customers about other, often cheaper, payment methods removes a substantial barrier for some apps that have high-priced subscriptions.

Positive as this change is, there is still a lot of ground to be won here. I'm fearful concessions like this will work as legal currency in the Epic case, instead of momentum pushing ongoing shifts in app store policy. Can someone with more legal understanding weigh in on that?

liquidise··on The Tesla Semi Is an Engineering Failure
> “Did Elon Musk do it? Did he finally create something that isn’t a worse version of what we already have?”

This statement strikes me as ignorant even if we talk exclusively about Tesla. The idea that Elon hasn’t improved on existing designs across all of his current companies (or Paypal) borders on indefensible. Reusable and landable stage 1 boosters come to mind.

liquidise··on I won over $55M in the lottery, but didn’t tell my friends or family
The friend/family perception is real and one thing, but really i think this silence creates yet more separation creating ever more loneliness.

Ultimately, my fear for lottery winners is akin to discovering cheat codes in early video games. Turning on "Infinite Money" in $GAME was great... until it quickly sucked all of the joy out of the game. The limited resource challenge disappeared. I don't know anyone who has won the lottery, but i'd be worried you risk creating that very same sentiment, except about life itself. Scary, should you not have another well-established and faithfully-held purpose.

liquidise··on US set for punishing temperatures as ‘heat dome’ to settle over country
> “Heat dome over North America, showing high temperatures predicted across the continent.”

Such is the caption to a map showing no temperatures, or even potential heat but rather a predicted delta from regional norms.

This sort of behavior was exactly why I unsubscribed from the guardian after years of support post Snowden. I have no doubt this summer has been warmer on average. Here in Denver the smoke cover from Oregon’s fires must be contributing a measurable impact itself.

That said our forecast for the coming week is highs between 85-90, which feels in line for most July’s since I’ve lived here.

liquidise··on Ethereum London Mainnet Announcement
EIP 1559 is a substantial change to the handling of gas fees on the network. In addition to making gas fees be 2 parts (base and "priority" fees), this includes a provision for "burning" the base fee, reducing the overall ETH supply. From the code itself:

  # miner only receives the priority fee; note that the base fee is not given to anyone (it is burned)
Models i have seen suggest this will not make ETH deflationary, as the expected burn rates are outpaced by expected mining rates, but the proposal does specifically make note of this[1].

liquidise··on Controlling Marantz amplifier using Arduino via “Remote” socket
It may surprise the average consumer, but one of the features found in higher-end AV equipment is not just more channels or watts, but control idempotentcy.

When doing home integrations in a past life, we would often choose high-end Denon/Marantz over similarly spec'd Onkyo/Pioneer units specifically for this reason.

Serial ports provided the ability to more robustly connect and get device feedback, which was huge. Also, discrete on/off and source selection were all but required for a fluid integration.

Imagine trying to keep a home integration system synced with the state of an AV receiver if all you have was an IR transmitter and some Source Up/Down commands. We attempted a couple of these and every time the client was so (understandably) disappointed that we started requiring pricier equipment models in order to make the system meet expectations.

liquidise··on I loved jQuery, and still do (2019)
I don’t follow. Is the implication here that users can identify an experience difference cause by a 30KB over-the-wire asset, or more, a 90KB in memory one? I know I certainly wouldn’t claim to have that ability myself even on low quality networks.

liquidise··on Software is eating the car
I’ll pile on with my own anecdote. Last winter I flew home to Maine to visit family. Rented a ‘21 Nissan Altima. It drove well until there was typical New England snow/slush mix.

While driving on a flat straight stretch of road the car suddenly... yanked itself sideways. Thank god no oncoming traffic was present and I was able to course correct safely. I immediately drove home and paid careful attention to the wheel response. It kept feeling like it wanted to yank me off the road.

Once home i broke open the manual and found 4 different “driver assist” and “driver comfort” functions. After disabling them all the terrifying behavior ceased.

I’ve lived my whole life in Maine, Rochester NY and Colorado. I’ve never felt as unsafe in a car as I did with those software features enabled in about an inch of snow.

Bonus, it also has collision detection warnings on the side of the car. It was convinced every puddle I drove through that splashed slush beside the car was an object I was about to collide with.

liquidise··on Software maker Altium rejects $3.9B takeover bid from Autodesk
The Affinity software[1] has been excellent for my usecases. Their pricing is also incredible, with Photo and Designer each running $25 right now. Last week one of our employees said during a call that Photo their best software purchase in recent years.

That being said, my Adobe experience was heavy in Photoshop. Affinity Photo is more competitive there (their content-aware fill is impressive). Designer still has some ways to go to compete with Illustrator on level ground.

liquidise··on Texas Senate Passes One of the Nation’s Strictest Voting Bills
I’m not sure. If Party A expects Party B to win by 1%, A can seek to frame B with fraud by creating 1% more vote for B, who now wins by roughly 2%, meaning the bill doesn’t apply as the margin is greater than the fraud.

I don’t disagree with your assessment but I think the result is more complex. This becomes a statistical cat and mouse game, which again is a total distraction from the actual purpose of the voting process.

liquidise··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
"Anti-social ideas" is in the eye of the beholder, given that a society is generally a diverse social landscape. I know many people who consider cryptocurrencies to be one of the biggest social boons in recent times.

A unified, international ban on something is a nearly unprecedented achievement, apart from perhaps chemical weapons, and even then i'm not sure all nations had a seat at the table.

You also referred to cyprots as "evil" earlier in this thread. What specifically about cryptocurrencies has given you this strong sentiment? (To be clear i appreciate your passion on the topic, i'm legitimately trying to understand your viewpoint, if that isn't obvious).

liquidise··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
Your comment reads as if "crypto" is synonymous with "Proof of Work cryptos". Are you suggesting a blanket ban on all cryptocurrencies regardless of their electrical efficiencies, or specifically PoW-style mining?
liquidise··on The end of the pandemic is near
Have the statistics changed for people under 10 with covid? Early on data suggested almost no hospitalizations or deaths for young people.
liquidise··on Learn CSS
It is relevant in html emails, which are basically a time machine to inline styles and table layouts if you want consistent rendering. This would make no sense to a developer unless they understood the progression to where we are today.
liquidise··on Sublime Text 4
Happy to see Sublime still enjoying major version releases; i say this as a religious Textmate 2 user. Monocultures are rarely good for innovation and these projects monetizing in a sustainable way is a tide that raises all boats.

Also, a few comments here are asking versions of "What does Sublime have that $MY_EDITOR doesn't?" For many the answer is simply "experience". The idea of swapping off of TM2 for me is daunting because of the sheer number of keyboard shortcuts i've memorized. Most i don't even know by heart but rather by hand position.

How feature-rich an editor is should be less important than how feature-complete your understanding/usage is.

liquidise··on Robinhood’s big gamble
Articles like this strike me as FUD no matter how hard i try and read them another way. "Risk" is such a wide spectrum when it comes to financial investments. Just look at the crypto crash today, and there are hundreds of billions invested there still. Robinhood giving younger people access to options is hardly a doomsday risk scenario in my mind.

Robinhood may well be responsible for a generation gaining investment literacy decade(s) before adults have in the past. Some of these young investors might be burned early, but i'd take the long view and wager that those who start learning now come out ahead in 10-20 years.

liquidise··on $365B wiped off cryptocurrency market after Tesla stops accepting Bitcoin
Quite right. The alt-coin market is notoriously volatile even by crypto market standards, and not something i follow close enough to give a strong analysis on.

Coinbase's weekly losses chart[0] captures some of what i hoped to express in my parent comment. Bitcoin is interesting because in a way, it hasn't so much lost value lately as not risen with the market the last couple of weeks.

liquidise··on $365B wiped off cryptocurrency market after Tesla stops accepting Bitcoin
My hot-take having watched the culling from an invested position follows. Disclaimer: i hold both BTC and ETH.

While the market in general is down, the major losses in this crash were Bitcoin, Doge and Shiba. Bitcoin is an obvious result given the news. Doge and Shiba have had pretty spectacular gains over the last ~30d and seeing them lose considerable value is unsurprising if you follow crypto markets much. Seemingly new money has been racing in lately (see big rises in Eth Classic and Bitcoin Cash as well), i find these dips also unsurprising given past behavior.

As a somewhat meta analysis, i feel BTC could have an interesting summer. BTC plateaued at $1.1T in market cap. Meanwhile, Ethereum has been on a steady rise from 250-500B+. Talk of "the flippening" has returned in a way i didn't anticipate, certainly not this early on.

While this news impacted the whole market (the market still follows big BTC swings to some extent), i have found my personal sentiment shifting to be increasingly bearish on BTC and bullish on ETH.
